37 Routine Maintenance 5Check the print head condition with the printed nozzle check pattern, and take appropriate action. See “Examining the Nozzle Check Pattern” on page 34. Note If the problem is not resolved after performing steps 4 and 5 twice, try Print Head Deep Cleaning. See “Print Head Deep Cleaning” on page 38.
38Routine Maintenance Print Head Deep Cleaning If print quality does not improve by standard Print Head Cleaning, try Print Head Deep Cleaning, which is a more powerful process. Note that cl eaning the Print Head causes used ink to be absorbed in the ink absorber. Print Head Deep Cleaning consumes more ink than standard Print Head Cleaning, so perform this procedure only when necessary. 1With the printer on, load a sheet of A4 or Letter-sized plain paper in the Auto Sheet Feeder. Set the Paper Thickness Lever to the left. 2Open the Front Feeder and extend the Output Paper Support. 3Open the printer properties dialog box. 4Start Print Head Deep Cleaning. (1) Click the Maintenance tab. (2) Click Deep Cleaning . (3) Select the ink group to be deeply cleaned. (4) Click Execute . (5) When the confirmation message is displayed, click OK. Print Head Deep Cleaning starts when the POWER lamp starts flashing green. Do not perform any other operations until Pr int Head Deep Cleaning finishes. This takes about 100 seconds. 5Check the condition of the Print Head. (1) Print the nozzle check pattern to check the print head condition. See “Printing the Nozzle Check Pattern” on page 32. If a particular color is not printed properly, replace the ink tank of that color. See “Replacing an Ink Tank” on page 22. (2) If the print head nozzles are still not clean, turn off the printer and perform another Print Head Deep Cleaning after 24 hours. (3) If this does not solve the problem, the Print Head may be damaged. Contact your Canon service representative. Note Clicking Initial Check Items displays the items to be checked before deep cleaning.(3) (4)

40Routine Maintenance Aligning the Print Head If ruled lines are printed misaligned or print result s are otherwise unsatisfactory, adjust the print head position. 1Make sure that the printer is on and load two sheets of A4 or Letter-sized plain paper in the Auto Sheet Feeder. Set the Paper Thickness Lever to the left. 2Open the Front Feeder and extend the Output Paper Support. 3Open the printer properties dialog box. 4Click the Maintenance tab and then Print Head Alignment . 5When the confirmation message is displayed, click Print Head Alignment . 6After the pattern is printed, click Ye s. Note You cannot feed paper from the Front Feeder when performing Print Head Alignment. Always load paper in the Auto Sheet Feeder. Important You cannot print the print head alignment pattern if paper of size other than A4 or Letter is loaded. Be sure to use A4 or Letter-sized plain paper. Important Do not open the Top Cover while printing. Note Clicking Check Setting prints the current settings and finishes Print Head Alignment.

(A) Less noticeable white streaks (B) More noticeable white streaks 8When the confirmation message is displayed, click OK. Note If it is difficult to pick the best pattern, pick the setting that produces the least noticeable vertical white streaks. Important Do not open the Top Cover while printing. (A) (B)

45 Routine Maintenance Cleaning Your Printer This section describes the cleaning procedure that is needed to maintain your printer. „Cleaning the Paper Feed Rollers (Roller Cleaning) Clean the paper feed rollers if paper is not fed properly. zCleaning the Paper Feed Roller of the Auto Sheet Feeder Cleaning the paper feed roller of the Auto Sheet Feed er will wear the roller, so perform this only when necessary. 1Make sure that the printer is turned on, and then remove any paper from the printer. 2Open the Front Feeder and extend the Output Paper Support. 3Hold down the RESUME/CANCEL button and release it when the POWER lamp flashes green three times. The Paper Feed Roller will rotate as it cleans. 4Repeat step 3 twice. 5Load three or more sheets of A4 or Le tter-sized plain paper in the Auto Sheet Feeder. Set the Paper Thickness Lever to the left. 6Hold down the RESUME/CANCEL button and release it when the POWER lamp flashes green three times. The paper cleans the Paper Feed Roller as it feeds through the printer. 7Repeat step 6 three times. If there are no signs of improvement after per forming cleaning three times, clean the surface of the roller by applying a cotton swab slightly mo istened with water to wipe off dust or stain. If the problem is still not resolved, contact a Canon service representative.
46Routine Maintenance zCleaning the Paper Feed Roller of the Front Feeder 1Turn off the printer. 2Load five or more sheets of A4 or Letter-sized plain paper in the Front Feeder. 3Hold the Rear Cover Lever and then press to the right and pull to remove the Rear Cover. 4Manually rotate the paper feed roller toward you and apply a cotton swab or the like to wipe off dust or stain. (A) Do not touch these. (B) Paper feed roller Note Paper is loaded to aid the cleaning process and will not be printed on. Caution Do not touch the small rollers (A) located on the right and left of the paper feed roller as they may come off. Note zIf the dirt is hard to remove, slightly moisten the tip of the cotton swab with water. z Paper loaded in the Front Feeder will gradually feed and eject as you manually rotate the roller. Remove ejected paper. If you run out of paper while cleaning, reload the paper in the Front Feeder. (B)(A)
