W orkPad z50 Mobile Companion 17 Installing the ROM/DRAM Card This section describes how to install the ROM card or the optional DRAM c ard to the W orkPad z50. Note: W hen you remove the ROM/DRAM card, you will lose all stored data. Before you remove the ROM/DRAM card, be sure to bac k up all data and applic ations in the bas e memory. Caution: Bef ore removing or ins erting the RO M/DRAM c ard, all power s ourc es (AC power, the main battery pack, and the backup batteries) must be removed. Follow thes e instructions when ins erting the RO M/DRAM card: 1. Plac e the W orkPad z50 into suspend mode and disconnect AC power. 2. Turn the W orkPad z50 upside down. 3. Remove the main battery and remove the bac kup batteries. 4. Unscrew the s ingle (c aptive) screw that s ecures the ROM/DRAM card compartment cover to the chassis. Remove the c over. Unscrew the screw that secures the ROM/DRAM card cover to the chassis and remove the ROM/DRAM card cover. ROM cardDRAM card 5. Loc ate the RO M/DRAM c ard Slot. 6. Find the notch on the side of the c ard. 20

W ith the notched end of the c ard toward the right side of the s ocket, ins ert the c ard at an angle of approximately 20 degrees into the s oc ket; press it in firmly as s hown (1). G ently pivot the c ard until it snaps into plac e (2). Attention To avoid damaging the RO M/DRAM c ard, do not touc h its contact edge. 8. Ensure that the ROM/DRAM card is securely inserted in the slot. 9. Replac e the RO M/DRAM c ard c over over the memory slot, aligning the bac k side of the c over first; then tighten the screw. 10. Attach the main battery and insert the backup batteries. 11. Turn the W orkPad z50 top side up. Connec t the AC Adapter and c ables; then turn on the W orkPad z50. Attention Handling a Screwdriver · Use a screwdriver that fits the screw. · Use the screwdriver perpendic ular to the head of the screw. Handle the screwdriver properly; otherwis e, you might damage the screw. Removing the ROM/DRAM Card Note: Before removing the ROM/DRAM card, back up all data and applic ations in the bas e memory. All data and installed applications will be lost by removing the ROM/DRAM c ard. The ROM needs to be reinstalled bef ore starting the PO ST or running W indows CE. Caution: Before removing the ROM/DRAM card, all power sources (AC power, the main battery pack, and the backup batteries) must be removed. Follow thes e instructions when removing the RO M/DRAM card: 1. Turn off the W orkPad z50. 2. Disconnect AC power. 3. Turn the W orkPad z50 upside down. 4. Remove the main battery and remove the bac kup batteries.

Using your fingers or a small screwdriver, press out the two latc hes on the sides of the c ard away from the slots. T he RO M/DRA M c ard s hould p op out s lightl y . Removing the DRAM and ROM Cards Pull the tabs in the direction of the arrows to release the cards. DRAM Card ROM Card 7. Gently pull out the c ard. 8. Replac e the RO M/DRAM c ard c over over the memory slot, aligning the bac k side of the c over first; then tighten the screw. 9. Attach the main battery and insert the backup batteries. 10. Turn the W orkPad z50 top side up. Connec t the AC Adapter and c ables; then turn on the W orkPad z50. Brightness/Contrast Buttons Checkout If you suspec t a problem with the brightness/c ontrast buttons do the f ollowing actions one at a time to c orrec t the problem. Do not replace a nondefective FRU: · Res eat the inverter c ables and c onnectors to the mainboard and the LCD panel. · Replace the inverter card · Replace the mainboard
20 IBM W orkPad z50, Mobile Companion 20 Power Management Features The power management features are des igned to s ave as much electricity as possible by putting c omponents into a low-power consumption mode as often as possible. This low-power mode is referred to as “suspend” mode. Full Power Mode The W orkPad z50 operates in Full power mode when power management is dis abled and the AC Adapter is c onnec ted. Suspend Mode In suspend mode, the s ystem is powered off exc ept f or the system DRAM. The W orkPad z50 enters suspend mode when the s ystem remains idle f or a specified amount of time or under one of the following conditions: · The Power button is press ed. · The LCD panel is clos ed. · A W indows CE power management time-out occurs. · The W indows CE Sus pend ic on is clicked. · The battery releas e loc k is releas ed. · The remaining battery c apac ity of the battery pac k is very low. · A notification event set in the “Alarms” window of the World Clock applic ation in the Control Panel occ urs. Attention The s ystem will not enter suspend mode after an idle time-out under the following conditions: The s erial port is c onnected to another s ystem running W indows CE s ervic es . The W orkPad z50 is c onnected to a network through the PCMCIA LAN card. The system will resume to full power mode under one of the following conditions: · The Power button is press ed while in suspend mode. · An application launching key is pressed. · The LCD panel is opened. · An internal fax/modem ring-in occurs. · The Microphone button is pus hed. · The Notific ation button is pushed when the notification LED blinks. · A built-in data/fax modem ring occurs. · The s erial port is c onnected to another s ystem f or trans mitting and rec eiving data.

Run the advanced diagnostic test. If an error occurs, replace the parts shown by the FRU code.

Check that the external monitor is enabled in the Rapid Access utility. 2. Check that the external monitor can display at 640x480 and 800x600, @ 75Hz refresh rate. 3. Connect the external monitor to another PC. If the monitor works fine, replace the mainboard. If not, replace the external monitor. Serial port device problems.1. Run serial port wrap test. 2.
