Copying Photos to a USB Drive51 5. Press the d button to choose Backup, then press OK. 6. Press OK again to start the backup procedure. You may have to follow additional instructions on the RX620 screen. All the photos on your card are copied to your connected storage device. Depending on how many photos there are, this may take several minutes. 7. When you’re done copying photos, remove the card as described on page 52. Note: When backing up photos to a CD-R/RW, the Stylus Photo RX620 creates a folder for each backup session. You can store multiple backup sessions on a CD-R/RW. Caution: Once the backup starts, do not disconnect the cable or interrupt the process, or you may lose data. If you need to stop the backup, press the y Stop button. Printing Your Stored Photos Once you have copied photos to your storage drive, you can print them by following these steps. 1. Connect your drive to the RX620 as shown on page 50. 2. When you see this screen, use the l and r buttons select which folder to print from, then press OK. 3. Press the Memory Card button, then follow the same steps as you would to print from your camera’s memory card. See page 23.
52Saving and Storing Photos Removing a Memory Card Once you’re finished copying photos from your memory card, follow the steps below to prepare your computer before removing it. Be sure to remove any cards before unplugging the USB cable from your RX620. Caution: Do not eject a card while the memory card light is flashing, or without performing the steps described below, or you may lose data on the card. Be sure all cards have been removed before unplugging the USB cable. 1. On a Macintosh, drag the memory card icon from your desktop to the trash. If you’re using Windows XP or 2000, click the Unplug or Eject Hardware icon on the taskbar. In Windows XP, click Safely Remove USB Mass Storage Device . In Windows 2000, click Stop USB Mass Storage Device . Note: In Windows 98 or Me, you don’t need to do anything on your computer before removing a card. 2. Remove the card by pulling it straight out of the slot.
53 Maintaining Your RX620 If you notice a decline in print quality, follow the instructions in this chapter to check and clean the print head. You’ll also find instructions on checking ink levels, replacing ink cartridges, and aligning the print head. See these sections: ■“Replacing Ink Cartridges” below ■“Checking and Cleaning and Print Head” on page 58 ■“Aligning the Print Head” on page 59 Replacing Ink Cartridges When you print with low or empty ink cartridges, you see a message on the RX620 screen. Check this icon in the upper-right corner of the screen to see which cartridge is low or empty. When a cartridge is more than six months old, print quality may decline. If necessary, try cleaning the print head as described on page 58. If printouts still don’t look their best, you may need to replace the cartridge. Checking the Ink Supply To check your ink supply, do the following: 1. Press the Setup button to enter setup mode. 2. Use the u and d buttons to select Ink Levels. 3. Press the OK button. You see a graphic showing the amount of ink available in each cartridge: B (Black) C (Cyan), LC (Light Cyan), M (Magenta), LM (Light Magenta), and Y (Yellow). 4. When you’re done checking the ink levels, press the OK button. Ink levels
54Maintaining Your RX620 When your ink starts getting low, make sure you have replacement cartridges available. You can’t print if a cartridge is empty. Purchasing Ink Cartridges Use these Epson ink cartridges within six months of installing them and before the expiration date: Note: A color ink multipack is also available (T048920). Caution: To ensure good results, use genuine Epson ink cartridges and do not refill them. Other products may cause damage to your Stylus Photo RX620 not covered by Epson’s warranty. When you need new ink cartridges, contact your dealer, or call the Epson StoreSM at (800) 873-7766 or visit www.epsonstore.com (U.S. sales only). In Canada, call (800) 463-7766 for dealer referral. Ink Cartridge Precautions Warning: Keep ink cartridges out of the reach of children. If ink gets on your hands, wash them thoroughly with soap and water. If ink gets in your eyes, flush them thoroughly with water. Caution: To avoid damaging the printer, never move the print head by hand. You can’t print if an ink cartridge is empty. Leave the empty cartridge installed in the Stylus Photo RX620 until you have obtained a replacement. Otherwise the ink remaining in the print head nozzles may dry out. Replacing Ink Cartridges55 Removing and Installing Ink Cartridges Be sure you have a new ink cartridge before you begin. Once you start replacing a cartridge, you must complete all the steps in one session. 1.If an ink cartridge is empty: Look at the message the RX620 screen to find out which cartridge is empty, then press the OKbutton. If an ink cartridge is low: Look at the icon in the upper right corner of the RX620 screen to see which cartridge is low or check the ink levels as described on page 53. Then press the Setup button to enter setup mode. Use the u and d buttons to select Ink Cartridge , then press OK. At the confirmation screen, press OK again. 2. Lift open the scanner section to access the printer area. 3. Open the ink cartridge holder. Caution: Never attempt to open the cartridge holder’s cover while the print head is moving. Wait until the cartridges have moved to the replacement position.
56Maintaining Your RX620 4. Remove the cartridge you need to replace. Press in the tab in back of the cartridge to release it, then lift the cartridge straight out. Dispose of it carefully. Note: The illustration above shows the black cartridge being removed. Only remove the cartridge(s) you need to replace. 5. Unwrap the new cartridge. 6. Insert the new cartridge into the holder. Press down firmly until it clicks into place. If you need to replace other ink cartridges, repeat steps 4 through 6 before continuing with the next step.
Replacing Ink Cartridges57 7. Close the ink cartridge holder, then close the scanner section. Caution: If you find it difficult to close the cover, make sure all the cartridges are firmly seated. Press down on each newly installed cartridge until you hear it click into place. Do not attempt to force the cover closed. The Stylus Photo RX620 begins charging the ink delivery system and the Ink Charging message appears on the screen. When you see Ink cartridge replacement is completed , click OK. Caution: Never turn off the Stylus Photo RX620 during ink charging. This may cause incomplete charging of ink.
58Maintaining Your RX620 Checking and Cleaning and Print Head If your printouts are unexpectedly light, colors are missing, or you see light or dark lines across the page, you may need to clean the print head. This clears the print head nozzles, which can become clogged if you don’t use the printer for a long time. Tip: It’s a good idea to turn on your RX620 at least once a month to maintain good print quality. Checking the Print Head You can print a nozzle check pattern to see if any print head nozzles are clogged, or to check the results after cleaning the print head. 1. Press the Setup button to enter setup mode. (If you’ve just finished cleaning the print head, the setup screen appears automatically). 2. Use the u and d buttons to select Nozzle Check, then press OK. 3. Make sure plain letter-size paper is loaded, then press OK to print the nozzle check. 4. Examine the nozzle check pattern you printed. Each staggered line should be solid, with no gaps, as shown. ■If your printout looks okay, you’re done. Click Cancel to return to the main menu. ■If you see any gaps, as shown below, press OK. Then clean the print head as described on page 59.
Aligning the Print Head59 Cleaning the Print Head Follow these steps to clean the print head so it can deliver ink properly. Print head cleaning uses ink, so clean it only if quality declines. Note: You can also clean the print head using the printer software. Click the ? or Help button on your printer settings screen for instructions on running the print head cleaning utility. 1. Make sure the Stylus Photo RX620 is turned on but not printing. 2. Press the Setup button to enter setup mode. 3. Press the u and d buttons to select Head cleaning. 4. Press the OK button, then press OK to start cleaning the print head. Cleaning takes about 30 seconds, during which the message Head Cleaning appears on the RX620 screen. 5. When cleaning finishes, print a nozzle check pattern to check the results (see page 58). If you don’t see any improvement after cleaning three or four times, check the solutions beginning on page 66. You can also turn the Stylus Photo RX620 off and wait overnight—this allows any dried ink to soften—and then try cleaning the print head again. Aligning the Print Head If your printouts look grainy or vertical lines appear jagged, you may need to align the print head. Note: You can run a print head alignment using the printer software. Click the ? or Help button on your printer settings window for instructions on running a print head alignment. 1. Make sure the Stylus Photo RX620 is turned on and not printing. 2. Load several sheets of plain letter-size paper. 3. Press the Setup button to enter setup mode, select Head Alignment, then press the OK button. 4. Press OK again to print the alignment pattern.
60Maintaining Your RX620 5. Examine the printout. For each row (#1 through #4), circle the vertical lines that are most precisely printed on top of each other. You may need to use a magnifying glass or loupe. . 6. On the RX620 screen, enter the number for the circled line in the first row by pressing the l and r buttons. 7. Press OK, then enter the numbers for the circled lines in each of the remaining rows in the same way. 8. When you’re done, you see a Head alignment completed message. Press OK to return to the Setup Menu.
