www.gateway.com 113 13Remove the four screws that secure the hard drive to the hard drive bracket. 14Remove the bracket from the old drive. 15Insert the new drive into the bracket, label side up, so the screw holes line up. 16Replace the four screws that secure the bracket to the drive. 17Slide the new hard drive into your convertible notebook, then replace the screw that secures the hard drive to your convertible notebook. 18Replace the hard drive bay cover, then tighten the cover screws. 19Insert the main and optional multibay batteries, then turn your convertible notebook over. 20Connect to the optional port replicator. -OR- Connect the power adapter, modem cable, and network cable. 21Turn on your convertible notebook, open the DVD drive, insert the Windows DVD, close the DVD drive, then restart your convertible notebook. 22When the prompt “Press any key to boot from CD or DVD” appears, press any key on your keyboard and follow the on-screen instructions. As part of the process you may be prompted to insert your Drivers and Applications Recovery disc. 23Reconnect all peripheral devices and replace any PC cards. Screw Screw Screw Screw

CHAPTER9: Troubleshooting 116 Safety guidelines While troubleshooting your convertible notebook, follow these safety guidelines: •Never remove the memory bay or hard drive bay cover while your convertible notebook is turned on, while the main and optional multibay batteries are installed, and while the modem cable, network cable, and AC power adapter are connected to your convertible notebook. •Make sure that you are correctly grounded before accessing internal components. •After you complete any maintenance tasks where you remove the memory bay or hard drive bay cover, make sure that you replace the cover, reinstall any screws, then replace the batteries before you start your convertible notebook. First steps If you have problems with your convertible notebook, try these things first: •Make sure that the AC power adapter is connected to your convertible notebook and an AC outlet and that the AC outlet is supplying power. •Make sure that the power cord is firmly connected to the AC power adapter. •If you use a power strip or surge protector, make sure that it is turned on. War ning Do not try to troubleshoot your problem if power cords or plugs are damaged, if your convertible notebook was dropped, or if the case was damaged. Instead, unplug your convertible notebook and contact a qualified computer technician. www.gateway.com 117 •If the convertible notebook will not turn on, try turning it on with the convertible notebook plugged in and the main and optional multibay batteries removed, then try turning the convertible notebook on with the convertible notebook unplugged and the batteries installed. •If a peripheral device (such as a keyboard or mouse) does not work, make sure that all connections are secure. •Make sure that your hard drive is not full. •If an error message appears on the screen, write down the exact message. The message may help Gateway Customer Care in diagnosing and fixing the problem. •If you added or removed peripheral devices, review the installation procedures you performed and make sure that you followed each instruction. •If an error occurs in a program, see the program’s printed documentation or the online help. CHAPTER9: Troubleshooting 118 Digital pen The convertible notebook does not respond to the digital pen •You are not using the correct pen. Use only digitizer pens sold by Gateway for your convertible notebook. The convertible notebook does not respond to other tablet pens or plastic pens. The pen tip does not line up with the pointer when you tap the screen •The digital pen and display need recalibrating in both Landscape and Portrait mode. For instructions on recalibrating your digital pen, see “Using Tablet PC” in the online User Guide. Diskette drive (external) The diskette drive is not recognized •Shut down and restart your convertible notebook. You see an “Access Denied” or “Write protect” error message •Move the write-protection tab in the upper-right corner of the diskette down (unprotected). •The diskette may be full. Delete unnecessary files on the diskette and try again. •Not all diskettes are IBM-compatible. Make sure that the diskette you are using is IBM-compatible. •Try a different diskette. Occasionally diskettes are flawed and cannot be read by the diskette drive. You see a “Disk is full” error message •Delete unnecessary files on the diskette. •Try a different diskette. Occasionally diskettes are flawed and cannot be read by the diskette drive. •Run Error checking on the diskette. If errors are detected and corrected, try using the diskette again. www.gateway.com 119 You see a “Non-system disk,” “NTLDR is missing,” or “Disk error” error message •Eject the diskette from the diskette drive, then press ENTER. •Make sure that the diskette you are using is IBM-compatible. The diskette drive status indicator is lit continuously •Remove the diskette from the drive. If the indicator stays on, try restarting your convertible notebook. Display The screen is too dark •Adjust the brightness using the system keys or Windows Mobility Center. For more information about adjusting the brightness, see “Adjusting brightness” on page 44. The screen resolution is not correct •Change the screen resolution from the Display Settings dialog box. For instructions on changing the screen resolution, see “Changing the color depth and screen resolution” in your online User Guide. The text on the display is dim or difficult to read •Adjust the brightness using the system keys or Windows Mobility Center. For more information about adjusting the brightness, see “Adjusting brightness” on page 44. •Change the display settings. For instructions on changing the display settings, see “Changing screen settings” in your online User Guide. •Move your convertible notebook away from sources of electrical interference, such as televisions, unshielded speakers, microwaves, fluorescent lights, and metal beams or shelves. The display has pixels that are always dark or too bright This condition is normal and inherent in the TFT technology used in active-matrix LCD screens. Gateway’s inspection standards keep these to a minimum. If you feel these pixels are unacceptably numerous or dense on your display, contact Gateway Customer Care to identify whether a repair or replacement is justified based on the number of pixels affected.
CHAPTER9: Troubleshooting 120 The display is blank •Adjust the brightness using the system keys or Windows Mobility Center. For more information about adjusting the brightness, see “Adjusting brightness” on page 44. •Make sure the convertible notebook is not in Sleep or Hibernate mode. Press the power button. •The convertible notebook may be sending its display to an external monitor or projector. Press FN + F4 several times to toggle through the LCD panel, an external monitor or projector, or both. DVD drives Your convertible notebook does not recognize a disc •The disc may not be seated correctly in the tray. When you place a disc on the tray, make sure that you press the disc firmly onto the spindle so the retainers hold the disc in place. •Make sure that the disc label is facing up, then try again. •If you are trying to play a DVD, make sure that you have a DVD drive. For more information, see “Identifying drive types” on page 54. •The modular drive may not be inserted completely into the modular bay. Press the module into the bay, then try to access the disc again. •Try a different disc. Occasionally discs are flawed and cannot be read by the drive. •Some music CDs have copy protection software. You may not be able to play these CDs on your convertible notebook. •Your convertible notebook may be experiencing some temporary memory problems. Shut down and restart your convertible notebook. •Clean the disc. For more information, see “Cleaning CDs or DVDs” on page 91.
www.gateway.com 121 An audio CD does not produce sound •Make sure that the CD label is facing up, then try again. •Some music CDs have copy protection software. You may not be able to play these CDs on your convertible notebook. •Make sure that the volume control on your convertible notebook is turned up. For more information about using your volume control, see “Adjusting the volume” on page 47. •Make sure that the Windows volume control is turned up. For instructions on how to adjust the volume control in Windows, see “Adjusting the volume” on page 47. •Make sure that Mute controls are turned off. •Make sure that headphones are not plugged into the headphone jack on the convertible notebook. •If you are using powered speakers, make sure that they are plugged in and turned on. •Clean the disc. For more information, see “Cleaning CDs or DVDs” on page 91. •Your convertible notebook may be experiencing some temporary memory problems. Shut down and restart your convertible notebook. •Reinstall the audio device drivers. For more information, see “Recovering pre-installed software and drivers” on page 92. A DVD movie will not play •Make sure that the label or side you want to play is facing up, then try again. •Make sure that you have a DVD drive. For more information, see “Identifying drive types” on page 54. •Shut down and restart your convertible notebook. •Clean the DVD. For more information, see “Cleaning CDs or DVDs” on page 91. •Make sure that the disc’s regional code and your DVD drive’s regional code match. •Make sure that a DVD player program has been installed on your convertible notebook. CHAPTER9: Troubleshooting 122 You cannot eject a CD or DVD Your convertible notebook must be turned on to remove CDs and DVDs. If you do not want to turn on your convertible notebook, manually eject the disc by inserting an opened paper clip into the manual eject hole. For the location of the manual eject hole, see “Using a CD or DVD” on page 55. Ethernet Ethernet troubleshooting is covered under “Networks (wired)” on page 133. File management A file was accidentally deleted •Recover the file from the Recycle Bin by following the instructions in “Deleting files and folders” in your online User Guide. Fingerprint reader The fingerprint reader does not recognize your fingerprint •Make sure that you are using the correct method for swiping your finger. For more information, see “Running the TouchStrip Tutorial” on page 35. •Make sure that you are using a finger that you have enrolled. For more information, see “Enrolling your fingerprints” on page 36. •For more information about troubleshooting the fingerprint reader, click or tap (Start), All Programs, Protector Suite QL, then click or tap Help. Caution If a file was deleted while holding down the SHIFT key or if the Recycle Bin has been emptied, the file cannot be restored.
