    Troubleshooting
If you think there is a problem with the camera, first check the following.
If the items below do not solve your problem, contact a Canon Customer
    Support Help Desk.
    Power
Nothing happens when the power button is pressed.
    • Confirm that the battery is charged ( = 11).
    • Confirm that the battery is inserted facing the correct way ( = 12).
    • Confirm that the memory card/battery cover is fully closed ( = 13).
    • Dirty battery terminals reduce battery performance. Try cleaning the terminals with a
cotton swab and reinserting the battery a few times.
The battery is depleted quickly.•	Battery performance decreases at low temperatures. Try warming the battery a little
by putting it in your pocket, for example, ensuring that the terminals d\
    o not touch any
    metal objects.
    • If these measures do not help and the battery is still depleted soon aft\
    er charging, it
has reached the end of its life. Purchase a new battery.
The lens is not retracted.•	Do not open the memory card/battery cover while the camera is on. Close the cover ,
turn the camera on, and then turn it off again (= 13).
The battery is swollen.• Battery swelling is normal and does not pose any safety concerns. However , if battery
swelling prevents the battery from fitting in the camera, contact a Canon Customer
    Support Help Desk.
    Display on a TV
Camera images look distorted or not displayed on a TV ( = 145).
    Shooting
    Cannot shoot.
    •	In Playback mode ( = 15), press the shutter button halfway ( = 27).
Strange display on the screen under low light ( = 27).
Strange display on the screen when shooting.
Note that the following display problems are not recorded in still image\
    s but are
    recorded in movies.
    • The screen may flicker and horizontal banding may appear under fluorescent or LED
    lighting.
No date stamp is added to images.•	Configure the [Date Stamp ] setting (= 133). Note that date stamps are not
added to images automatically, merely because you have configured the [Date/Time]
    setting (=
      41).
    • Date stamps are not added in shooting modes ( = 168) in which this setting cannot
    be configured ( = 41).
[h]	flashes	on	the	screen	when	the	shutter	button	is	pressed,	and	shooting is not possible ( = 35).
    [
] is displayed when the shutter button is pressed halfway (= 40).• Set [IS Mode] to [Continuous] (= 82).
    • Set the flash mode to [h] (= 80).
    • Increase the ISO speed (= 71).
    • Mount the camera on a tripod or take other measures to keep it still. In this case, you
should set [IS Mode] to [Off] (=
      82).
Shots are out of focus.•	Press the shutter button halfway to focus on subjects before pressing it all the way
    down to shoot (= 27).
    • Make sure subjects are within focusing range ( = 173).
    • Set [AF-assist Beam] to [On] ( = 51).
    • Confirm that unneeded functions such as macro are deactivated.
    • Try shooting with focus lock or AF lock (=
      78, 79).
No AF frames are displayed and the camera does not focus when the
    shutter button is pressed halfway.
    •	To have AF frames displayed and the camera focus correctly, try composing the
shot with higher-contrast subject areas centered before you press the shutter button
halfway. Otherwise, try pressing the shutter button halfway repeatedly.

Subjects in shots look too dark.• Set the flash mode to [h] (= 80).
    • Adjust brightness by using exposure compensation ( = 69).
    • Adjust contrast by using i-Contrast ( = 71, 103).
    • Use AE lock or spot metering (= 70).
Subjects	look	too	bright,	highlights	are	washed-out.•	Set the flash mode to [!] (= 40).
    • Adjust brightness by using exposure compensation ( = 69).
    • Use AE lock or spot metering (= 70).
    • Reduce the lighting on subjects.
Shots	look	too	dark	despite	the	flash	firing	(= 35).• Shoot within flash range ( = 172).
    • Increase the ISO speed (= 71).
Subjects	in	flash	shots	look	too	bright,	highlights	are	washed-out.•	Shoot within flash range ( = 172).
    • Set the flash mode to [!] (= 40).
White	dots	or	similar	image	artifacts	appear	in	flash	shots.•	This is caused by light from the flash reflecting off dust or airborne particles.
Shots look grainy.•	Lower the ISO speed (= 71).
    • High ISO speeds in some shooting modes may cause grainy images ( = 56).
Subjects are affected by red-eye (= 48).•	Set [Red-Eye Lamp] to [On] (= 52) to activate the red-eye reduction lamp
(= 4) in flash shots. Note that while the red-eye reduction lamp is on (for about
one second), it is not possible to shoot, because the lamp is counteracting red-eye.
For best results, have subjects look at the red-eye reduction lamp. Also try increasing
the lighting in indoor scenes and shooting at closer range.
    • Edit images using red-eye correction ( =
      103).
Recording	to	the	memory	card	takes	too	long,	or	continuous	shooting	is slower.
    •	Use the camera to perform low-level formatting of the memory card ( = 137).
Shooting settings or FUNC. menu settings are not available.•	Available setting items vary by shooting mode. Refer to “Functions Available in Each
    Shooting Mode”, “FUNC. Menu”, and “Shooting Menu” ( = 164 – 167).
The Babies or Children icon does not display.•	The Babies and Children icons will not display if the birthday is not set in face
information ( = 42). If the icons still do not display even when you set the birthday ,
re-register face information ( = 42), or make sure that the date/time are set
    correctly (= 133).
    Shooting Movies
The	elapsed	time	shown	is	incorrect,	or	recording	is	interrupted.• Use the camera to format the memory card, or switch to a card that supports high-
speed recording. Note that even if the elapsed time display is incorrect, the length
of movies on the memory card corresponds to the actual recording time ( =
      136, 172).
[] is displayed and shooting stops automatically. The camera’s internal memory buffer filled up as the camera could not record to the
memory card quickly enough. Try one of the following measures.
    •	Use the camera to perform low-level formatting of the memory card ( =
      137).
    • Lower the image quality ( = 49).
    • Switch to a memory card that supports high-speed recording ( = 172).
Zooming is not possible.•	Zooming is not possible when shooting movies in [] (= 58) and [] (= 67)
    modes.
Subjects look distorted.• Subjects that pass in front of the camera quickly may look distorted. This is not a
    malfunction.

Playback is not possible.• Image or movie playback may not be possible if a computer is used to rename files or
alter the folder structure. Refer to the Software Guide (= 19) for details on folder
    structure and file names.
Playback	stops,	or	audio	skips.• Switch to a memory card that you have performed low-level formatting on with the
    camera (= 137).
    • There may be brief interruptions when playing movies copied to memory cards that
    have slow read speeds.
    • When movies are played on a computer, frames may be dropped and audio may skip
    if computer performance is inadequate.
Sound is not played during movies.•	Adjust the volume ( = 84) if you have activated [Mute] (= 133) or the sound in
    the movie is faint.
