31 OPERATION Operating on Hills Read the \bafety I\fst\aructio\fs Driving on Slopes i\f the Safety Instructions. IMPORTANT INFORMATION Control levers ret\gurn to neutral when \greleased\b This may cause the m\gower to suddenly st\gop\b WARNING! Do not drive up or \gdown hills with slo\gpes greater than 10 degr\gees\b Do not drive across slopes\b • The slowest speed \apossible should be \aused before starti\fg up or dow\f hill\as. • Avoid stoppi\fg or ch\aa\fgi\fg speed o\f hill\as. • If stoppi\fg is abso\alutely \fecessary, pull drive levers i\fto the \feut\aral positio\f a\fd push\a to the outside of the u\fit \aa\fd e\fgage the parki\f\ag brake. • To restart moveme\ft, release the parki\fg b\arake. • Pull the co\ftrol levers back to t\ahe ce\fter of the mower a\fd press forward to regai\f forward motio\f. • Make all tur\fs slowly. 8058-182Release the parking brake to restart movement 8058-226Place controls in neutral position
32 OPERATION Stopping the Engine For all models, mov\ae the throttle to the mi\fimu\am positio\f (tortoise symbol). If \athe e\fgi\fe has bee\f \a worked hard, allow it to idle\a a mi\fute to attai\f a \a \formal operati\fg temper\aature before stoppi\fg. To preve\ft fouli\fg the sp\aark plugs, avoid idl\ai\fg the e\fgi\fe for lo\fger pe\ariods. 1. Dise\fgage the mower \adeck by depressi\fg the blade switch. 8058-214Disengage the mower deck and move throttle to minimum 2. Raise the mower dec\ak by pressi\fg the foot ped\aal forward to the tra\fsport positio\f. 3. Whe\f the machi\fe is \asta\fdi\fg still, activ\aate the parki\fg brake by pul\ali\fg the lever upwar\ad. 4. Tur\f the ig\fitio\f key t\ao the stop positio\a\f. 5. Move the steeri\fg c\ao\ftrols outward. 6. Remove ig\fitio\f key\a. To preve\ft u\fauthorized us\ae, always remove the key whe\f \aleavi\fg the mower. 8058-223Raise deck to transport position 8058-266Place controls in neutral position to stop IMPORTANT INFORMATION Leaving the ignition\g switch in any othe\gr position than OFF w\gill cause the \fatter\gy to \fe discharged\b
33 OPERATION 8011-603bMowing pattern Mowing Tips • Observe a\fd flag rocks a\fd other fixed\a objects to avoid collisio\fs. • Begi\f with a high c\autti\fg height a\fd reduce it u\ftil the desired mowi\fg result is attai\fed. T\ahe average law\f should b\ae cut to 2½" (64 mm\a) duri\fg the cool seas\ao\f a\fd over 3" (76 m\am) duri\fg the hot mo\fth\as. For healthier a\fd\a better looki\fg law\fs, mow o\afte\f after moderate \agrowth. • For best cutti\fg pe\arforma\fce, grass over 6"\a (15 cm) i\f height shoul\ad be mowed twice. \aMake the first cut relatively high; the\a seco\fd to the desi\ared height. • The mowi\fg result will be best \awith a high e\fgi\fe speed (the blades r\aotate rapidly) a\fd l\aow speed (the rider moves s\alowly). If the gras\as is \fot too lo\fg a\fd de\fse, t\ahe drivi\fg speed ca\a\f be i\fcreased without \fegati\avely affecti\fg the mowi\fg \a result. • The fi\fest law\fs are obtai\fed by mowi\fg\a ofte\f. The law\f becomes mo\are eve\f a\fd the grass\a clippi\fgs more eve\fly distribute\ad over the mow\f area. The total time \atake\f is \fot i\fcreased as a higher operati\fg sp\aeed ca\f be used with\aout poor mowi\fg results. • Avoid mowi\fg wet law\a\fs. The mowi\fg result is poorer because the whee\als si\fk i\fto the so\aft law\f, clumps build, a\fd the\a grass clippi\fgs fas\ate\f u\fder the cowli\fg. • Hose the mower dec\ak u\fderside with wat\aer after each use. Whe\f clea\fi\a\fg, the mower deck \ashall be raised i\fto the \atra\fsport positio\f. Make sur\ae the mower is coole\ad a\fd the e\fgi\fe is \aoff. • Use compressed air to clea\f t\aop surface of the deck. Avoid floodi\fg water \ao\f top surface, e\fgi\fe a\fd electrical compo\a\fe\fts. • Whe\f the mulchi\fg ki\at is used, it is im\aporta\ft that the mowi\fg i\fterval \ais freque\ft a\fd that the d\aeck is clea\fed more ofte\f. WARNING! Clear the lawn of s\gtones and other o\fjects that can \fe \gthrown out \fy the \flades\b WARNING! Never drive the rid\ger on terrain that \g slopes more than 10\g degrees\b Mow slopes up and down,\g never side to sid\ge\b Avoid sudden directi\gonal changes\b

Release lever, e\fgaged Right side, ZT-3400 linkage Whe\f pushi\fg or pull\ai\fg the mower, e\fgage the bypass li\fkages with\a the hydro release levers. The \a levers are located o\f each si\ade of the rear of the u\fit below the e\fgi\fe pl\aate. Raise the deck to t\ahe highest (tra\fspo\art) positio\f. Pull the bypass li\fk\aages up a\fd out of th\ae keyhole slots. Release the \alever with the head\a outside the bracket a\fd held i\ft\ao the bypass setti\f\ag. To ree\fgage the hydro to drive, reverse the above procedure. WARNING! No adjustments or m\gaintenance should \fe carried out unles\gs: • the engine stopped • the ignition key re\gmoved • the parking \frake ac\gtivated WARNING!
