31 After you flip out the LCD monitor, you can set menu functions, use Live View shooting, shoot movies, and playback images and movies. You can change the direction and angle of the LCD monitor. 1Flip out the LCD monitor. 2Rotate the LCD monitor. When the LCD monitor is swung out, you can rotate it up or down or face it forward toward the subject. The indicated angle is only approximate. 3Face it toward you. Normally, face the LCD monitor toward you. Using the LCD Monitor 180° 175° 90° Be careful not to force and break the hinge when rotating the LCD monitor. When not using the camera, close the LCD monitor back with the screen facing inward. This will protect the screen. During Live View shooting or movi e shooting, facing the LCD monitor toward the subject will display a mirror image on the screen. Depending on the angle of the LCD monitor, the display may turn off right before the LCD monitor is closed. COPY
32 If you turn on the power switch and the date/time setting screen appears, see page 34 to set the date/time. : The camera turns on. < 2 > : The camera is turned off and does not operate. Set to this position when not using the camera. Whenever you set the power switch to < 1> or , the sensor cleaning will be executed automatically . During the sensor cleaning, the LCD monitor will display < f>. Even during the sensor cleaning, you can still shoot by pressing the shutter button halfway (p.40) to stop the sensor cleaning and take a picture. If you repeatedly turn the power switch < 1>/ at a short interval, the < f> icon might not be displayed. This is normal and not a problem. To save battery power, the camera turns off automatically after about 30 seconds of non-operation. To turn on the camera again, just press the shutter button halfway (p.40). You can change the auto pow er-off time with [5 Auto power off ] (p.167). Turning on the Power About the Automatic Self-Cleaning Sensor 3 About Auto Power Off If you set the power switch to < 2> while an image is being recorded to the card, [ Recording ... ] will be displayed and the power will turn off after the card finishes recording the image. 33 Turning on the Power When the power switch is set to , the battery level will be indicated in one of four levels: z: Battery level is OK. x : Battery level is low, but still enough for now. c : Battery will be exhausted soon. (Blinks) n : Battery must be recharged. Battery Life The figures above are base d on a fully-charged Battery Pack LP-E8, no Live View shooting, and CIPA (Camera & Im aging Products Association) testing standards. The Battery Grip BG-E8 ap proximately doubles the number of possible shots with two LP-E8 batteries installed. The lens operation is powered by t he camera’s battery. Depending on the lens used, the number of possible shots may be lower. For the number of possible shots with Live View shooting, see page 125. 34 When you turn on the power for the first time or if the date/time has been reset, the Date/Time setting screen will appear. Follow steps 3 and 4 to set the date/time. Note that the date/time appended to recorded images will be based on this date/time setting. Be sure to set the correct date/time. 1Display the menu screen. Press the < M> button to display the menu screen. 2Under the [ 6] tab, select [Date/ Time]. Press the < U> key to select the [6 ] tab. Press the < V> key to select [ Date/ Time ], then press < 0>. 3Set the date and time. Press the < U> key to select the date or time number. Press < 0> so < a> is displayed. Press the < V> key to set the number, then press < 0>. (Returns to b.) 4Exit the setting. Press the < U> key to select [ OK], then press < 0>. X The date/time will be set. 3 Setting the Date and Time If you store the camera without the battery or if the camera’s battery becomes exhausted, the da te/time might be reset. If this happens, set the date/time again. The date/time set will star t from when you press in step 4. COPY
35 1Display the menu screen. Press the < M> button to display the menu screen. 2Under the [ 6] tab, select [Language K]. Press the < U> key to select the [6 ] tab. Press the < V> key to select [Language K] (the fourth item from the top), then press < 0>. 3Set the desired language. Press the < S> key to select the language, then press < 0>. 36 1Remove the caps. Remove the rear lens cap and the body cap by turning them as shown by the arrows. 2Attach the lens. Align the lens’ red or white index with the camera’s index matching the same color. Turn the lens as shown by the arrow until it snaps in place. 3On the lens, set the focus mode switch to (autofocus). If it is set to < MF> (manual focus), autofocus will not operate. 4Remove the front lens cap. Attaching and Detaching a Lens Attaching a Lens White index Red index Minimizing Dust When changing lenses, do it in a place with minimal dust. When storing the camera without a lens attached, be sure to attach the body cap to the camera. Remove dust on the body cap before attaching it. COPY
37 Attaching and Detaching a Lens To zoom, turn the zoom ring on the lens with your fingers. If you want to zoom, do it before focusing. Turning the zoom ring after achieving focus may throw off the focus slightly. While pressing the lens release button, turn the lens as shown by the arrow. Turn the lens until it stops, then detach it. Attach the rear lens cap to the detached lens. About Zooming Detaching the Lens Do not look at the sun directly through any lens. Doing so may cause loss of vision. If the front part (focusin g ring) of the lens rotate s during autofocusing, do not touch the rotating part. Image Conversion FactorSince the image sensor size is smaller than the 35mm film format, it will lo ok like the lens focal length is increased by approx. 1.6x.Image sensor size (Approx.)(22.3 x 14.9 mm / 0.88 x 0.59 in.) 35mm image size(36 x 24 mm / 1.42 x 0.94 in.) 38 When you use the IS lens’ built-in Image Stabilizer, camera shake is corrected to obtain a sharper sho t. The procedure explained here is based on the EF-S18-55mm f/3.5-5.6 IS II lens as an example. * IS stands for Image Stabilizer. 1Set the IS switch to < 1>. Set also the camera’s power switch to . 2Press the shutter button halfway. XThe Image Stabilizer will operate. 3Take the picture. When the picture looks steady in the viewfinder, press the shutter button completely to take the picture. About the Lens Image Stabilizer The Image Stabilizer may no t be effective if the subject moves at the time of exposure. The Image Stabilizer may no t be effective for excessive shaking such as on a rocking boat. The Image Stabilizer can operate wi th the focus mode switch set to either < f> or < g>. If the camera is mounted on a trip od, you can save battery power by switching the IS switch to < 2>. The Image Stabilizer is effective ev en when the camera is mounted on a monopod. Some IS lenses enable y ou to switch the IS mode manually to suit the shooting conditions. However, the fo llowing lenses switch the IS mode automatically: • EF-S18-55mm f/3.5-5.6 IS II • EF-S18-135mm f/3.5-5.6 IS • EF-S15-85mm f/3.5-5.6 IS US M • EF-S18-200mm f/3.5-5.6 IS COPY
39 Turn the dioptric adjustment knob. Turn the knob left or right until the nine AF points in the viewfinder look sharp. To obtain sharp images, hold the ca mera still to minimize camera shake. 1. Wrap your right hand around the camera grip firmly. 2. Hold the lens bottom with your left hand. 3. Press the shutter button lightly with your right hand’s index finger. 4. Press your arms and elbows lightly against the front of your body. 5. To maintain a stable stance, place one foot in front of the other. 6. Press the camera against your fa ce and look through the viewfinder. Basic Operation Adjusting the Viewfinder Clarity Holding the Camera If the camera’s dioptric adjustment still cannot provide a sharp viewfinder image, using Dioptric Ad justment Lens E (10 type s, sold separately) is recommended. Basic Operation 40 The shutter button has two steps. You can press the shutter button halfway. Then you can further press the shutter button completely. Pressing halfway This activates autofocusing and the automatic exposure system that sets the shutter speed and aperture. The exposure setting (shutter speed and aperture) is displayed in the viewfinder (0 ). While you press the shutter button halfway, the LCD monitor will turn off (p.179). Pressing completely This releases the shutter and takes the picture. Preventing Camera Shake Hand-held camera movement during th e moment of exposure is called camera shake. It can cause blurred pictures. To prevent camera shake, note the following: • Hold and steady the camera as shown on the previous page. • Press the shutter button halfway to autofocus, then slowly press the shutter button completely. Shutter Button If you press the shutter bu tton completely without pressing it halfway first or if you press the shutter button ha lfway and then press it completely immediately, the camera will take a moment before it takes the picture. Even during the menu display, image playback, and image recording, you can instantly go back to shoo ting-ready by pressing the shutter button halfway. COPY
