Entering text To enter text, you will need software (an application) that is compatible with your CLIÉ handheld. The HotSync® operation is an easy operation that allows you to synchronize files/data between your CLIÉ handheld and computer. With just one press of the HotSync button, you can synchronize your CLIÉ handheld application files/data with Palm™ Desktop for CLIÉ files/data on your computer, back up the files/data of your CLIÉ handheld on your computer, and install add-on applications. 1Synchronizing the files/data between your CLIÉ handheld and computer Synchronizes the data of Date Book, Address Book , To Do List , and Memo Pad between your CLIÉ handheld and computer. You can manage the files/ data of multiple CLIÉ handhelds separately using Palm™ Desktop for CLIÉ . 2 Saving backup data or applications on your computer Automatically creates a backup of the data or applications currently held in your CLIÉ handheld to your computer. If you delete data or applications by accident, or if you need to perform a hard reset, the HotSync ® operation allows you to restore the data or applications using the backup data or applications on your computer. You may not be able to create a back up of certain contents by the HotSync ® operation. For details on backing up data and applications, refer to page 162. Performing the HotSync® operation with the USB cable (Local HotSync ®) Performing the HotSync® operation with the USB cable supplied with your CLIÉ handheld is called the Local HotSync® operation. 1Connect your CLIÉ handheld to your computer with the USB cable supp lied with your CLIÉ handheld. 2Tap (Home). The CLIE Launcher is displayed. 3Rotate the Jog Dial™ navigator to select (HotSync), and then press the Jog Dial™ navigator. The HotSync screen is displayed. Note Do not disconnect your CLIÉ handheld from your computer until the HotSync® operation is complete. Also, do not insert or remove the “Memory Stick” media while the HotSync® operation is being performed. Otherwise, Palm™ Desktop for CLIÉ may not finish normally. If the HotSync® operation does not start Make sure that (HotSync) is displayed in the Windows task tray (Notification area). If (HotSync) is not displayed in the task tray (Notification area), click [Start], select [Programs] ([All Programs] for Windows XP) - [Sony Handheld], and click [HotSync Manager]. Check that (HotSync) is displayed in the task tray (Notification area) and tap (HotSync) on the screen of your CLIÉ handheld to start the HotSync® operation. The message is displayed on your computer window when the HotSync ® operation starts. * From this point onwards, where Windows XP Home Edition and Windows XP Professional are common, they will both be referred to as Windows XP. **In Windows XP, the task tray is called “Notification area”. In this manual, it is written as “task tray (Notification area)”. Tip If you cannot perform the HotSync® operation Refer to “Troubleshooting Q&A”.

Additionally, Palm™ Desktop for CLIÉ has the same functions as Date Book, Address Book , To Do List , and Memo Pad so that you can enter or modify schedules or address book data on your computer and export data to your CLIÉ handheld. Starting Palm™ Desktop for CLIÉ 1Double-click (Palm De sktop for CLIÉ) on the Windows desktop. You can also click [Start], select [Programs] ([All Programs] for Windows XP) - [Sony Handheld], and click [Palm Desktop for CLIÉ]. Palm™ Desktop for CLIÉ starts. Tip To quit Palm™ Desktop for CLIÉ Click at the top right of the window or select [Exit] from [File].
