www.gateway.com 43 Converting from notebook to tablet mode You can convert the display from notebook to tablet mode with the convertible notebook turned on or off. To convert the display from notebook mode to tablet mode: 1Open the LCD panel to the normal viewing position. 2Locate the rotation direction arrow on the LCD panel hinge. 3Rotate the LCD panel in the direction of the rotational arrow until the back of the panel is facing you. The panel soft-locks into the final position. 4Close the LCD panel onto the keyboard. You hear a click when the LCD panel latch locks. Important Although you can use the digital pen to write on the screen when the convertible notebook is in notebook mode, for best results and maximum stability, only write on the screen while the convertible notebook is in tablet mode. Changing display orientation You can change the display orientation from the default, landscape (horizontal), to portrait (vertical) or secondary landscape (180 degrees from the default) using the Screen Rotation button. To change display orientation: •Press the Screen Rotation button to step through display orientations. For more information, see “Using the tablet control buttons” on page 30. -OR- Press the Mobility Center button . The Windows Mobility Center window opens. Click or tap Rotate screen. Adjusting brightness To adjust screen brightness: •Use the increase brightness and decrease brightness keys on the keyboard. For more information, see “System key combinations” on page 27. -OR- Press the Mobility Center button . The Windows Mobility Center window opens. www.gateway.com 45 Using the digital pen Your convertible notebook’s digital pen is the only device that can write, tap, and input directly on your convertible notebook’s display. The digital pen can do everything a mouse does. Just think “tap” instead of “click”. Storing and removing the digital pen To store the digital pen in your convertible notebook: 1Locate the pen holder on the bottom of your convertible notebook. For more information, see “Bottom” on page 9. 2Slide the digital pen into the holder until the digital pen clicks into place. Caution A finger-tap or PDA stylus has no effect on your convertible notebook’s display, and ink pens and other pointed objects could damage the surface. Always use the digital pen that came with your convertible notebook. You can order extra digital pens from Gateway. CautionDo not strike the display too sharply. Although the display is durable, it can break. With a mouse:With a digital pen: Point and clickPoint and tap Double-click Double-tap Click-and-dragTap-and-drag Right-click Button-tap (press the digital pen button while tapping or hold the digital pen in place)
CHAPTER3: Setting Up and Getting Started 46 To remove the digital pen from your convertible notebook: 1Locate the pen latch on the bottom of your convertible notebook. For more information, see “Bottom” on page 9. 2Slide the pen latch until the digital pen is released from the pen holder. Pen lost alarm Your convertible notebook can sound a series of three beeps if the digital pen is not in the pen holder when you turn the convertible notebook off or place it in either Sleep or Hibernate mode. This feature is shipped from the factory turned off. To turn on the pen lost alarm: 1As soon as your convertible notebook starts and you see a startup screen, press F2. The BIOS Setup utility opens. 2Open the Advanced menu. 3Highlight Pen Lost Alarm, then select Enabled by pressing the spacebar. 4Open the Exit menu, highlight Exit Saving Changes, then press ENTER.
www.gateway.com 47 Adjusting the volume You can use the volume control to adjust the overall volume of your convertible notebook. To adjust the overall volume level using hardware controls: •If you are using external speakers, turn the knob on the front of the speakers. -OR- Use the five-way switch. For more information, see “Using the tablet control buttons” on page 30. -OR- Use the mute and volume control buttons on the keyboard. For more information, see “System key combinations” on page 27. -OR- Press the Mobility Center button . The Windows Mobility Center window opens. Slide the Volume control to the volume level you want. To adjust the volume from Windows: 1Click or tap (Volume) on the taskbar. The volume control slider opens. 2Click and drag or tap and drag the slider up to increase volume and down to decrease volume. 3To mute the volume, click or tap (Mute). The Volume Mixer dialog box opens, where you can click and drag or tap and drag sliders for individual devices. 5Click or tap X in the top-right corner of the window to close it. Turning your wireless radio on or off Your Gateway convertible notebook may have a factory-installed wireless radio.Tip Adjust the Windows Sounds slider to change system sounds volume independently of general volume (such as the volume used for music and game sounds). War ningIn environments where the risk of interference to other devices or services is harmful or perceived as harmful, the option to use a wireless device may be restricted or eliminated. Airports, hospitals, and oxygen or flammable gas laden atmospheres are limited examples where use of wireless devices may be restricted or eliminated. When in environments where you are uncertain of the sanction to use wireless devices, ask the applicable authority for authorization prior to using or turning on the wireless device.
www.gateway.com 49 IEEE 802.11 wireless network radio Your convertible notebook may have an IEEE 802.11 radio for communicating with other computers on a wireless Ethernet network. To turn the wireless IEEE 802.11 radio on or off: •Press FN + F2. The wireless status indicator turns on or off. For the location of the wireless status indicator, see “Using the status indicators” on page 23. -OR- Press the Mobility Center button . The Windows Mobility Center window opens. Click or tap Turn wireless on or Turn wireless off. Bluetooth radio Your convertible notebook may have a Bluetooth radio for communicating with another Bluetooth device, such as a printer, scanner, camera, MP3 player, headphone, keyboard, or mouse. To turn the Bluetooth radio on or off: •Press FN + F6. War ning Radio frequency wireless communication can interfere with equipment on commercial aircraft. Current aviation regulations require wireless devices to be turned off while traveling in an airplane. IEEE 802.11 communication devices are examples of devices that provide wireless communication. CHAPTER4: Using Drives and Accessories 52 Changing modules Your convertible notebook’s modular bay supports different bay modules, such as a CD, combination DVD/CD-RW, or multi-format DVD±RW drive, or a multibay battery. To change bay modules: 1If you are removing a drive, make sure that there is no disc in it. 2Make sure that the convertible notebook is not in Sleep or Hibernate mode. 3Make sure that the LCD panel is in notebook mode, then close the LCD panel. For more information, see “Converting from notebook to tablet mode” on page 43. 4Disconnect your convertible notebook from the optional port replicator. 5Turn your convertible notebook over so the bottom is facing up. 6Remove the modular bay lock screw (if one is present), then slide and hold the module bay latch. The module may move out slightly.Caution If you are replacing a multibay battery, turn off the convertible notebook if it does not have a charged main battery and is not directly connected to AC power.
