    Safety Information
The following s ection c ontains the s af ety information that
you need to be f amiliar with bef ore s ervicing an IBM mobile
    computer.
    General Safety
Follow these rules to ensure general safety:
    ·
Obs erve good hous ekeeping in the area of the
machines during and after maintenanc e.
    ·
W hen lifting any heavy objec t:
    1. Ensure you c an stand safely without slipping.
    2. Distribute the weight of the object equally
    between your f eet.
    3. Use a slow lifting f orc e. Never move suddenly or
twist when you attempt to lift.
    4. Lift by standing or by pushing up with your leg
muscles; this action removes the strain from the
    muscles in your back.
Do not attempt to lift any
objects that weigh more than 16 kg (35 lb) or
objects that you think are too heavy for you.
    ·
Do not perform any action that causes hazards to the
customer, or that makes the equipment uns af e.
    ·
Bef ore you start the mac hine, ensure that other
servic e repres entatives and the c ustomers pers onnel
are not in a hazardous position.
    ·
Plac e removed c overs and other parts in a s af e
plac e, away from all pers onnel, while you are
    servicing the machine.
    ·
Keep your tool c as e away from walk areas s o that
other people will not trip over it.
    ·
Do not wear loos e clothing that c an be trapped in the
moving parts of a machine. Ens ure that your s leeves
are f astened or rolled up above your elbows . If your
    hair is long, fasten it.
    ·
Ins ert the ends of your necktie or scarf inside c lothing
or f asten it with a nonc onductive clip, approximately 8
centimeters (3 inc hes) from the end.
    ·
Do not wear jewelry, chains, metal-frame eyeglass es,
or metal fasteners f or your clothing.
Attention: Metal objec ts are good elec tric al
    conductors.
    ·
W ear s af ety glass es when you are: hammering,
drilling, s oldering, cutting wire, attaching springs,
using s olvents, or working in any other c onditions that
might be hazardous to your eyes.
    ·
After s ervic e, reinstall all s af ety shields, guards,
labels, and ground wires . Replac e any s af ety devic e
that is worn or def ective.
    ·
Reinstall all covers correctly bef ore returning the
    machine to the customer.

    Electrical Safety
Obs erve the f ollowing rules when working on electric al
    equipment.
    Important
Use only approved tools and test equipment. Some hand
tools have handles c overed with a s oft material that does
not insulate you when working with live electrical currents.
Many customers have, near their equipment, rubber floor
mats that c ontain small c onductive fibers to decreas e
electrostatic discharges . Do not us e this type of mat to
protect yours elf from electric al shoc k.
    ·
Find the room emergency power-off (EPO) switch,
disc onnecting s witc h, or electric al outlet. If an
electric al accident occ urs, you c an then operate the
switch or unplug the power cord quickly.
    ·
Do not work alone under hazardous c onditions or
near equipment that has hazardous voltages.
    Disconnect all power bef ore:
    - Perf orming a mec hanic al inspection
    - W orking near power supplies
    - Removing or installing main units
    ·
Before you start to work on the machine, unplug the
power cord. If you cannot unplug it, ask the customer
to power-off the wall box that supplies power to the
machine and to lock the wall box in the off position.
    ·
If you need to work on a machine that has
expos edelectric al circuits, obs erve the f ollowing prec autions:
    - Ensure that another pers on, f amiliar with the
    power-off controls, is near you.
Attention: Another person must be there to
switch off the power, if necessary.
    - Use only one hand when working with
powered-on elec tric al equipment; keep the
other hand in your pocket or behind your bac k.
Attention: There must be a c omplete circ uit
to c aus e elec tric al shoc k. By obs erving the
above rule, you may prevent a current from
    passing through your body.
    - W hen using testers, s et the c ontrols c orrectly
and us e the approved probe leads and
    accessories for that tester.
    - Stand on suitable rubber mats (obtained
locally, if necessary) to insulate you from
grounds such as metal floor strips and
    machine frames.
Obs erve the spec ial s af ety prec autions when you
work with very high voltages; thes e instructions are in
the s af ety s ections of maintenanc e inf ormation. Us e
extreme c are when meas uring high voltages.

xiv IBM W orkPad z50, Mobile Companion xiv·
Regularly inspect and maintain your electrical hand
tools for s af e operational c ondition.
    ·
Do not us e worn or broken tools and testers.
    ·

Never assume that power has been disc onnec ted
from a circuit. First, check that it has been powered-
    off.
    ·
Always look carefully for possible hazards in your
work area. Examples of thes e hazards are moist
floors, nongrounded power extension c ables, power
surges, and missing s af ety grounds.
    ·
Do not touch live electric al circ uits with the ref lective
surfac e of a plastic dental mirror. The surf ac e is
conductive; such touching c an c aus e pers onal injury
    and machine damage.
    ·
Do not service the following parts
with the power onwhen they are removed from their normal operating
    places in a machine:
    - Power supply units
    - Pumps
    - Blowers and fans
    - Motor generators
and similar units. (This practic e ensures c orrec t
    grounding of the units.)
    ·
If an elec tric al accident occ urs:
    - Use caution; do not become a victim
    yourself.
    - Switch off power.
    - Send another person to get medical aid
while first aid is being administered.
    Safety Inspection Guide
The intent of this inspection guide is to assist you in
identif ying potentially uns af e c onditions on thes e products.
Each mac hine, as it was des igned and built, had required
saf ety items installed to protec t us ers and s ervic e pers onnel
from injury. This guide addresses only those items.
However, good judgment should be us ed to identif y potential
saf ety hazards due to attac hment of non-IBM f eatures or
options not c overed by this inspection guide.
If any uns af e c onditions are pres ent, you must determine
how s erious the apparent hazard c ould be and whether you
can c ontinue without first c orrecting the problem.
Consider thes e c onditions and the s af ety hazards they
    pres ent:
    ·
Electrical hazards, especially primary power (primary
voltage on the frame c an c aus e s erious or f atal
    electric al shoc k)
    ·
Explosive hazards, such as a damaged CRT face or
    bulging c apacitor
    ·
Mechanical hazards, such as loose or missing
    hardware

© Copyright IBM Corp. 1998 xv The guide c onsists of a s eries of steps pres ented in a
checklist. Begin the checks with the power off, and the
    power cord disconnected.
    Checklist:
    1. Check exterior c overs for damage (loos e, broken, or
    s h arp edg es ).
    2. P ower - of f th e c om p ut er . Disconnect the power
    cord.
    3. Check the power cord f or:
    a. A third-wire ground c onnec tor in good
condition. Us e a meter to measure third-wire
ground c ontinuity f or 0.1 ohm or less between
the external ground pin and frame ground.
    b. The power c ord should be the appropriate type
as s pecified in the parts listings.
    c. Insulation must not be frayed or worn.
    4. Remove the c over.
    5. Check f or any obvious non-IBM alterations. Us e
good judgment as to the s af ety of any non-IBM
    alterations.
    6. Check inside the unit for any obvious uns af e
conditions, such as metal filings, c ontamination, water
or other liquids, or signs of fire or smoke damage.
    7. Check for worn, frayed, or pinched cables.
    8. Check that the power-supply cover fasteners (screws
or rivets) have not been removed or tampered with.

    Handling Electrostatic
    Discharge-Sensitive Devices
Any c omputer part c ontaining transistors or integrated
circuits (Ics) should be c onsidered s ensitive to electrostatic
discharge (ESD). ESD damage can occur when there is a
differenc e in charge between objects. Protect against ESD
damage by equalizing the charge so that the machine, the
part, the work mat, and the pers on handling the part are all
at the s ame c harge.
    Notes
    1. Use product-spec ific ESD proc edures when they
exc eed the requirements noted here.
    2. Make sure that the ESD protective devices you
use have been certified (ISO 9000) as fully
    ef f ec ti ve.
W hen handling ESD-s ensitive parts:
    ·
Keep the parts in protective packages until they are
    ins erted into the product.
    ·
      Avoid contact with other people.
    ·
W ear a grounded wrist strap against your skin to
eliminate static on your body. Approved static straps
protect the us er from high-operating voltages (110V).
    ·
Prevent the part from touching your clothing. Mos t
clothing is insulative and retains a charge even when
you are wearing a wrist strap.
    ·
Use the blac k side of a grounded work mat to provide
a static-free work surf ac e. The mat is es pecially
us eful when handling ESD-s ensitive devic es. Select
a grounding s ys tem, s uch as thos e listed below, to
provide protection that meets the specific s ervic e
    requirement.
    Note
T he us e of a grounding system is desirable but not required
to pr ot ec t ag ains t ESD dam ag e.
    - Attach the ESD ground clip to any frame
ground, ground braid, or green-wire ground.
    - Use an ESD c ommon ground or ref erenc e
point when working on a double-insulated or
    battery-operated s ystem. You c an us e c oax or
connec tor-outside shells on thes e s ystems.
    - Use the round ground-prong of the AC plug on
    AC-operated computers.
    Grounding Requirements
Electric al grounding of the c omputer is required for operator
saf ety and c orrect s ystem function. Proper grounding of the
electric al outlet c an be verified by a c ertified electrician.

    Read This First
Bef ore you go to the c heckout guide, be s ure to read this
    section.
    Important
    ·
Only certified trained personnel should service
    the computer.
    ·
Read FRU s ervic e proc edures bef ore replacing
    any FRUs.
    ·
Replace FRUs only for the correct model.
When you replace the FRU, make sure the model
of the machine and FRU part number are c orrec t
by referring to the parts list.
    ·
FRUs should not be replaced because of a
    single, unreproducible failure. Single failures
can occur from a variety of reas ons that have
nothing to do with a hardware problem, such as
cos mic radiation, elec trostatic discharge, or
software errors. FRU replac ement s hould be
considered only when a recurring problem exists.
If this is sus pected, clear the log error and run the
test again. Do not replac e any FRUs if log errors
    do not appear.
    ·
Be careful not to replace a nondefectiv e FRU.

    Screw Tightening Information
Loos e screws c an c aus e reliability problems. The IBM
W orkPad z50 address es this problem with nylon c oated
    screws. Tighten screws as follows:
    Plastic to Plastic
Turn an additional 90 degrees af ter the screw head
touches the surface of the plastic part.
    90 Degrees More
    Plastic
    Logic card to Plastic
Turn an additional 180 degrees after the screw head
    t ouc h es t h e s urf ac e of t h e l og ic c ard .
    180 Degrees More
    Plastic Logic Card
    Torque Driv er
If you have a torque driver, ref er to the “T orque”
    instruction with eac h step.
Cradle Problems: If you suspec t a problem with the
cradle, s ee “Cradle Checkout” on page 15.
How to Diagnose Multiple FRUs: W hen the
adapter or the devic e has more than one FRU, the error
code could be caused by any of them. Before replacing
multiple FRUs, try removing or exc hanging each FRU, one
by one in the designated s equenc e, to s ee if the s ymptoms
    change.

    							W orkPad z50 Mobile Companion 3 Attention
Pushing the W orkPad z50’s Power button will power on
(or res ume) the s ystem, or put the s ystem in sus pend
mode: there is no power-off state.
If the AC Adapter, battery pack, and backup battery are
removed, the s ystem is res et and all the stored data is
lost. There is no lithium battery to retain memory while
thes e power s ourc es are removed.
What to Do First: The s ervic e pers onnel must fill in the
following information in the parts exchange form or parts
return form that is attached to the returned FRU:
__ 1 Name and phone number of service personnel
    __ 2 Date of service
__ 3 Date when the part failed
    __ 4 Date of purchase
__ 5 Failure symptoms, error codes appearing on the monitor, and
    beep symptoms
__ 6 Procedure index and page number in which the failing FRU
    was detected
__ 7 Failing FRU name and part number
__ 8 Machine type, model number, and serial number
__ 9 Customers name and address
Bef ore c hec king problems with the c omputer, determine
whether the damage is covered under the warranty by
    referring to the following:
During the warranty period, the customer may be
responsible for repair costs if the computer damage was
caus ed by mis us e, acc ident, modific ation, uns uitable
phys ic al or operating environment, or improper maintenanc e
by the customer. The following list provides s ome c ommon
