    Intermittent Problems
Intermittent s ystem hang problems c an be c aus ed by a
variety of reasons that have nothing to do with a hardware
defect, such as: cosmic radiation, electrostatic discharge, or
software errors. FRU replac ement s hould be c onsidered
only when a rec urring problem exists.
W hen analyzing the intermittent problem, do the f ollowing:
    1. Run the diagnostic test f or the mainboard in loop
    mode.
    2. If no error is detected, do not replac e any FRUs.
    3. If any error is detected, replace the FRU shown by
the FRU code. Rerun the test to verif y that no more
    errors exist.
    Undetermined Problems
You are here bec aus e the diagnostic tests did not identif y
which adapter or devic e f ailed, installed devic es are
inc orrect, a short c ircuit is suspected, or the s ystem is
inoperative. Follow thes e proc edures to is olate the f ailing
FRU (do not isolate nondefective FRUs).
Verif y that all attac hed devic es are supported by the
    W orkPad z50.
Verif y that the power supply being us ed at the time of the
failure is operating c orrectly. (See “Power Sys tems
    Checkout” on page 9.)
    1. Enter suspend mode.
    2. Visually check them f or damage. If any problems are
    found, replac e the FRU.
    3. Remove or disc onnec t all of the f ollowing devic es:
    a. Non-IBM devic es
    b. Devic es attac hed to the cradle
    c. External devices
    d. Battery pack
    e. DRAM
    f. PC Cards
    g. Compact Flash Cards
    4. Turn on the W orkPad z50.
    5. Determine if the problem has changed.
    6. If the problem does not reoccur, reconnect the
removed devic es one at a time until you find the
    failing FRU.
    7. If the problem remains, replace the f ollowing FRUs
one at a time. Do not replac e a nondef ec tive FRU.

    Removing and Replacing Defective FRUs
This section provides inf ormation on removing and replacing
    FRUs.
    ·
Do not damage any part. Only certified and trained
pers onnel should s ervic e the W orkPad z50 Mobile
    Companion.
    ·
The arrows in the “Removals and Replac ements”
section show the direction of movement to remove a
FRU, or to turn a screw to release the FRU. The
arrows are marked in numeric order, in square
callouts, to show the c orrect s equenc e of removal.
    ·
When other FRUs must be removed before the failing
FRU is removed, they are listed at the top of the
    page.
    ·
To replac e a FRU, revers e the removal proc edure
and f ollow any notes that pertain to replac ement.
    ·
W hen replac ing a FRU, us e the c orrect screw size as
    shown in the proc edures.
Safety Notice 1: Translation on page viii
Bef ore the W orkPad z50 is powered-on after FRU
replacement, make sure all screws, springs, or other
small parts are in plac e and are not left loos e inside the
    W orkPad z50. Verif y this by shaking the W orkPad z50
and listening f or rattling s ounds. Metallic parts or metal
flakes c an c aus e electric al shorts.
Safety Notice 2: Translation on page ix
The battery pack c ontains small amounts of harmful
substances. Do not disassemble it, throw it into fire or
water, or short-circuit it. Dispose of the battery pack or
backup battery as required by local ordinances or
regulations. Us e only the battery in the appropriate parts
listing when replac ing the battery pac k. Us e of an
inc orrect battery c an res ult in ignition or explos ion of the
    battery.
Safety Notice 6: Translation on page xi
Before removing any FRU, place the W orkPad z50 into
suspend mode, unplug all power c ords from electric al
outlets, then disconnect any interconnecting cables and
remove the battery pac k and bac kup batteries.
    CAUTION:
If all power sources are removed from the WorkPad z50,
all data and applications will be lost. If the problem is
considered a software problem stored on DRAM
memory, approach the problem from that standpoint
    before removing all power sources.
Attention: The mainboard is s ensitive to, and c an be
    damaged by, electrostatic discharge.

W orkPad z50 Mobile Companion 31 An electrostatic discharge (ESD) strap (P/N 6405959) must
be us ed to establish pers onal grounding.

They do not easily c ome loos e, even with shoc k or
    vibration.
    But:
    ·
They need additional forc e to tighten.
    ·
They s hould be us ed only onc e.
Do the f ollowing when you s ervic e this mac hine:
