167 Managing Presets ❚❚Copying White Balance from a Photograph Follow the steps below to copy a value for white balance from an existing photograph to a selected preset. 1Select Preset manual . Select White balance in the shooting menu, then highlight Preset manual and press 2. 2Select a destination. Highlight the destination preset (d-1 to d-6) and press the center of the multi selector. 3Choose Select image . Highlight Select image and press 2. 4Highlight a source image. Highlight the source image.
168 5Copy white balance. Press J to copy the white balance value for the highlighted photograph to the selected preset. If the highlighted photograph has a comment ( 0375), the comment will be copied to the comment for the selected preset. AChoosing a Source Image To view the image highlighted in Step 4 full frame, press and hold the X button. X button To view images in other locations, press W. 169 AChoosing a White Balance Preset Press 1 to highlight the current white balance preset (d-1 – d-6) and press 2 to select another preset. AFine-Tuning Preset Manual White Balance The selected preset can be fine-tuned by selecting Fine -tune and adjusting white balance as described on page 151. AEdit Comment To enter a descriptive comment of up to 36 characters for the current white- balance preset, select Edit comment in the preset manual white balance menu and enter a comment as described on page 178. AProtect To protect the current white-balance preset, select Protect in the preset manual white balance menu, then highlight On and press J. Protected presets can not be modified and the Fine - tune and Edit comment options can not be used.
170 Image Enhancement Selecting a Picture Control Choose a Picture Control according to the subject or type of scene. Choose for photographs that will later be processed or retouched. SVivid Pictures are enhanced for a vivid, photoprint effect. Choose for photographs that emphasize primary colors. TMonochrome Take monochrome photographs. oPor traitProcess portraits for skin with natural texture and a rounded feel. pLandscape Produces vibrant landscapes and cityscapes. qFlatDetails are preserved over a wide tone range, from highlights to shadows. Choose for photographs that will later be extensively processed or retouched.

172 ACustom Picture Controls Custom Picture Controls are created through modifications to existing Picture Controls using the Manage Picture Control option in the shooting menu ( 0177). Custom Picture Controls can be saved to a memory card for sharing among other cameras of the same model and compatible software ( 0180). AThe Picture Control Indicator The current Picture Control is shown in the information display when the R button is pressed. AThe Shooting Menu Picture Controls can also be selected using the Set Picture Control option in the shooting menu ( 0290). Picture Control indicator
173 Modifying Picture Controls Existing preset or custom Picture Controls (0177) can be modified to suit the scene or the user’s creative intent. Choose a balanced combination of settings using Quick adjust, or make manual adjustments to individual settings. 1Select a Picture Control. Highlight the desired Picture Control in the Picture Control list ( 0170) and press 2. 2Adjust settings. Press 1 or 3 to highlight the desired setting and press 4 or 2 to choose a value in increments of 1, or rotate the sub-command dial to choose a value in increments of 0.25 ( 0174). Repeat this step until all settings have been adjusted, or select a pres et combination of settings by using the multi selector to choose Quick adjust. Default settings can be restored by pressing the O (Q ) button. 3Press J. AModifications to Original Picture Controls Picture Controls that have been modified from default settings are indicated by an asterisk (“ U”) in the Set Picture Control menu.
174 ❚❚Picture Control Settings OptionDescription Quick adjust Mute or heighten the effect of the selected Picture Control (note that this resets all manual adjustments). Not available with Neutral, Monochrome , Flat , or custom Picture Controls ( 0177). Manual adjustments (all Picture Controls) Sharpening Control the sharpness of outlines. Select A to adjust sharpening automatically according to the type of scene. Clarity Adjust clarity manually or select A to let the camera adjust clarity automatically. Depending on the scene, shadows may appear around bright objects or halos may appear around dark objects at some settings. Clarity is not applied to movies. Contrast Adjust contrast manually or select A to let the camera adjust contrast automatically. Brightness Raise or lower brightness without loss of detail in highlights or shadows. Manual adjustments (non-monochrome only) Saturation Control the vividness of colors. Select A to adjust saturation automatically according to the type of scene. Hue Adjust hue. Manual adjustments (monochrome only)Filter effects Simulate the effect of color filters on monochrome photographs ( 0175). Toning Choose the tint used in monochrome photographs ( 0 176).
175 D“A” (Auto) Results for auto sharpening, clarity, contrast, and saturation vary with exposure and the position of the subject in the frame. Use a type G, E, or D lens for best results. ASwitching Between Manual and Auto Press the X button to switch back and forth between manual and auto ( A) settings for sharpening, clarity, contrast, and saturation. APrevious Settings The h indicator under the value display in the Picture Control setting menu indicates the previous value for the setting. Use this as a reference when adjusting settings. AFilter Effects (Monochrome Only) The options in this menu simulate the effect of color filters on monochrome photographs. The following filter effects are available: OptionDescription YYe l l o wEnhances contrast. Can be used to tone down the brightness of the sky in landscape photographs. Orange produces more contrast than yellow, red more contrast than orange.OOrange RRed GGreenSoftens skin tones. Can be used for portraits. Note that the effects achieved with Filter effects are more pronounced than those produce d by physical glass filters.
176 AToning (Monochrome Only) Pressing 3 when Toning is selected displays saturation options. Press 4 or 2 to adjust saturation in increments of 1, or rotate the sub-command dial to choose a value in increments of 0.25. Saturation control is not available when B&W (black- and-white) is selected. ACustom Picture Controls The options available with custom Picture Controls are the same as those on which the custom Picture Control was based.
