The BM-12 Monitor Cover
A clear plastic cover is provided with the 
camera to keep the monitor clean and 
protect it when the camera is not in use.
 
To attach the cover, insert the projection 
on the top of the cover into the 
matching indentation above the camera 
monitor (q) and press the bottom of 
the cover until it clicks into place ( w).
To remove the cover, hold the camera 
firmly and pull the bottom of the cover 
gently outwards as shown at right.

First Steps
Follow the seven steps below to ready the camera for use.
1Attach the strap.
Attach the strap as shown.
 Repeat for the second eyelet.

Read and follow the warnings and cautions on pages xiii–xvi and 452–457 
of this manual .

2Charge the battery.
Insert the battery and plug the charger in (depending on the 
country or region, the charger comes with either an AC wall 
adapter or a power cable).
 An exhausted battery will fully 
charge in about two hours and 35 minutes.
• AC wall adapter : Insert the AC wall adapter into the charger AC 
inlet ( q).
 Slide the AC wall adapter latch as shown ( w) and 
rotate the adapter 90 ° to fix it in place ( e).
 Insert the 
battery and plug the charger in.

3Insert the battery and a memory card.
Before inserting or removing the battery or memory cards, 
confirm that power switch is in the OFF position.
 Insert the 
battery in the orientation show n, using the battery to keep 
the orange battery latch pressed to one side.
 The latch locks 
the battery in place when the battery is fully inserted.
Memory cards are inserted as shown below.

4Attach a lens.
Be careful to prevent dust from entering the camera when 
the lens or body cap is removed.
 The lens generally used in 
this manual for illustrative pu rposes is an AF-S NIKKOR 24–
120mm f/4G ED VR.
Be sure to remove the lens cap before taking pictures.

5Turn the camera on.
Turn the camera on.
 The 
control panel will light.
ALCD Illuminators
Rotating the power switch toward D activates the 
standby timer and control panel  backlight (LCD illuminator), 
allowing the display to be read in the dark.
 After the power 
switch is released, the illuminators will remain lit for six 
seconds while the standby timer is active or until the 
shutter is released or the power switch is rotated toward 
D again.
