11US Guide to the Control Menu Display Use the Control Menu to select a function and to view re lated information. Press DISPLAY repeatedly to turn on or change the Control Menu display as follows: Control Menu display The Control Menu display 1 and 2 will show different items depending on the disc type. Example: Control Menu display 1 when playing a DVD VIDEO. *1Displays the scene number for VIDEO CDs (PBC is on), track number for VIDEO CDs/ CDs, album number for DATA CDs/DATA DVDs. * 2Displays the index nu mber for VIDEO CDs, MP3 audio track number, or JPEG image file number for DATA CDs/DATA DVDs. * 3Displays Super VCD as “SVCD.” *4Displays the date for JPEG files. 12US List of Control Menu items zHint The Control Menu icon indicator lights up in green when you select any item except “OFF” (“PROGRAM,” “SHUFFLE,” “REPEAT,” “A-B REPEAT,” “SHARPNESS,” “TVS” only). The “ORIGINAL/PLAY LIST” indicator lights up in green when you select “PLAY LIST” (default setting). The “CUSTOM PICTURE MODE” indicator lights up in green when any setting other than “STANDARD” is selected. The “AV SYNC” indicator lights up in green when set to more than 0 ms. Item Item Name, Function DISC Selects the disc to be played. TITLE/SCENE/TRACK Selects the title, scene, or track to be played. CHAPTER/INDEX Selects the chapter or index to be played. TRACK Selects the track to be played. TIME/TEXT Checks the elapsed time and the remaining playback time. Input the time code for picture and music searching. ORIGINAL/PLAY LIST Selects the type of titles (DVD-VR mode) to be played, the ORIGINAL one, or an edited PLAY LIST. PROGRAM Selects the title, chapter, or track to play in the order you want. SHUFFLE Plays the title, chapter, or track in random order. REPEAT Plays the entire disc (all titles/all tracks/all albums) repeatedly or one title/chapter/track/album repeatedly. A-B REPEAT Specifies the parts you want to play repeatedly. CUSTOM PICTURE MODE Adjusts the video signal from the player. You can select the picture quality that best suits the program you are watching. SHARPNESS Exaggerates the outline of the image to produce a sharper picture. TVS (TV Virtual Surround) Selects the surround functions. AV SYNC Adjust the delay between the picture and sound. PARENTAL CONTROL Set to prohibit playback on this player. SETUP QUICK Setup Use Quick Setup to choose the desired language of the on-screen display, the aspect ratio of the TV, and the audio output signal. CUSTOM Setup In addition to the Quick Setup setting, you can adjust various other settings. RESET Returns the settings in “SETUP” to the default setting. ALBUM Selects the album that contains MP3 audio track and JPEG image file to be played. FILE Selects the JPEG image file to be played. DATE Displays the date the picture was taken by a digital camera. INTERVAL Specifies the duration for which the slides are displayed on the screen. EFFECT Selects the effects to be used for changing slides during a slide show. MODE (MP3, JPEG) Selects the data type; MP3 audio track (AUDIO), JPEG image file (IMAGE), or both (AUTO) to be played when playing a DATA CD or DATA DVD. t
13US Guide to the ‘BRAVIA Sync’ Display You can control the player by selecting the SYNC MENU button on the TV’s remote or TV’s option menu. ‘BRAVIA Sync’ display The ‘BRAVIA Sync’ display will show different items depending on the disc type. Example: ‘BRAVIA Sync’ display when playing a DVD VIDEO Select an item using C/X/x/c and then press ENTER. ◆When playing a DVD VIDEO Displays MENU, TOP MENU and DISC SKIP. ◆When playing in DVD-VR mode Displays ., >, DISC SKIP, and chapter number. ◆When playing a CD, VIDEO CD, or Super VCD (without PBC) Displays ., >, DISC SKIP, and track number. ◆When playing a VIDEO CD or Super VCD (with PBC) (page 27) Displays ., >, DISC SKIP, and scene number. When the disc’s menu appears, you can select an item by pressing X/x. ◆When playing a DATA CD or DATA DVD Displays MENU, PICTURE NAVI, and DISC SKIP. To turn off the display Press RETURN or SYNC MENU button on the TV’s remote. zHint You can also control these functions on the player’s remote. Notes The items in the ‘BRAVIA Sync’ display have the same functions as the player’s remote buttons (page 10). You can only use this function if your TV supports the ‘BRAVIA Sync’. For more details of ‘BRAVIA Sync’, please refer to the operation instructions supplied with the TV.
14US Hookups Hooking Up the Player Follow steps 1 to 6 to hook up and adjust the settings of the player. Notes Plug cords securely to prevent unwanted noise. Refer to the instructions supplied with the components to be connected. You cannot connect this player to a TV that does not have a video input jack. Be sure to disconnect the power cord of each component before connecting. 15US Hookups Step 2: Connecting the Video Cords/HDMI Cords Connect this player to your TV monitor, projector, or audio component such as an AV amplifier (receiver) using a video cord. Select one of the patterns A through D, according to the input jack on your TV monitor, projector, or audio component. In order to view progressive signal (480p) pictures with a compatible TV, projector, or monitor, you must use pattern C. Select pattern D when connecting to a TV, projector, or audio component equipped with HDMI input. C Component video input jacks (Y, P B, PR) You will enjoy accurate color reproduction and high quality images. If your TV accepts progressive 480p format signals, use this connection and set “PROGRESSIVE (COMPONENT OUT ONLY)” in “SCREEN SETUP” to “ON” (page 57) to output progressive signals. D HDMI/DVI input jack Use a certified Sony HDMI cord to enjoy high quality digital picture and sound through the HDMI OUT jack. When connecting to a Sony TV that is compatible with the CONTROL FOR HDMI function, see page 17. When connecting to the HDMI OUT jack Follow the steps below. Improper handling may damage the HDMI OUT jack and the connector. 1Carefully align the HDMI OUT jack on the back of the player and the HDMI connector by checking their shapes. Make sure the connector is not upside down or tilted. 2Insert the HDMI connector straight into the HDMI OUT jack. Do not bend or apply force to the HDMI connector. To connect to a TV with DVI input Use an HDMI-DVI converter cord (not supplied). The DVI jack will not accept any audio signals, so you have to use another audio connection in addition to this connection (page 18). Furthermore, you cannot connect the HDMI OUT jack to DVI jacks that are not HDCP compliant (e.g., DVI jacks on PC displays). When connecting to a standard 4:3 screen TV Depending on the disc, the image may not fit your TV screen. To change the aspect ratio, see page 56. Notes Do not connect a VCR, etc., between your TV and the player. If you pass the player signals via the VCR, you may not receive a clear image on the TV screen. If your TV has only one audio/video input jack, connect the player to this jack. If the picture appears too white when you are using A or B connection, set “BLACK LEVEL” in “SCREEN SETUP” to “OFF” (page 57). Be sure to disconnect the HDMI cord when moving the player. Do not apply too much pressure to the cabinet wall, if you place the player on the cabinet with the HDMI cord connected. It may damage the HDMI OUT jack or the HDMI cord. 17US Hookups About the CONTROL FOR HDMI functions for ‘BRAVIA Sync’ (for HDMI connections only) By connecting to Sony components that are compatible with the CONTROL FOR HDMI function with an HDMI cord (not supplied), you can enjoy the following features: One-Touch Play (page 24) System-Power Off When you turn the TV off by using the [/1 button on the TV’s remote, the components compatible with CONTROL FOR HDMI function turn off automatically. To prepare for the ‘BRAVIA Sync’ features Set “CONTROL FOR HDMI” to “ON” in “HDMI SETUP” (page 62). For details on TV setting, refer to the operating instructions supplied with the TV. Note Depending on the connected component, the CONTROL FOR HDMI function may not work. Refer to the operating instructions supplied with the component.
18US Step 3: Connecting the Audio Cords Select one of the following patterns A or B, according to the input jack on your TV monitor, projector, or audio component such as an AV amplifier (receiver). 19US Hookups A Audio L/R input jacks This connection will use your TV’s or audio component’s two speakers for sound. B Digital audio input jack If your audio component has a Dolby*1 Digital or DTS*2 decoder and a digital input jack, use this connection. You can enjoy Dolby Digital (5.1ch) and DTS (5.1ch) surround effect. If you connect to a Sony audio component that is compatible with the CONTROL FOR HDMI function, refer to the operating instructions supplied with the audio component. *1Manufactured under license from Dolby Laboratories. Notes After you have completed the connection, be sure to set “DOLBY DIGITAL” to “DOLBY DIGITAL” and “DTS” to “ON” in Quick Setup (page 22). When you connect an audio component that conforms to the 96 kHz sampling frequency, set “48kHz/96kHz PCM” in “AUDIO SETUP” to “96kHz/24bit” (page 60). The TVS effects of this player cannot be used with this connection. When you connect the player to an audio component using an HDMI cord, you will need to do one of the following: – Connect the audio component to the TV with the HDMI cord. – Connect the player to the TV with a video cord other than HDMI cord (component video cord, S VIDEO cord, or audio/video cord). When connecting to the HDMI OUT jack, carefully align the HDMI connector with the jack. Do not bend and apply force to the HDMI cord.
20US Step 4: Connecting the Power Cord Plug the player and TV power cords into an AC outlet. Step 5: Preparing the Remote You can control the player using the supplied remote. Insert two R6 (size AA) batteries by matching the 3 and # ends on the batteries to the markings inside the compartment. When using the remote, point it at the remote sensor on the player. Notes Do not leave the remote in an extremely hot or humid place. Do not drop any foreign object into the remote casing, particularly when replacing the batteries. Do not expose the remote sensor to direct light from the sun or a lighting apparatus. Doing so may cause a malfunction. If you do not use the remote for an extended period of time, remove the batteries to avoid possible damage from battery leakage and corrosion.
