82Tyros4 Owner’s Manual 8 8 Vocal Harmony – Adding Harmony Vocals and Synth Vocoder to Your Singing – The Vocal Harmony feature lets you automatically apply harmony vocals in three different sub-modes (Chordal, Vocoder and Vocoder- Mono) to your voice as you sing into the connected microphone. Newly enhanced for the Tyros4, Vocal Harmony features a new har- mony‐generating engine (called VH2 ) that provides extraordinarily realistic harmonies, quickly and accu rately tracking the pitch of your singing, and effectively maintaining the natural qualities of your voice in the harmony parts. Included in the feature is a Synth Vocoder effect, also newly enhanced for the Tyros4. Synth Vocoder lets you graft the unique characteristics of your voice onto synthesizer and other sounds, for unusual machine‐like or robotic effects, as well as luscious choir sounds, which you can control with your own singing and playing. The Synth Vocoder is a complex effect that mimics the work ings of the human voice. This effect extracts the nat- ural filter characteristics of the voice from the microphone input and recreates the vocal formants by the use of multiple band pass filters. The machine-like ‘robot’ voi ce is created by passing the pitched sounds of musical instruments (such as a synthesi zer sound) through the filters. Both Vocal Harmony and Synth Vocoder have an extens ive set of detailed parameters, giving you comprehen- sive, flexible control of the sound. VH2 Structure The sub-mode of each Type can be edit ed. For information on editing, refer to the Reference Manual on the website. Vocal Harmony ModeLets you automatically apply harmony vocals in three different sub mode s (Chordal, Vocoder and Vocoder-Mono) to your voice as you sing into the connected microphone. IconSub-modeEffect (Microphone) Chordal The harmony notes are determined by the following three types of chord control: 1Chords played in the chord section of the keyboard (with the [ACMP] turned on.) 2Chords played in the LEFT Voice section of the keyboard (with the [ACMP] turned of f and [LEFT] turned on.) 3Chords contained in Song data for controlling the harmony. (Not available if the Song does not contain any chord data.) (Microphone with FX) The harmony notes are determined in the same way as in Microphone above. However, effects such as Vocal Doubler and Short Delay are applied. Harmony may or may not be applied depending on the selected type. (If harmony is no t applied, the [VOCAL HARMONY] button is not lit.) (Microphone and key- board) Vocoder The harmony notes are determ ined by the notes you play on the key- board and/or Song data. You can spec ify whether the Vocoder effect is controlled by your keyboard perfo rmance or by the Song data. Vocoder- Mono The harmony notes are determined in the same way as in Vocoder above. However for the Mono mode, the harmonies apply only to the sound of the last-pressed key. Synth Vocoder Mode (Microphone and carrier) Lets you graft the unique char acteristics of your voice onto synthesizer and other sounds, for unusual machine‐like or robotic effects, as well as luscious choir sounds, which you can control with your own singing and playing.
Tyros4 Owner’s Manual83 8 Vocal Harmony – Adding Harmony Vocals and Synth Vocoder to Your Singing –The main use for Vocal Harmony is in live performance. Not only does the Tyros4 give you professional quality instru- mental accompaniment as you play, it also lets you add pr ofessional quality vocal harmonies to your singing—as you perform! The three diff erent Vocal Harmony sub-modes (Chordal, Vocoder and Vocoder-Mono) produce harmony in dif- ferent ways. 1Connect a microphone to the Tyros4, then adjust the [MIC GAIN] while singing into the microphone. For information on the connection, refer to “Connecting a Microphone” on pages 94–95. 2From the Main display, adjust the balance of the microphone (MIC) sound with the other sounds of the instrument (i.e., Song, Style, Voices, Audio Recorder/Player, Multi Pads, etc.). Use the [BALANCE] button to switch between the two Balance pages. (See page 53.) 3Press the [VH TYPE SELECT] button to call up the Vocal Har- mony Type Selection display. 4Use the TAB [ ][ ] buttons to select the VOCAL HARMONY tab. 5Use the [A]–[J] buttons to select the desired Vocal Harmony type. To call up the other display pages for further selections, press one of the [1 ]–[5 ] buttons or press the [VH TYPE SELECT] button again. 6If necessary, press the [VOCAL HARMONY] button to turn the function on. Using Vocal Harmony You may find that the microphone sound is distorted. If so, try adjusting the sound, making sure that the INPUT LEVEL meter does not light in orange or red in the MIC SETTING display (called up by pressing the [MIC SETTING] but- ton). For details on the input level, refer to the Reference Manual, Chapter 11. NOTE 3 6 5 4 NEXT PAGE
84Tyros4 Owner’s Manual 7Follow the steps below, depending on which Type (and sub- mode) you selected. If you selected one of the Chordal Types: The harmony of the Chordal Types can be controlled in three different ways (as explained in the VH2 Structure chart on pa ge 82). These instructions use the first way. 7-1Turn the [ACMP] button on. 7-2Play and hold down chords in the chord section of the keyboard as you sing along with th e accompaniment. Vocal harmonies based on your own voice are applied to your singing, according to the chords you play. If you selected one of the Vocoder or Vocoder-Mono Types: 7-1Call up the SETUP window in the display by pressing the [8 ] button. 7-2Use the [4 ]/[5 ] buttons to change the Keyboard setting (OFF, UPPER, LOWER), if necessary. Select UPPER if you want to have the Vocoder processing on your right- hand-played part; select LOWER to have the Vocoder effect on your left- hand part. For more information on the Keyboard setting to control the Vocoder effect, refer to the Reference manual on the website. 7-3Play melodies on the keyboard, and speak into the microphone as you play. You’ll notice that you don’t actually have to sing pitched notes. The Vocoder effect takes the words you say and applies them to the pitch of the instrument sounds. If you selected a Type having an “FX” icon, your voice will be processed with effects, but may not have harmonies applied. NOTE 7-2 7-1 For Vocoder Types, the effect is applied to a maximum of three notes of the chord you play; for Vocoder-Mono, the effect is only applied to single notes (last note played). NOTE

88Tyros4 Owner’s Manual Compressor is an effect commonly used to limit and compress the dynamics (softness/loudness) of an audio signal. For signals that vary widely in dynamics, su ch as vocals and guitar parts, it “squeezes” the dynamic range, effectively making soft sounds louder and loud sounds softer. When used with ga in to boost the overall level, this creates a more powerful, more consistently high-level sound. Editing Master Compressor Settings Select the [CMP] tab in step 2 on page 86. Create your own original Drum Voices then save as Style data The Mixing Console function (KIT EDIT) lets you to create original Drum Voices using the Preset Drum Voices of the rhythm channel (Style Part).
