CHAPTER 5 ROUTINE MAINTENANCE 5–2 T T o o n n e e r r C C a a r r t t r r i i d d g g e e A new toner cartridge contains enough toner to print approximately 3,000 (standard cartridge) or 6000 (high yield cartridge) A4/Letter-size single-sided pages at about 5% coverage. ✏ Note y Toner consumption varies according to the image coverage on the page and the print density setting. The greater the image coverage, the greater the toner consumption. y If you change the print density setting for lighter or darker printing, toner consumption varies accordingly. y Wait to unpack the toner cartridge until immediately before you install it in the printer. Purchase a new toner cartridge and have it ready before you get a Toner Empty message. ✏ Note 0Both Alarm and Data (Toner) LEDs will blink continuously to indicate that the toner cartridge is nearly empty. This blinking will not stop until you have installed a new toner cartridge.

To purchase toner cartridges, consult the dealer where you purchased the printer. 1. Open the front cover. 2. Pull out the drum unit assembly.
CHAPTER 5 ROUTINE MAINTENANCE 5–4 !Caution We recommend that you place the drum unit assembly on a piece of disposable paper or cloth in case you accidentally spill or scatter toner. To prevent damage to the printer from static electricity, do not touch the electrodes shown in the illustration. 3. Press the lock lever down, and then pull the toner cartridge out of the drum unit assembly. !Caution Handle the toner cartridge carefully. If toner scatters on your hands or clothes, immediately wipe or wash it off with cold water. ✏ Note y Be sure to seal the toner cartridge tightly so that toner powder does not spill out of the cartridge. y Dispose of the used toner cartridge in accordance with local plastic waste regulations.
CHAPTER 5 ROUTINE MAINTENANCE 5–5 4. Unpack the new toner cartridge. Keeping the cartridge horizontal, gently rock it from side to side five or six times. !Caution • Wait to unpack the toner cartridge until immediately before you install it in the printer. If toner cartridges are left unpacked for a long period of time the toner life will be shortened. • If an unpacked drum unit is subjected to excessive direct sunlight or room light, the unit may be damaged. • Use a genuine Brother toner cartridge that is specially formulated to ensure optimum print quality. • Printing with a 3rd party toner or 3rd party toner cartridge may reduce not only the print quality but also the quality and life of the printer itself. It may also cause serious damage to the performance and life of a drum unit. Warranty coverage does not apply to problems caused by the use of 3rd party toner or 3rd party toner cartridges. 5. Remove the protective cover.
CHAPTER 5 ROUTINE MAINTENANCE 5–6 !Caution Install the toner cartridge immediately after you remove the protective cover. Do not touch the shaded parts in the illustration to prevent any degradation to the print quality. 6. Install the new toner cartridge into the drum unit until you hear it lock into place. When the toner cartridge is installed correctly, the lock lever is lifted automatically. !Caution Make sure you install the toner cartridge correctly or it may separate from the drum unit.
CHAPTER 5 ROUTINE MAINTENANCE 5–7 7. Clean the primary corona wire inside the drum unit by gently sliding the blue tab from right to left and left to right several times. Return the tab to the Home position () before you re-install the drum unit assembly. !Caution Make sure that you return the tab to the Home position () before you re-install the drum unit assembly in the printer; otherwise, printed pages may have vertical stripes. 8. Re-install the drum unit assembly in the printer. Close the front cover. ✏ Note 2We recommend that you clean the printer when you replace the toner cartridge. See “Cleaning” in this chapter. CHAPTER 5 ROUTINE MAINTENANCE 5–8 D D r r u u m m U U n n i i t t This printer can print approximately 20,000 pages *1 with one drum unit. *1 At 5% print coverage (A4-Letter size). The actual number of printed pages may vary depending on the average type of print job and paper. ✏ Note y There are many factors that determine the actual drum life, such as the temperature, humidity, type of paper, type of toner used, number of pages per print job, etc. Under ideal conditions, the average drum life is estimated at approximately 20,000 pages. The actual number of pages that your drum will print may be significantly less than this estimate. Because we have no control over the many factors that determine the actual drum life, we cannot guarantee a minimum number of pages that will be printed by your drum. y For best performance, use only genuine Brother toner. The printer should be used only in a clean, dust-free environment with adequate ventilation. y Printing with a 3rd party drum unit may reduce not only the print quality but also the quality and life of the printer itself. Warranty coverage does not apply to problems caused by the use of 3rd party drum unit.
