www.gateway.com 35 Using the optional fingerprint reader Your notebook may include a fingerprint reader that provides enhanced security and convenience. The fingerprint reader is located below the keyboard. Features include: •Secure logon to Windows and fast user switching between user accounts •Password bank feature which records and replays passwords used in Windows and Web-based applications •A safe or folder for storing encrypted files that only a user with a matching fingerprint can access •Boot level security that requires a fingerprint authentication before the system will boot to Windows •Scrolling so you can use the fingerprint reader in place of the touchpad Running the TouchStrip Tutorial Before using the fingerprint reader the first time, you should run the TouchStrip Tutorial which teaches you the correct method to use the fingerprint reader. To run the TouchStrip Tutorial: 1Click or tap (Start), All Programs, Protector Suite QL, then click or tap Fingerprint Tutorial. 2Click or tap Next to proceed through the tutorial.

CHAPTER3: Setting Up and Getting Started 36 Enrolling your fingerprints Before you can use the features of the fingerprint reader, you must enroll your fingerprints so your convertible notebook can identify you. To enroll your fingerprints: 1Click or tap (Start), All Programs, Protector Suite QL, then click or tap User Enrollment. The Welcome screen opens. 2Click or tap Next. The Finish screen opens. 3Select one of the following options, then click or tap Next. •Enrollment to the biometric device—Select this option to save your fingerprint to memory in the fingerprint reader. Use this option to prevent unauthorized use of your notebook even if the hard drive has been removed. •Enrollment to the hard disk—Select this option to save your fingerprint to the hard drive. If you plan to enroll more than 21 fingerprints, you must select this option. The User Enrollment wizard opens.

www.gateway.com 37 4If you want to run the TouchStrip Tutorial, leave the Run interactive tutorial check box selected, then click or tap Next. The TouchStrip Tutorial runs. After you have completed the tutorial, the Enrollment screen appears. -OR- If you do not want to run the To uc hS tr i p Tut o r i a l, click or tap to uncheck the Run interactive tutorial check box, then click or tap Next. The Enrollment screen appears. 5Click or tap the button above the finger you are enrolling. A new box appears with three empty circles in it.

A sample is created and is indicated by a fingerprint icon in one of the circles. 7Repeat Step 6 two more times, then click or tap Next. The Advanced Security screen appears. 8Typ e a pa ssword i n the Backup password box, type the same password in the Retype password box, then click or tap Next. 9Click or tap Finish. Using the Fingerprint Control Center The Fingerprint Control Center lets the administrator of the notebook control how the fingerprint reader is used. You can: •Add new fingerprints to the database •Edit or delete fingerprints from the database •Modify how fingerprints are used for logging onto the notebook. •Modify how the fingerprint reader is used for scrolling

www.gateway.com 39 To use the Fingerprint Control Center: 1Click or tap (Start), All Programs, Protector Suite QL, then click or tap Control Center. The Fingerprint Control Center opens. 2If you are logged into the notebook with administrator privileges, click or tap Elevate administrative privileges for user so you can make changes to the settings. 3Click or tap the yellow arrow in front of an option, then click or tap the option or setting you want to change. Using the fingerprint reader features For more information about the fingerprint reader and how to use its features, click or tap (Start), All Programs, Protector Suite QL, then click or tap Help.

CHAPTER3: Setting Up and Getting Started 40 Using the EZ Pad touchpad The EZ Pad™ consists of a touchpad, two buttons, and a scroll zone. When you move your finger on the touchpad, the pointer (arrow) on the screen moves in the same direction. You can use the scroll zone to scroll through documents. www.gateway.com 41 You can use the EZ-Pad left and right buttons below the touchpad to select objects. Tip You can attach a mouse to the convertible notebook or optional port replicator using a USB port. You do not need to shut down the convertible notebook to connect a USB mouse. TipFor instructions on how to adjust the double-click speed, pointer speed, right-hand or left-hand configuration, and other touchpad settings, see “Changing the mouse, touchpad, or pointing device settings” in your online User Guide. TipYou may have received your convertible notebook with the EZ Pad touchpad set to only accept clicking by using the touchpad buttons. You can change this feature to allow tapping on the touchpad to simulate clicking the left button. For more information, see “Changing the mouse, touchpad, or pointing device settings” in your online User Guide. To...Do this... If you run out of space and need to move the pointer farther, lift your finger, move it to the middle of the touchpad, then continue moving your finger. Select an object on the screen.Position the pointer over the object. Quickly press and release the left button once. This action is called clicking. CHAPTER3: Setting Up and Getting Started 42 Using the display Your convertible notebook’s screen combines the eye-soothing readability of a liquid-crystal display with the responsiveness of a pen controller. The screen provides a hard, smooth writing surface, minimizes glare, and increases readability. •Unlike other touchscreens and PDAs, your convertible notebook’s display responds only to your convertible notebook’s digital pen. Your convertible notebook will not respond to a PDA stylus or the touch of a fingertip. •Steady your hand on the display surface while writing. The pressure of your hand or fingers will not affect any open programs. •Switching from AC to battery power dims the display slightly to save battery power. Access a shortcut menu or find more information about an object on the screen.Position the pointer over the object. Quickly press and release the right button once. This action is called right-clicking. Move an object on the screen.Position the pointer over the object.
