    Troubleshoo\fing
This chapter provides so\futions to prob\fems that can occur durin\b the insta\f\fation and operation of the DIR-605L. Read the
    fo\f\fowin\b descriptions if you are havin\b prob\fems. (The examp\fes be\fow are i\f\fustrated in Windows
® XP. If you have a different
    operatin\b system, the screenshots on your computer wi\f\f \fook simi\far \uto the fo\f\fowin\b examp\fes.)
    1. Why can’\f I access \fhe web-based configura\fion u\fili\fy?
When enterin\b the IP address of the D-Link router (192.168.0.1 for examp\fe), you are not connectin\b to a website on the Internet
or have to be connected to the Internet. The device has the uti\fity bui\ft-in to a ROM chip in the device itse\ff. Your computer
must be on the same \uIP subnet to connect to the web-based uti\fity.
    • Make sure you have an updated Java-enab\fed web browser. We recommend the fo\f\fowin\b:
    • Internet Exp\forer 6.0 or hi\bher
    • Netscape 8 or hi\bh\uer
    • Mozi\f\fa 1.7.12 (5.0) \uor hi\bher
    • Opera 8.5 or hi\bher
    • Safari 1.2 or hi\bher (with \uJava 1.3.1 or hi\bher)
    • Camino 0.8.4 or hi\bhe\ur
    • Firefox 1.5 or hi\bher
    • Verify physica\f connectivity by checkin\b for so\fid \fink \fi\bhts on the device. If you do not \bet a so\fid \fink \fi\bht, try usin\b a different cab\fe or connect to a different port on the device if possib\fe. If the computer is turned off, the \fink \fi\bht may not be on.
    • Disab\fe any internet security software runnin\b on the computer. Software firewa\f\fs such as Zone A\farm, B\fack Ice, Sy\bate, Norton Persona\f Firewa\f\f, and Windows
    ® XP firewa\f\f may b\fock access to the confi\buration pa\bes. Check the he\fp fi\fes inc\fuded
with your firewa\f\f software for more information on disab\fin\b or\u confi\burin\b it.

    • Confi\bure your Internet settin\bs:
    • Go to S\far\f > Se\f\fings > Con\frol Panel. Doub\fe-c\fick the In\ferne\f Op\fions Icon. From the Securi\fy tab, c\fick the
button to restore the settin\bs to their defau\fts.
    • C\fick the Connec\fion tab and set the dia\f-up option to Never Dia\f a Connection. C\fick the LAN Se\f\fings button.
    Make sure nothin\b is checked\u. C\fick OK.
    • Go to the Advanced tab and c\fick the b\uutton to restore these settin\bs to their defau\fts. C\fick OK three times.
    • C\fose your web browser (if open) and \uopen it.
    • Access the web mana\bement. Open your web browser and enter the IP address of your D-Link router in the address bar. This shou\fd open the \fo\bin pa\be for your the web mana\bement.
    • If you sti\f\f cannot access the confi\buration, unp\fu\b the power to the router for 10 seconds and p\fu\b back in. Wait about 30 seconds and try accessin\b the confi\buration. If you have mu\ftip\fe computers, try connectin\b usin\b a different computer.
    2. Wha\f can I do if I forgo\f my password?
If you for\bot your password, you must reset your router. Unfortunate\fy this process wi\f\f chan\be a\f\f your settin\bs back to the
    factory defau\fts.
To reset the router, \focate the reset button (ho\fe) on the rear pane\f of the unit. With the router powered on, use a paperc\fip
to ho\fd the button down for 10 seconds. Re\fease the button and the router wi\f\f \bo throu\bh its reboot process. Wait about
30 seconds to access the router. The defau\ft IP address is 192.168.0.1. When \fo\b\bin\b in, the username is admin and \feave the
    password box empty.

    3. Why can’\f I connec\f \fo cer\fain si\fes or send and receive emails when connec\fing \fhrough my rou\fer?
    If you are havin\b a prob\fem sendin\b or receivin\b emai\f, or connectin\b to secure sites such as eBay, bankin\b sites, and Hotmai\f,
we su\b\best \fowerin\b the MTU in increments of ten (Ex. 1492, 1482\u, 1472, etc).
    No\fe: AOL DSL+ users mus\f \Ruse MTU of 1400.
To find the proper MTU Size, you’\f\f have to do a specia\f pin\b of the destination you’re tryin\b to \bo to. A destination cou\fd be
    another computer, or a URL.
    • C\fick on S\far\f and then c\fick Run.
    • Windows
® 95, 98, and Me users type in command (Windows® NT, 2000, and XP users type in cmd) and press
    En\fer (or c\fick OK).
    • Once the window opens, you’\f\f need to do a specia\f pin\b\u. Use the fo\f\fowin\b syntax:
      ping [url] [-f ] [-l] [MTU value]
    Examp\fe: ping yahoo.com -f -l 1472

    You shou\fd start at 1472 and work your way down by 10 each time. Once you \bet a rep\fy, \bo up by 2 unti\f you \bet a fra\bmented
packet. Take that va\fue and add 28 to the va\fue to account for the various TCP/IP headers. For examp\fe, \fet’s say that 1452 was
the proper va\fue, the actua\f MTU size wou\fd be 1480, which is the optimum for the network we’re workin\b with (1452+28=1480).
Once you find your MTU, you can now confi\bure your router with the proper MTU size.
To chan\be the MTU rate on your router fo\f\fow the steps be\fow:
    • Open your browser, enter the IP address of your router (192.168.0.1) a\und c\fick OK.
    • Enter your username (admin) and password (b\fank by defau\ft). C\fick OK to enter the web confi\buration pa\be
    for the device.
    • C\fick on Se\fup and then c\fick Manual Configure.
    • To chan\be the MTU enter the number in the MTU fie\fd and c\fick the Save Se\f\fings button to save your settin\bs.
    • Test your emai\f. If chan\bin\b the MTU does not reso\fve the prob\fem, continue chan\bin\b the MTU in increments
    of ten.

    Appendix A - Wire\fess Basics
D-Link wire\fess products are based on industry standards to provide easy-to-use and compatib\fe hi\bh-speed wire\fess
connectivity within your home, business or pub\fic access wire\fess networks. Strict\fy adherin\b to the IEEE standard, the D-Link
wire\fess fami\fy of products wi\f\f a\f\fow you to secure\fy access the data you want, when and where you want it. You wi\f\f be ab\fe
to enjoy the freedom that wire\fess networkin\b de\fivers.
A wire\fess \foca\f area network (WLAN) is a ce\f\fu\far computer network that transmits and receives data with radio si\bna\fs instead of
wires. Wire\fess LANs are used increasin\b\fy in both home and office environments, and pub\fic areas such as airports, coffee shops
and universities. Innovative ways to uti\fize WLAN techno\fo\by are he\fpin\b peop\fe to work and communicate more efficient\fy.
Increased mobi\fity and the absence of cab\fin\b and oth\uer fixed infrastructure have proven to be beneficia\f for many users.
Wire\fess users can use the same app\fications they use on a wired network. Wire\fess adapter cards used on \faptop and desktop
systems support the same protoco\fs as Ethernet adapter cards.
Under many circumstances, it may be desirab\fe for mobi\fe network devices to \fink to a conventiona\f Ethernet LAN in order to
use servers, printers or an Internet connection supp\fied throu\bh the wired LAN. A Wire\fess Router is a device used to provide
    this \fink.

    Appendix A - Wire\fess Basics
    Wha\f is Wireless?
Wire\fess or Wi-Fi techno\fo\by is another way of connectin\b your computer to the network without usin\b wires. Wi-Fi uses radio
frequency to connect wire\fess\fy, so you have the freedom to connect computers anywhere in your home or office network.
    Why D-Lin\b Wireless?

    D-Link is the wor\fdwide \feader and award winnin\b desi\bner, deve\foper, and manufacturer of networkin\b products. D-Link
de\fivers the performance you need at a price you can afford. D-Link has a\f\f the products you need to bui\fd your network.
    How does wireless wor\b?

Wire\fess works simi\far to how cord\fess phone work, throu\bh radio si\bna\fs to transmit data from one point A to point B. But
wire\fess techno\fo\by has restrictions as to how you can access the network. You must be within the wire\fess network ran\be area
to be ab\fe to connect your computer. There are two different types of wire\fess networks Wire\fess Loca\f Area Network (WLAN),
and Wire\fess Persona\f Area Network (WPAN).
    Wireless Local Area Ne\fwor\b (WLAN)
In a wire\fess \foca\f area network, a device ca\f\fed an Access Point (AP) connects computers to the network. The access point has
a sma\f\f antenna attached to it, which a\f\fows it to transmit data back and forth over radio si\bna\fs. With an indoor access point
as seen in the picture, the si\bna\f can trave\f up to 300 feet. With an outdoor access point the si\bna\f can reach out up to 30 mi\fes
    to serve p\faces \fike manufacturin\b p\fants, industria\f \focations, co\f\fe\be and hi\bh schoo\f campuses, airports, \bo\ff courses, and
    many other outdoor venues.

    Wireless Personal Area Ne\fwor\b (WPAN)
B\fuetooth is the industry standard wire\fess techno\fo\by used for WPAN. B\fuetooth devices in WPAN operate in a ran\be up to
    30 feet away.
Compared to WLAN the speed and wire\fess operation ran\be are both \fess than WLAN, but in return it doesn’t use near\fy as
much power which makes it idea\f for persona\f devices, such as mobi\fe phones, PDAs, headphones, \faptops, speakers, and other
    devices that operate on batteries.
    Who uses wireless?

Wire\fess techno\fo\by has become so popu\far in recent years that a\fmost everyone is usin\b it, whether it’s for home, office,
    business, D-Link has a wire\fess so\fution for it.
    Home
      • Gives everyone at home broadband access
      • Surf the web, check emai\f, instant messa\be, and etc
      • Gets rid of the cab\fes around the house
      • Simp\fe and easy t\uo use

    Small Office and Home Office
      • Stay on top of everythin\b at home as you wou\fd at office
      • Remote\fy access your office network from home
      • Share Internet connection and printer with mu\ftip\fe computers
      • No need to dedicate office space

    Appendix A - Wire\fess Basics
    Where is wireless used?

Wire\fess techno\fo\by is expandin\b everywhere not just at home or office. Peop\fe \fike the freedom of mobi\fity and it’s becomin\b
so popu\far that more and more pub\fic faci\fities now provide wire\fess access to attract peop\fe. The wire\fess connection in pub\fic
    p\faces is usua\f\fy ca\f\fed \u“hotspots”.
Usin\b a D-Link Cardbus Adapter with your \faptop, you can access the hotspot to connect to Internet from remote \focations
\fike airports, hote\fs, coffee shops, \fibraries, restaurants, and convention centers.
Wire\fess network is easy to setup, but if you’re insta\f\fin\b it for the first time it cou\fd be quite a task not knowin\b where to start.
That’s why we’ve put to\bether a few setup steps and tips to he\fp you throu\bh the process of settin\b up a \uwire\fess network.
    Tips
Here are a few thin\bs to keep in mind, when you insta\f\f a wire\fess network.
    Cen\fralize your rou\fer or Access Poin\f

Make sure you p\face the router/access point in a centra\fized \focation within your network for the best performance. Try to
p\face the router/access point as hi\bh as possib\fe in the room, so the si\bna\f \bets dispersed throu\bhout your home. If you have
a two-story home, you may need a repeater to boost the si\bna\f to extend the ran\be.
For the wire\fess repeater, there are two types of repeater in D-Link for user to se\fect:
 Universa\f repeater: It acts as an AP and a wire\fess STA at the same time. It can support a\f\f AP and wire\fess STA if they
work in the same wire\fess channe\f.
     AP-repeater (AP with WDS): on\fy repeat same mode\f or \fimi\uted mode\fs which base \uon the same proprietary protoco\f.
P\fease choose a universa\f repeater to boost the si\bna\f to extend the ran\be.
