3 Getting Started Front View Front View • Proximity sensors: Detect the presence of objects near the device. • Front camera: Take self-portraits and record videos of yourself. • Power key : Press and hold to turn the device on or off, restart it, or for quick access to Emergency mode. Press to lock or wake up the screen. • Back: Return to the previous screen or close a dialog box, menu, or keyboard. • Home key: Return to the Home screen. • Recent: Tap to display recent apps. • Volume key: Adjust the volume of your device’s sounds and audio playback. • Earpiece: Listen to a call.

6 Getting StartedAssemble Your Device Assemble Your Device This section helps you to assemble your device. Remove the Back Cover Open the back cover to install the SIM card, an optional SD card, and replace the battery. 1. Remo ve the back cover using the slot on the top left of your device. 2. Lift the cover up and to the right of the device. Warning: Do not bend or twist the back cover excessively. Doing so may damage the cover. Install the SIM Card When you subscribe to a cellular network, you are provided with a plug-in SIM card. During activation, your SIM card is loaded with your subscription details, such as your Personal Identification Number (PIN) , available optional services, and other features. Warning: Please be careful when handling the SIM card to avoid damaging it. Keep all SIM cards out of reach of small children. Note : The SIM card slot is located below the micro SD card slot.
7 Getting Started Assemble Your Device ►C arefully slide the SIM card into the SIM card slot. • Make sure that the card’s gold contacts face down into the device and that the card is positioned as shown. Caution: If the SIM card is not inserted correctly, the device cannot detect it. Reorient the SIM card and place it back into the slot if it is not detected. Install a Memory Card You can also install an optional microSD™ or microSDHC™ memory card (not included) to add more memory space to your device. Note : A memory card can be installed at any time. It is not necessary to install it prior to using the device. Note : The micro SD card slot is located above the SIM card slot. ► S lide the memory card into the slot with the gold contacts facing down.
8 Getting Started Assemble Your Device Install the Battery You can install a replacement battery. 1. Inser t the battery into the opening on the back of the device, making sure the connectors align. 2. Gently press down to secure the battery. Replace the Back Cover Close the back cover before using the device. 1. P lace the back cover onto the back of the device and press down. 2. Press along the edge of the back cover until you have a secure seal.
9 Getting Started Assemble Your Device Charge the Battery Your device is powered by a rechargeable, standard Li-Ion battery. A USB charger (charging head and USB cable) is included with the device for charging the battery from any standard outlet. The battery comes partially charged. A fully discharged battery requires up to four hours of charge time. You can use the device while charging. Note: It is recommended you fully charge the battery before using your device for the first time. Caution: Use only charging devices and batteries approved by Samsung. Samsung accessories are designed for your device to maximize battery life. Using other accessories may invalidate your warranty and may cause damage. 1. Inser t the USB cable into the USB charger/ Accessory port. 2. Connect the USB cable to the charging head, and then plug the charging head into a standard outlet. 3. U nplug the charging head from the outlet and remove the USB cable from the device when charging is complete.
10 Getting Started Assemble Your Device When to Charge the Battery When the battery is low and only a few minutes of operation remain, the device sounds a warning tone at regular intervals. In this condition, your device conserves its remaining battery power by dimming the screen. When the battery level becomes too low, the device automatically turns off. For a quick check of your battery level: ►V iew the battery charge indicator located in the top right corner of your device’s display. A solid color ( ) indicates a full charge. You can also choose to display a percentage value. Viewing a percentage value can provide a better idea of the remaining charge on the battery. For more information, see “Battery” on page 138 .
11 Getting StartedSet Up Your Device Set Up Your Device Turn Your Device On or Off The instructions below explain how to turn your device on or off. Turn the Device On To turn the device on: ► Pr ess and hold the Power key until the device turns on. Turn the Device Off To turn the device off: 1. Pr ess and hold the Power key until the Device options menu is displayed. 2. T ap Power off, and confirm if prompted. Reset the Device If your device stops responding to taps or finger gestures and you are unable to turn it off, you can reset your device. ►Pr ess and hold the Power key and the Volume down key at the same time for more than seven seconds. Initial Set Up The first time you turn your device on, a Welcome screen is displayed. It guides you through the basics of setting up your device. Follow the prompts to choose a default language, connect to a Wi-Fi ® network, set up accounts, choose location services, learn about your device’s features, and more.
