5Place t he original face up in the ADF again, if you used the ADF 
in Step 1.
6Click Start.
This time only the selected area of the original will appear in the 
PaperPort
® window (or your software application window).
7I n the PaperPort® window, use the options available to refine the 
image.
You can enlarge the portion you selected by pressing   to 
check it. If you want to select t he different  port ion, use   to 
undo t he image.

Settings in the Scanner window
Image Type
Select the image type of  output from Phot o, Web or Text. 
Resolution and Scan Type will be altered for each default setting.
The default settings are:
Resolution
You can change the scanning resolution from the Resolution drop 
down list. Higher resolutions take more memory and transfer time, 
but can achieve a finer scanned image. The following table shows 
the resolution you can choose and the available colors.

Scan Type
Brightness
Adjust this settings (-50 to 50) to obtain the best image. The default 
value is 0, representing an ‘average’.
You can set the level by dragging the slide bar to the right or left to 
lighten or darken the image. You can also type a value in the box for 
the setting.
If t he scanned image is too light, set a lower brightness value and 
scan the document again. If the image is too dark, set a higher 
brightness value and scan the document again....

Document Size
Set the Size to one of the following:
■Letter (8 1/2 × 11 in.)
■A4  (21 0 × 297 mm)
■Legal (8 1/2 × 14 in.)
■A5  (14 8 × 210 mm)
■B5  (18 2 × 257 mm)
■Executive (7 1/4 × 10 1/2 in.)
■Business Card (90 × 60 mm)
■Photo 3.5 × 5 in. (9 × 13cm)
■Photo 5 × 7 in. (13 × 18cm)
■APS C 4 × 6 in. (10 × 15cm)
■Custom (User adjustable f rom 0.35 × 0.35 in. to 8.5 × 14 in. or 8.9 
× 8.9 mm to 215. 9 × 355.6 mm)

■Width: shows the width of scanning area
■Height: shows the height  of scanning area
■Data Size: shows t he approximate data size calculated in a 
Bitmap format. The size will be different for other file formats such 
as JPEG.
You can see the actual paper size you select ed on the screen.

Scanning a document 
(For Windows
® XP only)
WIA compliant 
Windows® XP uses Windows Image Acquisit ion (WIA) for scanning 
images from the MFC. You can scan images directly into the 
PaperPort
® viewer that Brother included with your MFC or you can 
scan images directly into any other soft ware application t hat 
supports WIA or TWAIN scanning.
How to access the scanner
1Open your software application to scan a document.

Scanning a document into the PC
If you want to scan a whole page, use the ADF (aut omatic document 
feeder).
—OR—
If you want to scan a portion of t he page aft er pre-scanning the 
document, use the scanner glass (Flatbed).

6To start scanning your document, click the Sc an button in the 
Scan dialog box.
■The scanner resolution you can select is up to 1200 × 1200 
dpi.
■For resolutions greater than 1200 dpi,  use the Brother 
Scanner Utility. (See Brother Scanner Utility on page 13-15.)

PreScanning to crop a portion you want to scan using the 
scanner glass
The Preview button is used to preview an image for cropping any 
unwanted portions from the image. When you are satisfied with the 
preview, click the Scan button from t he scanner window to scan the 
image.
1Place the original face down on the scanner glass.
2Make sure you selected Flatbed in the Paper source pull-down 
box (A).
3Select  the pict ure type (B).

4In the Scan dialog box, click the Preview button.  The entire 
original will be scanned int o the PC and will appear in the 
scanning area. 
5Select the portion you want to scan by clicking the lef t mouse 
button and dragging it over the area.
6If you require advanced settings, click Pic ture Type from the 
Adj ust the quality of the scanned picture (C). You can select 
Brightness, Contrast, Resolution and Advanced Properties.  
Click the OK button after you choose...
