Customizing HotSync application settings (Conduit)
What is a “Conduit”?
For each application, you can define a set of options that determines how
records are handled during synchronization. These options are called
“conduit.” By default, a HotSync operation synchronizes all files between
your CLIÉ handheld and the Palm Desktop for CLIÉ software.

The Change HotSync Action dialog box appears.

Conducting an IR HotSync operation
You can use the IR (infrared) port of your CLIÉ handheld to perform an IR
HotSync operation with a computer equipped with an IrDA (Infrared Data
Association) IR port. An IR HotSync operation allows you to perform a
HotSync operation without using the USB cable.
Before you start performing an IR HotSync operation
Check the following:
•Your computer is equipped with an infrared port...

3Click the Local tab to change the setting for an IR HotSync
operation as needed.
•Serial Port: Specifies a virtual port for an infrared port. If you are
not sure of the connection port, see the Infrared Monitor in the
Windows Control Panel.
•Speed: Determines the speed at which data is transferred. Try the
“As Fast As Possible” rate first, and then adjust downward if you
experience problems.

For best results, your computer and your CLIÉ handheld should be 4 to 8 inches
(approximately 10 to 20 centimeters) apart, and the path between your CLIÉ
handheld and the computer must be clear of obstacles.

Conducting a HotSync operation via modem
You can use a modem to synchronize your CLIÉ handheld when you are
away from your computer. A HotSync operation via modem allows you to
back up your CLIÉ data to your computer away from your computer.
Notes
•The first HotSync operation must be local, using the USB cable. After that, you can
perform a modem HotSync operation.

Preparing your computer
There are a few steps you must perform to prepare your computer for a
modem HotSync operation. Be sure to perform these steps before you leave
your office or home so that your computer is ready to receive a call from
your CLIÉ handheld.
1Check the following to prepare your computer for a modem

•The computer modem must be connected to your computer and
