By connecting a computer to the [USB TO HOS T] terminal, you can transfer data between
the Tyros4 and the computer via MIDI, and use the computer to cont rol, edit and organize
data on the Tyros4. For exampl e, you can use the included Voice Editor program to edit
    the Tyros4’s Custom Voices.
    Connecting to a Computer
You need to install a USB-MIDI driver to
connect the computer and the instru-
ment. Refer to the separate Installation
    Guide.
You can also use the MIDI IN/OUT ter-
minals to connect to a computer. In this
case, a USB-MIDI interface (such as the
Yamaha UX16) is needed. For more

    • Execute the following before tu rning the power to the instru-
ment on/off or plugging/unplugging the USB cable to/from the
    [USB TO HOST] terminal.
    • Quit any open application software on the computer.
    • Make sure that data is not be ing transmitted from the instru-
ment. (Data is transmitted only by playing notes on the key-
board or playing back a song.)
    • While the computer is connected to the instrument, you should wait for six seconds or more between these operations: (1)
when turning the power of the instrument off then on again, or
    (2) when alternately connecting/disconnecting the USB cable.

Installing the Optional Fl ash Memory Expansion Module
Installing an optional flash memory expansion module to the Tyros4 allows you to import Wave files on a USB storage
device or hard disk drive, letting you create your own original Voices, Normal Voices and Drum Voices. (For information
on creating original Voices, refer to the Reference Manual on th e website.) This section explains how to install an expan-
    sion module to the Tyros4.
    • Do not touch the exposed metal parts in the circuit board. Touching these parts may result in a faulty con-
    tact.
    • Be careful not to mi splace any of the screws since all of
    them are used.
    • Be careful of static electricity. Static electricity dis- charge can damage the module or the instrument.
Before you handle the module , to reduce the possibility
of static electricity, touch some unpainted metal surface
or a ground wire on a device that is grounded.
    • Do not use any screws other than what are installed on
    the instrument.
    • It is recommended that you wear gloves to protect your hands from metallic projectio ns on the optional unit and
other components. Touching l eads or the connector with
bare hands may cause finger cu ts, and may also result in
poor electrical contact or electrostatic damage.
    • Handle the optical unit with care. Dropping or subjecting it to any kind of shock may cause damage or result in a
    malfunction.
    CAUTION
    • Before beginning installation, switch off the power to the Tyros4 and con-nected peripherals, and unplug them from the power outlet. Installation or
removal of any devices should be started ONLY after the instrument (and the
optional hardware) returns to normal room temperature. Then remove all
cables connecting the Tyros4 to other devices. (Leaving the power cord con-
nected while working can result in electric shock. Leaving other cables con-
    nected can interfere with work.)
    • Be careful not to drop any screws inside the instrument during installation (this can be prevented by keeping the optional unit and cover away from the
instrument while attachi ng). If this does happen, be sure to remove the
screw(s) from inside the instrument befo re turning the power on. Loose screws
inside the instrument can cause improper operation or serious damage. If you
are unable to retrieve a dropped screw, consult your Yamaha dealer for
    advice.
    • Install the optional unit carefully as described in the procedure below. Improper installation can cause shorts which may result in irreparable damage
    and pose a fire hazard.
    • Do not disassemble, modify, or apply excessive force to board areas or the connector on an optional mo dule unit. Bending or tampering with the board
and connector may lead to electric shock, fire, or equipment failures.

    Troubleshooting
    Overall
A click or pop is heard when the power is
turned on or off. This is normal. Electrical current
is being applied to the instrument.
Noise is heard from the instrument. Noise may be heard if a mobile phone is used near the instrument or if the phone is ringing. Turn off the mobile phone, or use it further away from the instrument.
In the LCD display, there are some black
points (unlit) or white points (always lit). These are the result of defective pixels
and occasionally occur in TFT-LCDs; they do
not indicate a problem in operation.
There is a slight difference in sound quality
among different notes played on the keyboard. This is normal and is a result of the instrument’s sampling system.
Some Voices have a looping sound.
Some noise or vibrato is noticeable at higher
    pitches, depending upon the Voice.
The overall volume is too low, or, no sound is
heard. The master volume may be set too low. Set it to an appropriate level with the [MASTER
    VOLUME] control.
All keyboard parts are set to off. Use the
    PART ON/OFF [RIGHT 1]/[RIGHT 2]/[RIGHT
3]/[LEFT] button to turn it on (page 35).
The volume of individual parts may be set too low. Raise the volume in the BALANCE
    display (page 53).
Make sure the desired channel is set to on in the CHANNEL display (pages 52, 62).
Headphones are connected, disabling the speaker output. Unplug the headphones.
If volume control is assigned to the [ASSIGN] sl ider or foot controller, set it to an appro-
    priate level.
The [FADE IN/OUT] button is on, muting the sound. Press the [FADE IN/OUT] button to
    turn the function off.
A plug is inserted in the LOOP SEND jacks. Unplug the LOOP SEND jacks.
Connect the footswitch to the appropriate jack.
Check whether the external speaker is c onnected and the volume control is adjusted
    properly (pages 96, 106).
The sound is distorted or noisy. The volume may be turned up t oo high. Make sure all relevant volume settings are
    appropriate.
This may be caused by certain effects or filt er resonance settings. Check the effect or
filter settings and change them accordingly, referring to the Reference Manual on the
    website.
Not all simultaneously played notes sound. You are probably exceeding the maximum polyphony of the instrument. The instrument
can play up to 128 notes at the same time including RIGHT 1/RIGHT 2/RIGHT 3/LEFT
Voices, Style, Song, and Multi Pad notes. When the maximum polyphony is exceeded,
the least important notes (such as soft not es and notes currently decaying) will stop
    sounding first.
The keyboard volume is lower than the Style/
Song playback volume. The volume of the keyboard parts may be set too low. Raise the volume in the BAL-
    ANCE display (page 53).
The [ASSIGN] slider may be set to a low level. (By default, keyboard volume is
assigned to the [ASSIGN] slider.) Set it to an appropriate level.
The Main display does not appear even when
turning the power on. This may occur if a USB storage device has been installed to the instrument. Installa-
tion of some USB storage devices may result a long interval between turning the power
on and appearance of the Main display. To av
oid this, turn the power on after discon-
    necting the device.
Some characters of the file/folder name are
garbled. The language settings have been changed. Set the appropriate language for the file/
    folder name (page 17).
An existing file is not shown. • The file extension (.MI D, etc.) may have been changed or deleted. Manually rename
the file, adding the appropriate extension, on a computer.
    • Data files with names of more than 50 characters cannot be handled by the instru- ment. Rename the file, reducing the number of characters to 50 or less.
The Premium Pack data cannot be purchased. Before purchasin g the Premium Pack data, obtain the license key (page 38).
