Troubleshooting and routine maintenance59 Error messagesC As with any sophisticated office product, errors may occur. If this happens, your machine will identify the error and display an error message. The most common error messages are shown below. Error MessageCauseAction Check Paper Size Paper is not the correct size. Load the correct size of paper and then set the Paper Size (Menu, 1 , 2). (See Paper Size on page 17.) Then, set the Tray Use for copying and printing ( Menu, 1, 5 , 1 or Menu , 1, 5, 2). (See Tray use in Copy mode on page 18 and Tray use in Print mode on page 18.) Cooling Down Wait for a while The temperature of the drum unit or toner cartridge is too hot. The machine will pause its current print job and go into cooling down mode. During the cooling down mode, you will hear the cooling fan running while the LCD shows Cooling Down , and Wait for a while .Make sure that you can hear the fan in the machine spinning and that the exhaust outlet isnt blocked by something. If the fan is spinning, remove any obstacles that surround the exhaust outlet, and then leave the machine turned on but do not use it for several minutes. If the fan is not spinning follow the suggestions below. Turn off the machines power switch and then turn it on again. If the error message continues leave the machine for several minutes and then try it again. Cover is Open The front cover is not closed completely. Close the front cover of the machine. The fuser cover is not closed completely. Open the back cover, and then open the fuser cover. Remove jammed paper if there is any, and then close the fuser cover and the back cover. The document cover is not closed completely. Remove the document from the scanner glass, and then close the document cover. Doc. Cover Open The document cover is not closed completely. Remove the document form the ADF, remove the document on the scanner glass, and then close the document cover. Document Jam The document was not inserted or fed properly, or the document scanned from the ADF was too long. See Document jams on page 62 or Using the ADF on page 10.
60 Drum Near EndThe drum unit is near the end of its life. Use the drum unit until you have a print quality problem; then replace the drum unit with a new one. See Replacing the drum unit (DR-520) on page 76 The drum counter was not reset when a new drum was installed. 1. Open the front cover, and then press Clear/Back . 2. Press 1 to reset. Duplex Disabled (DCP-8065DN only) The duplex tray is not installed properly. Remove the duplex tray and install it again. Dust on Drum The primary corona wire on the drum unit needs to be cleaned. Clean the primary corona wire on the drum unit. (See Cleaning the corona wire on page 71.) Fuser Error The temperature of fuser unit does not rise at a specified temperature within specified time. Turn the power switch off, wait a few seconds, and then turn it on again. Leave the machine for 15 minutes with the power on. The fuser unit is too hot. No PaperThe machine is out of paper or paper is not properly loaded in the paper tray. Do one of the following: „ Refill the paper in the paper tray or MP tray. „ Remove the paper and load it again. No Tray The paper tray is not completely closed. Close the paper tray properly. Out of Memory The machine’s memory is full. Copy operation in progress Do one of the following: „ Press Start to copy the scanned pages. „ Press Stop/Exit and wait until the other operations in progress finish, and then try again. Printing operation in process Do one of the following: „ Reduce print resolution. (See Advanced tab in the Software User’s Guide on the CD-ROM .) „ Clear the data from the memory by pressing Job cancel . Paper Jam Back The paper is jammed in the back of the machine. (See Paper jams on page 63.) Paper Jam Duplex The paper is jammed in the duplex tray. (See Paper jams on page 63.) Paper Jam Inside The paper is jammed inside the machine. (See Paper jams on page 63.) Paper Jam MPTray The paper is jammed in the MP tray of the machine. (See Paper jams on page 63.) Error MessageCauseAction

Replace Fuser It is time to replace the fuser unit. Call Brother Customer Service to replace the fuser unit. Replace Laser It is time to replace the laser unit. Call Brother Customer Service to replace the laser unit. Replace PF Kit1 It is time to replace the paper feeding kit for Tray 1. Call Brother Customer Service to replace the PF Kit 1. Replace PF Kit2 It is time to replace the paper feeding kit for Tray 2. Call Brother Customer Service to replace the PF Kit 2. Replace PF KitMP It is time to replace the paper feeding kit for the MP tray. Call Brother Customer Service to replace the PF Kit MP. Scanner Locked The scanner lock is locked. Open the document cover, then release the scanner lock lever, and press Stop/Exit. Toner Error The toner cartridge and drum unit assembly is not installed properly. Reinstall the toner cartridge. Toner Life End The toner cartridge and drum unit assembly is not installed properly, or the toner cartridge is used up and printing is not possible. Do one of the following: „ Re-install the toner cartridge and drum unit assembly. „ Replace the toner cartridge with a new one. (See Replacing the toner cartridge (TN- 550/TN-580) on page 73.) Toner Low If the LCD shows Toner Low, you can still print; however, the machine is telling you that the toner cartridge is near the end of its life and the toner will soon run out. Order a new toner cartridge now. Too Many Trays More than one optional tray is installed. The maximum number of optional trays is one. Remove any additional trays. Unable to Init. (Initialize) Unable to Print The machine has a mechanical problem. Turn off the machine’s power switch and then turn it on again. If the error message continues leave the machine for several minutes before you try to print, copy or scan again. Unable to Scan The machine has a mechanical problem. Turn off the machines power switch and then turn it on again. If the error message continues leave the machine for several minutes and then try it again. Document is too long for duplex scanning. Press Stop/Exit . Use a suitable size of paper for duplex scanning. See Scan on page 94. Error MessageCauseAction
62 Document jamsC If the document is jammed, follow the steps below. Document is jammed in the top of the ADF unit C The document may get jammed if it is not inserted or fed properly, or if it is too long. Follow the steps below to clear a document jam. aTake out any paper from the ADF that is not jammed. bOpen the ADF cover. cPull the jammed document out to the left. dClose the ADF cover. ePress Stop/Exit . Document is jammed under the document cover C aTake out any paper from the ADF that is not jammed. bLift the document cover. cPull the jammed document out to the right. dClose the document cover. ePress Stop/Exit . Document is jammed at the output tray C aTake out any paper from the ADF that is not jammed. bPull the jammed document out to the right. cPress Stop/Exit .

Paper jamsC To clear paper jams, please follow the steps in this section. HOT SURFACE After you have just used the machine, some internal parts of the machine will be extremely hot. When you open the front or back cover of the machine, DO NOT touch the shaded parts shown in the illustration. Paper is jammed inside the machineC aPull the paper tray completely out of the machine. bUse both hands to slowly pull out the jammed paper.
64 cPress the cover release lever to open the front cover. dSlowly take out the drum unit and toner cartridge assembly. The jammed paper may be pulled out with the toner cartridge and drum unit assembly, or this may release the paper so you can pull it out of the paper tray opening. CAUTION To prevent damage to the machine from static electricity, DO NOT touch the electrodes shown in the illustration. ePut the drum unit and toner cartridge assembly back in the machine. fClose the front cover. gPut the paper tray firmly back in the machine.

66 gPut the drum unit and toner cartridge assembly back in the machine. hClose the front cover. Paper is jammed in the duplex tray (DCP-8065DN only) C aPull the duplex tray completely out of the machine. bPull the jammed paper out of the machine or the duplex tray. cPut the duplex tray back in the machine.
Troubleshooting and routine maintenance67 Paper is jammed inside the drum unit and toner cartridge assembly C aPress the cover release lever to open the front cover. bTake out the drum unit and toner cartridge assembly. cHold down the lock lever on the right and take the toner cartridge out of the drum unit. Take out the jammed paper if there is any inside the drum unit. dPut the toner cartridge back into the drum unit until you hear it lock into place. If you put it in properly, the lock lever will lift automatically. ePut the drum unit and toner cartridge assembly back in the machine. fClose the front cover.
68 Routine maintenanceC CAUTION The drum unit contains toner, so handle it carefully. If toner scatters on your hands or clothes, wipe or wash it off with cold water at once. Cleaning the outside of the machineC CAUTION Use neutral detergents. Cleaning with volatile liquids such as thinner or benzine will damage the outside surface of the machine. DO NOT use cleaning materials that contain ammonia. DO NOT use isopropyl alcohol to remove dirt from the control panel. It may crack the panel. Clean the outside of the machine as follows: C aPull the paper tray completely out of the machine. bWipe the outside of the machine with a soft cloth to remove dust. cRemove anything that is stuck inside the paper tray.
