    Aligning the Print Head
    If ruled lines are printed misaligned or print result s are otherwise unsatisfactory, adjust the print head 
    position.
    „ Automatic Print Head Alignment
    1Make sure that the machine is turned on, open the Front Feeder, and extend the 
    Output Paper Support.
    2Load a sheet of A4 or Letter-sized plain paper in the Auto Sheet Feeder or Front 
    Feeder.
    Set the Paper Thickness Lever to the left.
    3Press the  Paper Feed Switch  to select the paper source where you have loaded 
    paper.
    4Print the Print Head Alignment Sheet.
    (1) Press the  Menu button.
    (2) Use the  [ or  ] button to select  Maintenance/settings , then press the OK button.
    The Maintenance/settings screen is displayed.
    (3) Use the  [ or  ] button to select  Maintenance, then press the  OK button.
    The Maintenance screen is displayed.
    (4) Use the  { or  }
     button to select  Auto head 
    align  and then press the  OK button.
    The confirmation sc reen is displayed.
    (5) Use the  { or  }
     button to select  Ye s and then 
    press the  OK button.
    The Print Head Alignment Sheet is printed.
    Note
    If you select  Head alignment print , the machine 
    exits the process after printing the current head 
    position adjustment values.(4)

    5Adjust the print head position.
    (1) For each row in the Print Head Alignment 
    Sheet (A, B, C, etc.), select the pattern that has 
    the least noticeable str eaks, and fill in the 
    corresponding circle ( ) with a dark pencil 
    or a black ink pen.
    (2) Load the Print Head Alignment Sheet on the Platen Glass.
    Place the marked side down and align the upper left corner of the sheet with the arrow 
    mark (alignment mark) at the upper left corner of the Platen Glass.
    (3) Press the  OK button.
    The Print Head Alignment Sheet is scanned and the print head is aligned automatically.
    „ Manual Print Head Alignment
    If the results of Automatic Print Head Alignment are not satisfactory, follow the procedure below 
    to perform Manual Print Head Alignment.
    For details on performing Automa tic Print Head Alignment, see 
    “Automatic Print Head Alignment” 
    on page 48.
    1Make sure that the machine is turned on, open the Front Feeder, and extend the 
    Output Paper Support.
    2Load two sheets of A4 or Letter-sized  plain paper in the Auto Sheet Feeder.
    Set the Paper Thickness Lever to the left.
    3Press the Paper Feed Switch  to select the paper source where you have loaded 
    paper.
    Note
    z If adjustment was not done successfully, the “Failed to scan head alignment sheet.” error 
    message is displayed on the LCD. For details, see “Error Message Is Displayed on the LCD” on 
    page 57.
    z If the results of Automatic Print Head Alignment are not satisfactory, perform Manual Print Head 
    Alignment. For details, see “Manual Print Head Alignment” on page 49.
    Important
    You cannot print the print head alignment pattern if paper of size other than A4 or Letter is loaded. 
    Be sure to use A4 or Letter-sized plain paper.

    4Print the Print Head Alignment Sheet.
    (1)Press the  Menu button.
    (2) Use the  [ or  ] button to select  Maintenance/settings , then press the OK button.
    The Maintenance/settings screen is displayed.
    (3) Use the  [ or  ] button to select  Maintenance, then press the  OK button.
    The Maintenance screen is displayed.
    (4) Use the  { or  }
     button to select  Manual head align  and then press the  OK button.
    The confirmation sc reen is displayed.
    (5) Use the  { or  }
     button to select  Ye s and then press the  OK button.
    The print head alignment pattern is printed.
    5When “Did the patterns print correctly?” is 
    displayed, confirm that  the pattern is printed 
    correctly, use the  { or  } button to select 
    Ye s , then press the  OK button.
    The input screen for the head position adjustment 
    values is displayed.
    6Adjust the print head position.
    (1) Check the printed patterns and use the  [ or  ] 
    button to input the number of the pattern in 
    column A that has the least noticeable streaks.
    (2) Move the cursor to column B, and then use the  [ or  ] button to input the number of the 
    pattern that has the least  noticeable vertical streaks.
    (3) Repeat the procedure until you finish inputting the pattern number for column K.
    Note
    If you select  Head alignment print , the machine exits the process after printing the current 
    head position adjustment values.

    (A) Less noticeable white streaks
    (B) More noticeable white streaks
    (4) Check the printed patterns and use the  [ or  ] 
    button to input the number of the pattern in 
    column L that has the least noticeable 
    horizontal streaks.
    (5) When you have finished inputting all pattern numbers, press the  OK button.
    Note
    If it is difficult to pick the best pattern, pick the setting that produces the least noticeable 
    vertical white streaks.
    Note
    When you turn off the machine, be sure to press the  ON/OFF button on the machine.
    Otherwise, the settings made here will not be saved.

    Cleaning Your Machine
    This section describes the cleaning procedure  that is needed to maintain your machine.
    „Cleaning the Platen Glass and Document Cover
    Moisten a clean, soft, lint-free cloth and wring out  excess water. With it, wipe the Platen Glass 
    (A) and the inner side of the Document Cover (w hite sheet) (B). Then wipe with another clean, 
    soft, dry, lint-free cloth, making sure not to  leave any residue, especially on the Platen Glass.
    Caution
    zBe sure to turn off the power and disconnect the power cord before cleaning the machine. 
    z Do not use tissue paper, paper towels, or similar materials for cleaning. Paper tissue powders or fine 
    threads may remain inside the machine and cause problems such as a blocked Print Head and poor 
    printing results. Use a soft cloth to avoid scratching the components. 
    z Never use volatile liquids such as thinners, benzene, acetone, or any other chemical cleaner to clean 
    the machine; these can damage the machine’s components.
    Important
    The sheet (B) is easily damaged, so wipe it gently.

    „ Cleaning the Paper Feed  Rollers (Roller Cleaning)
    Clean the paper feed rollers if paper is not fed properly.
    zCleaning the Paper Feed Rollers of the Auto Sheet Feeder
    Cleaning the paper feed rollers of the Auto Sheet Feeder will wear the rollers, so perform this 
    only when necessary.
    1Make sure that the machine is turned on, and then remove any paper from the Auto 
    Sheet Feeder and Front Feeder.
    2Press the  Paper Feed Switch  to select the Auto Sheet Feeder.
    3Clean the paper feed rollers.
    (1)Press the  Menu button.
    (2) Use the  [ or  ] button to select  Maintenance/settings , then press the OK button.
    The Maintenance/settings screen is displayed.
    (3) Use the  [ or  ] button to select  Maintenance, then press the  OK button.
    The Maintenance screen is displayed.
    (4) Use the  { or  }
     button to select  Roller cleaning , then press the  OK button.
    The confirmation sc reen is displayed.
    (5) Use the  { or  }
     button to select  Ye s, then press the  OK button.
    The Paper Feed Rollers will  rotate as they clean.
    4Repeat step 3 twice.
    5Open the Front Feeder and extend the Paper Output Support.
    6Load three or more sheets of A4 or Letter-sized plain paper in portrait orientation in 
    the Auto Sheet Feeder.
    Set the Paper Thickness Lever to the left.
    7Repeat step 3 three times.
    The paper cleans the Paper Feed Rollers as it feeds through the machine.
    If there are no signs of improvement after per forming cleaning three times, contact a Canon 
    service representative.
    z Cleaning the Paper Feed Roller of the Front Feeder
    1Turn off the machine.
    2Load five or more sheets of A4 or Letter-sized plain paper in the Front Feeder.
    Note
    Paper is loaded to aid the cleaning process and will not be printed on.

    3Hold the Rear Cover Lever and then press to 
    the right and pull to remove the Rear Cover.
    4Manually rotate the paper feed roller toward 
    you and apply a cotton swab or the like to 
    wipe off dust or stain.
    (A) Do not touch these.
    (B) Paper feed roller
    5Reattach the Rear Cover.
    Hold the Rear Cover so that the Rear Cover Lever 
    comes to the left. Align the protrusions at the right 
    edge of the cover with the slots at the rear of the 
    machine and press on the lever to reattach the 
    Rear Cover.
    „Cleaning the Inside of the Machine (Bottom Plate Cleaning)
    This section describes how to clean the inside of the machine. If the inside of the machine 
    becomes dirty, printed paper may get dirty, so we recommend performing cleaning regularly.
    1Make sure that the machine is turned on, and then remove any paper from the Auto 
    Sheet Feeder.
    2Open the Front Feeder and extend the Paper Output Support.
    3Fold a single sheet of A4 or Letter-sized plain paper in half widthwise, and then 
    unfold the paper. 
    Caution
    Do not touch the small rollers (A) located on the right 
    and left of the paper feed roller as they may come off.
    Note
    zIf the dirt is hard to remove, slightly moisten the tip 
    of the cotton swab with water.
    zPaper loaded in the Front Feeder will gradually feed 
    and eject as you manually rotate the roller. Remove 
    ejected paper. If you run out of paper while 
    cleaning, reload the paper in the Front Feeder.
    Important
    Press firmly on the Rear Cover until it is fit squarely in 
    the rear of the machine. If the Rear Cover is not 
    reattached properly, paper may not be fed properly 
    and cause paper jams.

    4Load this and only this sheet of paper in the 
    Auto Sheet Feeder with the open side to the 
    front.
    Set the Paper Thickness Lever to the left.
    5Perform bottom plate cleaning.
    (1)Press the Menu button.
    (2)Use the [ or ] button to select Maintenance/settings, then press the OK button.
    The Maintenance/settings screen is displayed.
    (3)Use the [ or ] button to select Maintenance, then press the OK button.
    The Maintenance screen is displayed.
    (4)Use the { or }
     button to select Bottom plate cleaning, then press the OK button.
    The confirmation screen is displayed.
    (5)Use the { or }
     button to select Ye s, then press the OK button.
    The paper cleans the inside of the machine as it feeds through the machine.
    If the ejected paper is smudged, clean the inside of the machine again.
    If the problem is not resolved after performing cleaning again, the protrusions inside the 
    machine may be stained. Clean them according to instructions. See “Cleaning the 
    Protrusions Inside the Machine” on page 55.
    „Cleaning the Protrusions Inside the Machine
    If protrusions inside the machine are stained, wipe off any ink from the protrusions using a cotton 
    swab or the like.
    ImportantzEven if the Front Feeder is selected as the paper source, paper will be fed from the Auto Sheet 
    Feeder.
    zDo not perform any other operation while the bottom plate is being cleaned.
    Important
    Before cleaning the inner parts, be sure to turn the machine off.
