    8. Bridge configuration
This chapter describes how to configure the PARTNER ACS
1600 DSL module as a bridge. For more information on the
menus, submenus and commands in this chapter, see the
    “Menu interface” chapter.
A bridge is a device that connects and passes packets
between two network segments that use the same
    communications protocol.
Bridges operate at the data link layer (Layer 2) of the OSI
reference model. In general, a bridge will filter, forward, or
flood an incoming frame based on the MAC address of that
    frame.
Although the PARTNER ACS 1600 DSL module comes with
bridging enabled by default, you must still:
    Enable bridging globally
    Enable bridging by port
    Set the bridge aging timer
Disable the RIP poisoned reverse globally
Disable the RIP poisoned reverse by port
    Enable STP globally
    Enable STP by port
You can configure the PARTNER ACS 1600 DSL module as
both a router and a bridge – it depends on your application.
A router can improve overall efficiency for a complex network,
but a bridge provides better speed and flexibility for the overall
    network.

    Setting the bridge aging timer
The bridge aging timer sets the amount of time that the
PARTNER ACS 1600 DSL module keeps a MAC address in
the bridging table. When the timer reaches zero, the
database deletes the address and creates a new bridge.
To set the bridge aging timer:
    1. On the Main Menu, select Configure Bridge.
    The Bridge Configuration Menu displays.

    Enabling STP
Having many bridges creates the potential for network loops.
A loop presents conflicting information about the segment on
which a specific address is located and forces the bridge to
    forward all data.
When you enable STP, the PARTNER ACS 1600 DSL
module reconfigures the bridge network to channel data along
an optimum route to its destination.
To configure the PARTNER ACS 1600 DSL module as a
bridge, you must enable STP both globally and by port.
    Enabling STP globally
    To enable STP globally:
