Diagnosing Printer Problems
First, check the printer’s lights (see below) or run a printer check (see page 92).

Running a Printer Check
You can run a printer check to determine whether a problem comes from the printer 
or some other source. 
1. Turn off your printer and computer, then disconnect the printer’s interface cable.
2. Load letter-size paper in the sheet feeder.
3. Hold down the 
)paper button, then press and release the Ppower button. 
Continue to hold down the 
)paper button until the Ppower light flashes.

Setup and Software Installation Problems
The printer makes noise after ink cartridge installation.
■When you install ink cartridges, the printer must charge its print head for about 
two and a half minutes. Wait until it’s finished (the green Ppower light stops 
flashing) before you turn off the printer, or it may use excess ink the next time you 
turn it on. 
■Make sure the ink cartridges are inserted completely, the ink cover is closed, and 
no packing material...

■Make sure the interface cable is securely connected at both ends and meets the 
system requirements on page 103.

You see banding (light lines).
■Clean the print head; see page 77 for 
instructions. 
■Select a higher print quality and turn off 
High Speed mode; see page 23 (Windows)

setting for your paper; see page 34.
■Make sure the printable side of the paper is face up; it’s usually whiter or shinier.
■The ink cartridges may need replacing; see page 80.

Your printout is faint or has gaps.

■Try turning off PhotoEnhance. Also check if you’re using a special effect that 
alters image colors, like Sepia.
■Change the Gamma setting. See page 23 (Windows) or page 31 (Macintosh).
■Your printed colors can never exactly match your on-screen colors. However, you 
can use a color management system to get as close as possible. See the Photoshop

4. Remove any jammed paper from the sheet feeder or open the printer cover and 
remove any paper jammed inside.
5. Place the output tray in the lower position (see page 62) and print again.
Roll paper doesn’t feed correctly or jams in the printer.
■Cut the end of the paper straight across. If it’s cut diagonally, the paper won’t feed 
smoothly.
■If the roll paper end is curled, place the end inside a folded sheet of paper and roll 
it backwards against the curl.

CD/DVD Problems
You can’t insert the CD/DVD tray easily.
Don’t force the CD/DVD tray into the printer. Make sure your printer is turned on, 
the output tray is in the upper position, and you follow all the insertion steps 
beginning on page 63.
The CD/DVD tray ejects when you start a CD/DVD print job.
Follow the steps on page 63 to reinsert the CD/DVD tray. Make sure you press the 
)paper button to load the tray before sending your print job again.

You see incorrect characters.
■Make sure the interface cable is securely connected at both ends and meets the 
system requirements on page 103. 
■Make sure your printer is selected in the Print window, or in the Macintosh Print 
Center or Chooser. 
■If you’re using a switch box or USB hub with your printer, connect the printer 
directly to your computer instead.
