    Character entry
    The dial keys are used to enter characters and numbers. Each dial key has multiple 
    characters assigned to it. The characters that can be entered depend on the 
    character entry mode (page 41).
    – Use the joystick to move the cursor.
    – Press dial keys to enter characters and numbers.
    –Press ^ to erase the character or number highlighted by the cursor. Press and 
    hold ^ to erase all characters or numbers.
    –Press {*} to switch between uppercase and lowercase.
    – When entering another character located on the same dial key, operation will differ 
    depending on the display language you select.
    English
    Push the joystick right to move the cursor to the next space, then press the 
    appropriate dial key.
    Arabic/Persian
    Push the joystick left to move the cursor to the next space, then press the 
    appropriate dial key.
    Character entry modes
    The available character entry modes are Alphabet (ABC), Numeric (0-9), 
    Arabic/Persian ( ) and Extended (G). When in these entry modes except 
    Numeric, you can select which character is entered by pressing a dial key repeatedly.
    When the unit displays the character entry screen:
    / (right soft key) i {V}/{^}: Select a character entry mode. i M
    Note:
    LWhen you select Arabic or Persian as the display language, numbers in the 
    character table are displayed in Arabic or Persian.

    LWhen you select Arabic as the display language, Arabic character table is 
    available.

    Error messages
    If the unit detects a problem, one of the following messages is shown on the display.
    *1 KX-TG8421
    Display messageCause/solution
    Check Phone LineLThe supplied telephone line cord has not been 
    connected yet or not connected properly. Check the 
    connections (page 8).
    Error
    *1LRecording was too short. Try again.
    Memory FullLThe phonebook memory is full. Erase unnecessary 
    entries (page 19).
    LMessage memory is full. Erase unnecessary 
    messages (page 34, 35).
    *1
    LThe call barred list memory is full. Erase unnecessary 
    entries (page 27).
    LThe maximum number of base units (4) is already 
    registered to the handset. Cancel unused base unit 
    registrations from the handset (page 29).
    No link. 
    Reconnect AC 
    adaptor.LThe handset has lost communication with the base 
    unit. Move closer to the base unit and try again.
    LUnplug the base unit’s AC adaptor to reset the unit. 
    Reconnect the adaptor and try again.
    LThe handset’s registration may have been cancelled. 
    Re-register the handset (page 28).
    Use rechargeable 
    battery.LA wrong type of battery such as Alkaline or 
    Manganese was inserted. Use only the rechargeable 
    Ni-MH batteries noted on page 4, 6.
    You must first 
    subscribe to 
    Caller ID.LYou must subscribe to a Caller ID service. Once you 
    receive caller information after subscribing to a Caller 
    ID service, this message will not be displayed.

    Troubleshooting
    If you still have difficulties after following the instructions in this section, disconnect 
    the base unit’s AC adaptor and turn off the handset, then reconnect the base unit’s 
    AC adaptor and turn on the handset.
    General use
    ProblemCause/solution
    The handset does not 
    automatically turn on after 
    installing/replacing batteries.LThe battery is empty or too weak to turn on the 
    power. Place the handset on the base unit, 
    and let it charge. 
    The unit does not work.LMake sure the batteries are installed correctly 
    (page 8).
    LFully charge the batteries (page 8).
    LCheck the connections (page 8).
    LUnplug the base unit’s AC adaptor to reset the 
    unit and turn off the handset. Reconnect the 
    adaptor, turn on the handset and try again.
    LThe handset has not been registered to the 
    base unit. Register the handset (page 28).
    The handset display is blank or 
    dark.LThe handset is in screen saver mode (page 
    13). Activate the handset display again by: 
    – pushing the joystick left {} 
    when on a call.
    – pressing {ih} at all other times.
    L“LCD in charging” is set to “Off” while on 
    charge. Change the setting (page 22).
    LThe handset is not turned on. Turn the power 
    on (page 13).

    Programmable settingsI cannot hear a dial tone.LMake sure that you are using the supplied 
    telephone line cord. Your old telephone line 
    cord may have a different wiring configuration.
    LThe base unit’s AC adaptor or telephone line 
    cord is not connected. Check the connections.
    LIf you are using a splitter to connect the unit, 
    remove the splitter and connect the unit to the 
    wall jack directly. If the unit operates properly, 
    check the splitter.
    LDisconnect the base unit from the telephone 
    line and connect the line to a known working 
    telephone. If the working telephone operates 
    properly, contact our service personnel to 
    have the unit repaired. If the working 
    telephone does not operate properly, contact 
    your service provider/telephone company.
    I do not know how to erase y 
    (Missed call) from the display.LThere are unviewed missed calls remaining. 
    View them and erase y in the following way.

    2Push the joystick down to search from the 
    most recent call, or push the joystick up to 
    search from the oldest call.
    I cannot use “Copy” or “Copy 
    All” when I press 1 while 
    displaying phonebook entries.LThese items are phonebook copy features 
    between the handsets. Although the handset 
    shows these items, copy features are not 
    available for this model.
    ProblemCause/solution
    I have changed the display 
    language to a language I 
    cannot read.LChange the display language.

    Battery recharge
    Making/answering callsI cannot register a handset to a 
    base unit.LThe maximum number of base units (4) is 
    already registered to the handset. Cancel 
    unused base unit registrations from the 
    handset (page 29).
    LYou entered the wrong PIN. If you forget your 
    PIN, contact your nearest Panasonic service 
    centre.
    LPlace the handset and the base unit away 
    from other electrical appliances.
    ProblemCause/solution
    The handset beeps and/or ) 
    flashes.LBattery charge is low. Fully charge the 
    batteries (page 8).
    I fully charged the batteries, but 
    ) still flashes.LClean the charge contacts and charge again 
    (page 9).
    LIt is time to replace the batteries (page 8).
    I fully charged the batteries, but 
    the operating time seems to be 
    shorter.LClean the battery ends (S, T) and the 
    charge contacts with a dry cloth and charge 
    again.

    w is flashing.LThe handset is too far from the base unit. 
    Move closer.
    LThe base unit’s AC adaptor is not properly 
    connected. Reconnect AC adaptor to the 
    base unit.
    LYou are using the handset or base unit in an 
    area with high electrical interference. Re-

    away from sources of interference.
    LThe handset is not registered to the base unit. 
    Register it (page 28).

    and out.LYou are using the handset or base unit in an 
    area with high electrical interference. Re-
    position the base unit and use the handset 
    away from sources of interference.
    LMove closer to the base unit.
    LIf you use a DSL/ADSL service, we 
    recommend connecting a DSL/ADSL filter 
    between the base unit and the telephone line 
    jack. Contact your DSL/ADSL provider for 
    details.
    The handset does not ring.LThe ringer volume is turned off. Adjust ringer 
    volume (page 21).
    LNight mode is turned on. Turn it off (page 24).
    The base unit does not ring.
    *1LThe ringer volume is turned off. Adjust ringer 
    volume (page 22).
    I cannot make a call.LThe dialling mode may be set incorrectly. 
    Change the setting (page 14).
    LThe handset is too far from the base unit. 
    Move closer and try again.
    LAnother unit is in use. Wait and try again later.
    LAnswering system is being used.

    LYou dialled a call restricted number (page 26).
    LThe key lock feature is turned on. Turn it off

    ProblemCause/solution
    Caller information is not 
    displayed.LYou must subscribe to a Caller ID service. 
    Contact your service provider/telephone 
    company for details.
    LIf your unit is connected to any additional 
    telephone equipment, remove and plug the 
    unit directly into the wall jack.
    LIf you use a DSL/ADSL service, we 
    recommend connecting a DSL/ADSL filter 
    between the base unit and the telephone line 
    jack. Contact your DSL/ADSL provider for 
    details.
    LOther telephone equipment may be interfering 
    with this unit. Disconnect the other equipment 
    and try again.
    Caller information is slow to 
    display.LDepending on your service provider/
    telephone company, the unit may display the 
    caller’s information at the 2nd ring or later.
    LMove closer to the base unit.
    Time on the unit has shifted.LIncorrect time information from incoming 
    Caller ID changes the time. Set the time 
    adjustment to “Manual” (off) (page 21).
    ProblemCause/solution
    The unit does not record new 
    messages.LThe answering system is turned off. Turn it on 
    (page 32).
    LThe message memory is full. Erase 
    unnecessary messages (page 34).
    LThe recording time is set to “Greeting 
    Only”. Change the setting (page 37).
    LIf your own greeting message is not recorded 
    properly, callers are unable to leave a 
    message. Record your own greeting message 
    again (page 33).
    LIf you subscribe to a voice mail service, 
    messages are recorded by your service 
    provider/telephone company, not your 
    telephone. Change the unit’s number of rings 
    setting or contact your service provider/
    telephone company (page 37).

    Liquid damage
    Caution:
    LTo avoid permanent damage, do not use a microwave oven to speed up the drying 
    process. My own greeting message 
    cannot be properly heard.LRecord your own greeting message again 
    (page 33).
    I cannot operate the answering 
    system.LSomeone is using the unit. Wait for the other 
    user to finish.
    LA caller is leaving a message. Wait for the 
    caller to finish.
    LThe handset is too far from the base unit. 
    Move closer.
    I cannot operate the answering 
    system remotely.LYou are entering the wrong remote access 
    code. If you have forgotten your remote 
    access code, enter the remote access code 
    setting to check your current code (page 35).
    LPress each key firmly.
    LThe answering system is turned off. Turn it on 
    (page 36).
    LYou are using a rotary/pulse telephone. Try 
    again using a touch-tone phone.
    While recording a greeting 
    message or listening to 
    messages, the unit rings and 
    the operation stops.LA call is being received. Answer the call and 
    try again later.
    ProblemCause/solution
    Liquid or other form of moisture 
    has entered the handset/base 
    unit.LDisconnect the AC adaptor and telephone line 
    cord from the base unit. Remove the batteries 
    from the handset and leave to dry for at least 
    3 days. After the handset/base unit are 
    completely dry, reconnect the AC adaptor and 
    telephone line cord. Insert the batteries and 
    charge fully before use. If the unit does not 
    work properly, contact your nearest 
    Panasonic service centre.
