28 8Select the highlighted item. Press J to select the highlighted item. To exit without making a selection, press the G button. Note the following points: • Menu items that are displayed in gray are not currently available. • While pressing 2 or the center of the multi selector generally has the same effect as pressing J, there are some cases in which selection can only be made by pressing J. • To exit the menus and return to shooting mode, press the shutter-release button halfway. 29 Basic Photography and Playback 1Ready the Camera. When framing photographs in the viewfinder, hold the handgrip in your right hand and cradle the camera body or lens with your left. When framing photographs in portrait (tall) orientation, hold the camera as shown at right. 2Frame the photograph. At default settings, the camera will focus on the subject in the center focus point. Frame a photograph in the viewfinder with the main subject in the center focus point. “Point-and-Shoot” Photography Focus point
30 3Press the shutter-release button halfway. Press the shutter-release button halfway to focus (if the subject is poorly lit, the AF-assist illuminator may light). The in-focus indicator ( I) will appear in the viewfinder when the focus operation is complete. 4Shoot. Smoothly press the shutter-release-button the rest of the way down to take the photograph. The memory card access lamp will light and the photograph will be displayed in the monitor for a few seconds. Do not eject the memory card or remove or disconnect the power source until the lamp has gone out and recording is complete. Viewfinder displayDescription I Subject in focus. 31 1Press the K button. A photograph will be displayed in the monitor. The memory card containing the picture currently displayed is shown by an icon. 2View additional pictures. Additional pictures can be displayed by pressing 4 or 2. To view additional information on the current photograph, press 1 and 3 (0 238). To end playback and return to shooting mode, press the shutter-release button halfway. Basic Playback K button
32 AImage Review When On is selected for Image review in the playback menu ( 0287), photographs are automatically displayed in the monitor for a few seconds after shooting. ASee Also See page 237 for information on choosing a memory card slot.
33 Deleting Unwanted Photographs To delete the photograph currently displayed in the monitor, press the O (Q ) button. Note that photographs can not be recovered on ce deleted. 1Display the photograph. Display the photograph you wish to delete as described on the preceding page. The location of the current image is shown by an icon at the bottom left corner of the display. 2Delete the photograph. Press the O (Q ) button. A confirmation dialog will be displayed; press the O (Q ) button again to delete the image and return to playback. To exit without deleting the picture, press K. ADelete To delete multiple images or to select the memory card from which images will be deleted, use the Delete option in the playback menu ( 0 252). O (Q ) button
34 AThe Standby Timer (Viewfinder Photography) The viewfinder indicator display and control panel shutter speed and aperture di splay will turn off if no operations are performed for about six seconds, reducing the drain on the battery. Press the shutter-release button halfway to reactivate the display. The length of time before the standby timer expires automatically can be selected using Custom Setting c2 ( Standby timer, 0 319). 35 Live View Photography Follow the steps below to take photographs in live view. 1Rotate the live view selector to C (live view photography). 2Press the a button. The mirror will be raised and the view through the lens will be displayed in the camera monitor. The subject will no longer be visible in the viewfinder. 3Position the focus point. 36 4Focus. Press the shutter-release button halfway to focus. The focus point will flash green while the camera focuses. If the camera is able to focus, the focus point will be displayed in green; if the camera is unable to focus, the focus point will flash red (note that pictures can be taken even when the focus point flashes red; check focus in the monitor before shooting). Exposure can be locked by pressing the AAE-L/AF-L button ( 0128); focus locks while the shutter-release button is pressed halfway. AExposure Preview During live view photography, you can press J to preview the effects of shutter speed, aperture, and ISO sensitivity on exposure. Exposure can be adjusted by ±5 EV ( 0130), although only values between –3 and +3 EV are reflected in the preview display. Note that the preview may not accurately reflect the final results when flash lighting is used, Active D-Lighting (0182), High Dynamic Range (HDR; 0184), or bracketing is in effect, A (auto) is selected for the Picture Control Contrast parameter ( 0 174), or a value other than 0 is selected for Clarity (0 174), or p is selected for shutter speed. If the subject is very bright or very dark, the exposure indicators will flash to warn that the preview may not accurately reflect exposure. Exposure preview is not available when A or & is selected for shutter speed. AAE-L/AF-L button
