Troubleshooting 131 7 Paper jams and how to clear them7 If paper jams inside the printer, the printer will stop. One of the following LCD messages will appear to tell you where to find the jammed paper. „JAM MP TRAY(1) Paper jam in the MP tray. (See page 132.) „JAM TRAY1(2) Paper jam in the standard paper tray (TRAY 1). (See page 133.) „JAM TRAY2(3) Paper jam in the lower tray (TRAY 2). (see page 133.) „JAM TRAY3(4) Paper jam in the lower tray (TRAY 3). (See page 133.) „JAM DUPLEX(5) Paper jam in the duplex tray. (See page 135.) „JAM REAR(6) Paper jam where the paper comes out of the printer. (See page 136.) „JAM INSIDE(7) Paper jam inside the printer. (See page 139.) Check where the jam is and clear the jammed paper as follows. If the error message still appears on the LCD after you remove the jammed paper, there may be more paper jammed somewhere else. Check the printer thoroughly. After you have removed all the jammed paper, open the front cover and then close it again to start printing. Note Always remove all paper from the paper tray and straighten the stack when you add new paper. This helps prevent multiple sheets of paper from feeding through the printer at one time and prevents paper jams.
Troubleshooting 132 7 JAM MP TRAY (Paper jam in the MP tray)7 JAM MP TRAY If a paper jam occurs inside the MP tray, follow these steps: aRemove the paper from the MP tray. bPress the cover release button and then open the front cover. cTake out the drum unit and toner cartridge assembly. dRemove any paper from in and around the MP Tray, and then put the drum unit and toner cartridge assembly back in the printer and close the front cover. eFan the paper stack, and then put it back in the MP tray. fWhen loading paper in the MP tray, make sure that it touches the back of the tray and stays under the maximum paper height guides on both sides of the tray. gIf the printer does not automatically start printing, open the front cover and close it, or press Go to start printing.
Troubleshooting 133 7 JAM TRAY 1 / TRAY 2 / TRAY 3 (Paper jam inside the paper tray)7 Note The LCD names for the paper trays are as follows. „Standard paper tray: TRAY1 „Optional Lower tray: TRAY2, TRAY3 JAM TRAY1 JAM TRAY2 JAM TRAY3 If a paper jam occurs inside the paper tray, follow these steps: aPull the paper tray completely out of the printer. bUse both hands to slowly pull out the jammed paper. cPut paper below the maximum paper mark. While pressing the green paper-guide release lever, slide the paper guides to fit the paper size. Make sure that the guides are firmly in the slots. dPut the paper tray firmly back in the printer.
Troubleshooting 134 7 eOpen the front cover and close it to resume printing. IMPORTANT DO NOT take out the standard paper tray while paper is feeding from a lower paper tray as this will cause a paper jam.
Troubleshooting 135 7 JAM DUPLEX (Paper jam in the duplex tray)7 JAM DUPLEX If a paper jam occurs inside the duplex tray, follow these steps: aPull the duplex tray completely out of the printer. bPull the jammed paper out of the printer or the duplex tray. c Put the duplex tray back in the printer.
Troubleshooting 136 7 JAM REAR (Paper jam behind the back cover)7 JAM REAR CAUTION After you have just used the printer, some internal parts of the printer will be extremely hot. To prevent injury, when you open the front cover or back cover (back output tray) of the printer, DO NOT touch the shaded parts shown in the illustration. If you do this, you may get burned. If a paper jam occurs behind the face-up output tray, follow these steps: aPress the cover release button and then open the front cover.
Troubleshooting 137 7 bSlowly take out the drum unit and toner cartridge assembly. The jammed paper will be pulled out with the drum unit and toner cartridge assembly. IMPORTANT We recommend that you put the drum unit and toner cartridge assembly on a piece of disposable paper or cloth in case you accidentally spill or scatter toner. To prevent damage to the printer caused by static electricity, DO NOT touch the electrodes shown in the illustration. cOpen the back cover. dPull the tabs at the left and right hand sides toward you to open the fuser cover (1). 1
Troubleshooting 138 7 eUsing both hands, gently pull the jammed paper out of the fuser unit. CAUTION After you have just used the printer, some internal parts of the printer will be extremely hot. Wait for the printer to cool down before you touch the internal parts of the printer. fPut the drum unit and toner cartridge assembly back in the printer (press firmly). gFully close the front and back covers.

The jammed paper will be pulled out with the drum unit and toner cartridge assembly. cPush down the blue lock lever and take the toner cartridge out of the drum unit. Clear the jammed paper if there is any inside the drum unit. IMPORTANT After you have removed the jammed paper, print a few test pages. This is to make sure that the printed pages have no toner stains on them before you restart the print job. Remove the jammed paper carefully so you do not spread toner. Take care not to stain your hands and clothes with toner. Wash toner stains at once with cold water. We recommend that you put the drum unit and toner cartridge assembly on a piece of disposable paper or cloth in case you accidentally spill the toner. To prevent damage to the printer caused by static electricity, DO NOT touch the electrodes shown in the illustration. Handle the toner cartridge carefully. If toner scatters on your hands or clothes, wipe or wash it off with cold water at once.
