Troubleshooting 131 7 White Spots on black text and graphics at 94 mm (3.7 in.) intervals Black Spots at 94 mm (3.7 in.) intervals„If the problem is not solved after printing a few pages, the drum unit may have glue from a label stuck on the OPC drum surface. Clean the drum unit as follows: 7 1) Put the print sample in front of the drum unit, and find the exact position of the poor print. 2) Turn the drum unit gear by hand while looking at the surface of the OPC drum (1). 3) When you have found the mark on the drum that matches the print sample, wipe the surface of the OPC drum with a dry cotton swab until the dust or glue on the surface comes off. IMPORTANT DO NOT clean the surface of the photosensitive drum with a sharp object. „The drum unit may be damaged. Put in a new drum unit. See Replacing the drum unit on page 102. See About paper on page 6. „If you do not use the printer often, the paper may have been in the paper tray too long. Turn over the stack of paper in the paper tray. Also, fan the paper stack and then rotate the paper 180° in the paper tray. Wrinkles or creases„Make sure that the paper is loaded properly. See Printing on plain paper, bond paper or transparencies from Tray 1, 2 or 3 on page 11. „Check the paper type and quality. See About paper on page 6. „Turn over the stack of paper in the tray or try rotating the paper 180° in the input tray. Envelope Creases„Make sure that the envelope levers inside the back cover is pulled down when you print the envelope. Troubleshooting 136 7 Solving print problems7 ProblemRecommendation The printer prints unexpectedly or it prints garbage data.„Make sure that the printer cable is not too long. We recommend that you use a parallel or USB cable that is no longer than 2 meters (6.5 feet). „Make sure that the printer cable is not damaged or broken. „If you are using an interface-switching device, remove it. Connect your computer directly to your printer, and then try again. „Make sure that you have chosen the correct printer driver with ‘Set as Default Printer’. „Make sure that the printer is not connected to the same port that is also connected to a storage device or scanner. Take away all other devices and connect the port only to the printer. „Turn off the Status Monitor. The printer cannot print full pages of a document. An error message MEMORY FULL appears.„Press Go to print the remaining data in the printer memory. Cancel the print job if you want to delete the remaining data in the printer memory. (See Control panel buttons on page 84.) „Reduce the complexity of your document or cut the print resolution. „Add more memory. (See Installing extra memory on page 91.) The printer cannot print full pages of a document. An error message PRINT OVERRUN appears.„Press Go to print the remaining data in the printer memory. Cancel the print job if you want to delete the remaining data in the printer memory. See Control panel buttons on page 84. „Reduce the complexity of your document or cut the print resolution. „Add more memory. See Installing extra memory on page 91. „Set page protection to Auto by using the supplied Windows ® driver. „Change the following settings in the supplied Windows ® driver and try again. The best combination of these settings will vary depending on your document: „Graphics 1 „TrueType Mode1 „Use Printer TrueType® Fonts 1Choose the Basic tab, choose Manual in Print Settings, and then click Manual Settings.... The headers or footers appear when the document displays on the screen but they do not show up when it is printed.„Adjust the top and bottom margins of your document.

The printer cannot print EPS data that includes binary.You need the following settings to print EPS data: 1) For Windows Vista ®: Click Start button, Control Panel, Hardware and Sound, and then Printers. For Windows ® XP and Windows Server® 2003/2008: Click Start button, and select Printers and Faxes windows. For Windows ® 2000: Click Start button, and select Settings and then Printers. 2) Right-click the Brother HL-XXXX BR_Script3 series icon and select Properties. 3) From the Device Settings tab, choose TBCP (Tagged binary communication protocol) in Output Protocol.
