1 1 1 IMPORTANT NOTE1 In this manual, the LCD messages of the MFC-J430W are used unless specified. Most of the illustrations in this User’s Guide show the MFC-J430W. Memory storage1 Even if there is a power failure, you will not lose the settings you have chosen using the Menu key because they are stored permanently. Also, you will not lose your settings in the FAX and COPY mode key menus if you have chosen Set New Default . You may have to reset the date and time. Volume Settings1 Ring Volume1 You can choose a range of ring volume levels, from High to Off. While the machine is idle, press dor c to adjust the volume level. The LCD shows the current setting, and each key press will change the volume to the next level. The machine will keep the new setting until you change it. You can also change the volume through the menu, by following the instructions below: Setting the Ring Volume from the menu 1 aPress Menu. bPress aor b to choose General Setup . Chapter 1 2 Beeper Volume1 When the beeper is on, the machine will beep when you press a key, make a mistake, or after you send or receive a fax. You can choose a range of beeper volume levels, from High to Off. aPress Menu. bPress aor b to choose General Setup . Press OK. cPress aor b to choose Volume. Press OK. dPress aor b to choose Beeper. Press OK. ePress aor b to choose Low, Med, High or Off. Press OK. fPress Stop/Exit. Speaker Volume1 You can choose a range of speaker volume levels, from High to Off. aPress Menu. bPress aor b to choose General Setup . Press OK. cPress aor b to choose Volume. Press OK. dPress aor b to choose Speaker. Press OK. ePress aor b to choose Low, Med, High or Off. Press OK. fPress Stop/Exit . You can also adjust the speaker volume by pressing Hook. aPress Hook. bPress dor c . Each key press changes the volume to the next setting. This setting will stay until you change it again. cPress Hook.

General setup3 1 Automatic Daylight Saving Time 1 You can set the machine to change automatically for daylight saving time. It will reset itself forward one hour in the Spring and backward one hour in the Fall. Make sure you have set the correct date and time in the Date&Time setting. The factory setting is Off, so you will have to turn on Automatic Daylight Saving Time as follows. aPress Menu. bPress aor b to choose General Setup . Press OK. cPress aor b to choose Auto Daylight . Press OK. dPress aor b to choose On (or Off). Press OK. ePress Stop/Exit . Sleep Mode1 You can choose how long the machine must be idle (up to 60 minutes) before it goes into Sleep Mode. The timer will restart if any operation is carried out on the machine. aPress Menu. bPress aor b to choose General Setup . Press OK. cPress aor b to choose Sleep Mode . Press OK. dPress aor b to choose 1Min, 2Mins, 3Mins , 5Mins, 10Mins, 30Mins or 60Mins to choose which is the length of time the machine is idle before entering sleep mode. Press OK. ePress Stop/Exit .

Chapter 1 4 LCD screen1 LCD Contrast1 You can adjust the LCD contrast. If you are having difficulty reading the LCD, try changing the contrast setting. aPress Menu. bPress a or b to choose General Setup . Press OK. cPress a or b to choose LCD Settings . Press OK. dPress a or b to choose LCD Contrast . Press OK. ePress d to increase the contrast or press c to decrease the contrast. Press OK. fPress Stop/Exit. Setting the backlight brightness1 You can adjust the brightness of the LCD backlight. If you are having difficulty reading the LCD, try changing the brightness setting. aPress Menu. bPress aor b to choose General Setup . Press OK. cPress aor b to choose LCD Settings . Press OK. dPress aor b to choose Backlight . Press OK. ePress aor b to choose Light, Med or Dark. Press OK. fPress Stop/Exit. Setting the Dim Timer for the backlight1 You can set how long the LCD backlight stays on after you go back to the Ready screen. aPress Menu. bPress aor b to choose General Setup . Press OK. cPress aor b to choose LCD Settings . Press OK. dPress aor b to choose Dim Timer . Press OK. ePress aor b to choose 10Secs, 20Secs, 30Secs or Off. Press OK. fPress Stop/Exit .

General setup5 1 Mode Timer1 The machine has three temporary mode keys on the control panel: FAX, SCAN and COPY . You can change the amount of time the machine takes after the last Scan or Copy operation before it returns to FAX mode. If you choose Off, the machine stays in the mode you used last. aPress Menu. bPress aor b to choose General Setup . Press OK. cPress aor b to choose Mode Timer . Press OK. dPress aor b to choose 0Sec, 30Secs, 1Min, 2Mins, 5Mins or Off. Press OK. ePress Stop/Exit .

6 2 TX Lock2 TX Lock lets you prevent unauthorized access to the machine. While TX Lock is On, the following operations are available: Receiving faxes While TX Lock is On, the following operations are NOT available: Sending faxes Copying PC printing Scanning Operation from the control panel Note If you forget the TX Lock password, please call Brother Customer Service. (uuBasic User’s Guide: Brother numbers ) Setting and changing the TX Lock password2 Note If you have already set the password, you will not need to set it again.
