Internet 171 8.3 Using Streaming Media Streaming Media lets you stream live broadcasts or on-demand media content from the web. The media is sent in a continuous stream to your device and is played as it arrives, along with the audio. The Streaming Media program allows you to play 3GP and MPEG-4 files. It also supports playback of SDP (Session Description Protocol) files. To access streaming content via Opera MobileIn Opera Mobile, you can open a web page containing RTSP (Real Time Streaming Protocol) links to streaming media content then play the content in the Streaming Media program. 1. On the Home screen, slide to the Internet tab and tap Launch Web Browser. 2. In the address bar, enter the URL address of the web page that contains the RTSP link to the desired *.gp, *.mp4, or *.sdp file. 3. On the web page, tap the RTSP link.
17 Internet 4. Streaming Media then automatically opens and starts playing the file. During playback, use the slider and button controls to play/pause, switch to full screen, replay, and fast forward. Switch to full screen mode. In full screen mode, tap to switch back. Play video from the beginning. Tap to toggle between playing or pausing the video playback. Drag the slider to go backward or forward on the video. Stop playback. View the video in its actual size, in expanded size, or in full screen. To stream media files directly on the Streaming Media PlayerStreaming Media only supports RTSP links when you stream *.gp and *.mp4 files directly on the program. 1. Tap Start > Tools > Streaming Media. 2. Tap Menu > Connect. 3. Enter the complete RTSP link, and then tap Connect. Streaming Media starts playing the file. 4. During playback, use the slider and playback control buttons to play/pause, switch to full screen, replay, and fast forward.
Internet 17 To view streaming video informationWhile streaming a video clip, tap Menu > Properties to view the video properties such as the video link or location, duration, and bit rate. To configure streaming video connection settingsTap Menu > Options to configure the Streaming Media settings. From this screen, you can set the media buffer, select the connection to use, and set all streaming videos to play in full screen. 8.4 Using Your Device as a Modem (Internet Sharing) Internet Sharing connects your desktop or notebook computer to the Internet by using your device’s data connection such as GPRS/G. You can connect via USB or Bluetooth. Before you proceedMake sure your device has a SIM card installed, and your device has a GPRS/G or dial-up modem connection. If your device has not been set up with a data connection yet, tap Menu > Connection Settings on the Internet Sharing screen. For more information about setting up these connections, see “GPRS/G” and “Dial-up” in this chapter. To set up your device as a USB modem, you must first install Windows Mobile Device Center or Microsoft ActiveSync version 4.5 or later on the computer. To use a Bluetooth connection, make sure your computer has built-in Bluetooth capability. If your computer does not have Bluetooth, you can connect and use a Bluetooth adapter or dongle. • • •
174 Internet Setting up your device as a USB modem 1. Connect the device to your desktop or notebook computer using the USB sync cable. 2. When the Connect to PC screen appears, select Internet Sharing, then tap Done. 3. Tap Connect. Using your device as a Bluetooth modemTo use your device as a Bluetooth modem for your computer, set up a Bluetooth Personal Area Network (PAN) between your device and your computer. To set up Bluetooth PAN on your device1. On your device, turn on Bluetooth and set it to visible mode. For instructions, see “To turn Bluetooth on and make your device visible” in Chapter 9. 2. Initiate a Bluetooth partnership from your device. For instructions, see “To create a Bluetooth partnership” in Chapter 9. 3. Tap Start > Internet Sharing. 4. Select Bluetooth PAN as the PC Connection. 5. Tap Connect.

On the Internet Sharing screen on your device, check whether a connected status message is displayed, which indicates that your computer has been successfully connected to the Internet using your device as a Bluetooth modem. To set up Bluetooth PAN on your computer For Windows Vista: 1. Click Start > Control Panel > Network and Internet > Network and Sharing Center. 2. Click Manage network connections and then under Personal Area Network, double-click Bluetooth Network Connection. 3. In the Bluetooth Personal Area Network Devices dialog box, select your device, and click Connect. For Windows XP: 1. Tap Start > Control Panel > Network Connections. 2. Under Personal Area Network, click the Bluetooth Network Connection icon. 3. Under Network Tasks, click View Bluetooth network devices. 4. In the Bluetooth Personal Area Network Devices dialog box, select your device, and click Connect. Note If the Bluetooth adapter or dongle on your computer was installed using a third-party driver, open the Bluetooth software that came with the Bluetooth adapter/dongle to connect your computer and device via Bluetooth. Refer to the Bluetooth adapter/dongle documentation for more information. Ending the Internet connectionOn the Internet Sharing screen, tap Disconnect.
176 Internet 8.5 Using Wireless Modem Wireless Modem offers another way to set your device as a USB modem so that you can connect your personal computer or notebook to the Internet. Note The Windows Mobile Device Center or ActiveSync connection is automatically disabled when you activate Wireless Modem. Setting up your device as a USB modemTap Start > Settings > Connections > Wireless Modem. 2. Connect the device to your computer using the USB sync cable, then tap Menu > Start. 3. On your computer, a Found New Hardware dialog box appears on screen. Click Cancel then place the Getting Started Disc in the CD/DVD-ROM drive of your computer. 4. Right-click My Computer on your PC, select Properties, then tap Hardware tab > Device Manager. 5. On Other Devices, right-click Generic Serial, and then click Update Driver. An Update Hardware Wizard dialog box appears. 6. When prompted to connect to Windows Update to search for software, select No, not this time, then click Next. 7. Select Install from a list or specific location, and then click Next. 8. Select Don’t search. I will choose the driver to install, and then click Next. 9. Select Modems on the list, and then tap Next. 10. Click Have Disk > Browse, and then point to the CD/DVD-ROM drive to search for the USB modem driver. 11. The HTC USB Modem is displayed. Note After installing the USB modem driver, create a dial-up connection on your PC. For details, see “Creating a modem dial-up connection in Windows Vista” or “Creating a modem dial-up connection in Windows XP” in this chapter. Creating a modem dial-up connection in Windows VistaAfter your computer recognizes the device as a modem, create a new modem dial-up connection on your PC. You can use this connection to dial up and connect to the Internet. On your computer, click Start > Control Panel. Double-click Network and Sharing Center. On the left panel of the Network and Sharing Center window, click Set up a connection or network. Click Set up a dial-up connection, and then click Next. Enter the dial-up connection information including the phone number, user name and password, then select the Remember this password check box. Click Connect. Your computer then starts to dial up to the Internet using your device as a modem. When a dialog box that shows you are connected to the Internet appears, click Close. 178 Internet Creating a modem dial-up connection in Windows XPAfter your computer recognizes the device as a modem, create a new modem dial-up connection on your PC. You can use this connection to dial up and connect to the Internet. On your computer, click Start > Control Panel. Double-click Network Connections. On the left panel of the Network Connections window, click Create a new connection, and then click Next. Select Connect to the Internet, and then click Next. Select Set up my connection manually, and then click Next. Select Connect using a dial-up modem, and then click Next. Enter a name for the connection, and then click Next. Enter the phone number supplied by your mobile operator, and then click Next. Select who can use the connection, and then click Next. Enter the phone number supplied by your mobile operator, and then click Next. Enter the user name and password supplied by your mobile operator. If you do not want this dial-up connection to be the default on your PC, clear the Make this the default Internet connection check box. Click Next, and then click Finish. Select the dial-up connection on the list, then tap Connect. 5. The Connect [your connection name] dialog box appears. Click Dial to dial up and connect to the Internet.
