To c o n t i n u e shooting, create a folder with a number less th an 999, or select an existing folder with a number less than 999 and less than 999 images. 216 U ❚❚Selecting Folders from a List 1Choose Select folder from list . Highlight Select folder from list and press 2. 2Highlight a folder. Press 1 or 3 to highlight a folder. 3Select the highlighted folder. Press J to select the highlighted folder and return to the shooting menu. Subsequent photographs will be stored in the selected folder. Photographs are saved using file names consisting of “DSC_” or, in the case of images that use the Adobe RGB color space, “_DSC”, followed by a four-digit number and a three-letter extension (e.g ., “DSC_0001.JPG”). The File naming option is used to select three letters to replace the “DSC” portion of the file name. For information on editing file names, see page 135. File NamingG button ➜Cshooting menu AExtensions The following extensions are used: “.NEF” fo r NEF (RAW ) images, “.JPG” for JPEG images, “.MOV” for movies, and “.NDF” for dust off reference data. In each pair of photographs recorded at image-quality settings of NEF (RAW )+JPEG, the NEF and JPEG images have the same file names but different extensions.
217 U Select On to reduce barrel distortion when shooting with wide- angle lenses and to reduce pin-cushion distortion when shooting with long lenses (note that the edges of the area visible in the viewfinder may be cropped out of the final photograph, and that the time needed to process photographs before recording begins may increase). This option does not apply to movies and is available only with type G, E, and D lenses (PC, fisheye, and certain other lenses excluded); results are not guaranteed with other lenses. Before using auto distortion control with DX lenses, select On for Auto DX crop or choose an image area of DX (24×16) 1.5× (0 90); selecting other options may result in heavily cropped photographs or in photographs with severe peripheral distortion. The color space determines the gamut of colors available for color reproduction. Choose sRGB for general-purpose printing and display; Adobe RGB, with its broader gamut of colors, is more suited to shots destined for professional publication and commercial printing. Auto Distortion ControlG button ➜Cshooting menu ARetouch: Distortion Control For information on creating copies of existing photographs with reduced barrel and pin- cushion distortion, see page 274. Color SpaceG button ➜Cshooting menu AAdobe RGB For accurate color reproduction, Adobe RGB images require applications, displays, and printers that support color management. AColor Space ViewNX 2 (supplied) and Capture NX 2 (available separately) automatically select the correct color space when opening photographs created with this camera. Results can not be guaranteed with third-party software. AMovies sRGB is recommended for movies.
218 U “Vignetting” is a drop in brightness at the edges of a photograph. Vignette control reduces vignetting for type G, E, and D lenses (DX and PC lenses excluded). Its effects vary from lens to lens and are most noticeable at maximum aperture. Choose from High , Normal , Low , and Off. If On is selected, photographs taken at shutter speeds slower than 1 s will be processed to reduce noise (bright spots, randomly-spaced bright pixels, or fog). The time required for processing roughly double s; during processing, “lm” will flash in the shutter speed/aperture displays and pictures can not be taken (if the camera is turned off before processing is complete, the picture will be saved but noise reduction will not be performed). In continuous release mode, frame rates will slow and while phot ographs are being processed, the capacity of the memory buffer will drop. Long exposure noise reduction is not available during movie recording. Photographs taken at high ISO sensitivitie s can be processed to reduce “noise.” Vignette ControlG button ➜Cshooting menu AVignette Control Depending on the scene, shooting conditions, and type of lens, JPEG images may exhibit noise (fog) or variations in peripheral bright ness, while custom Picture Controls and preset Picture Controls that have been modified from default settings may not produce the desired effect. Take test shots and view the results in the monitor. Vignette control does not apply to movies ( 057), multiple exposures ( 0160), or DX-format images ( 089). Long Exposure NR (Long Exposure Noise Reduction)G button ➜Cshooting menu High ISO NRG button ➜Cshooting menu OptionDescription High Reduce noise (randomly-spaced bright pi xels, lines, or fog), particularly in photographs taken at high ISO sensitivities. Choose the amount of noise reduction performed from High, Normal , and Low. Normal Low Off Noise reduction is only performed at ISO sensitivities of ISO 2500 and higher. The amount of noise reduction is less than the amount performed when Low is selected for High ISO NR .

221 U Select Ye s to restore Custom Settings to their default values ( 0 313). When AF-C is selected for viewfinder photography ( 097), this option controls whether photographs can be taken whenever the shutter-release button is pressed ( release priority ) or only when the camera is in focus ( focus priority). Regardless of the option selected, focus will not lock when AF-C is selected for autofocus mode. The camera will continue to adjust focus until the shutter is released. When AF-S is selected for viewfinder photography ( 097), this option controls whether photographs can be taken only when the camera is in focus ( focus priority) or whenever the shutter-release button is pressed ( release priority). Regardless of the option selected, if the in-focus indicator ( I) is displayed when AF-S is selected for autofocus mode, focus will lock while the shutter-release button is pressed halfway. This prevents the camera from refocusing when the su bject is briefly obscured by objects passing through the frame.
