Update the Firmware of the Modem The modem firmware is stored in flash memory. Y ou can check to see if new firmware is available and update the modem to the new firmware. You can also visit the NETGEAR support website, download the firmware manually, and update the modem to the new fir mware. Check for New Firmware and Update the Modem For you to check for new firmware, the modem must be connected to the Internet. T o check for new firmware and update your modem: 1. Launch a web browser from a computer that is connected to the network. 2. Enter http://www.routerlogin.net. A login window opens. 3. Enter the modem user name and password. The user name is admin. The default password is password. The user name and password are case-sensitive. The BASIC Home page displays. 4. Select ADVANCED > Administration > Firmware Upgrade. The Firmware Upgrade page displays. 5. Click the Check button. The modem detects new firmware if any is available and displays a message asking if you want to do wnload and install it. 6. To download and install the new firmware, click the Yes button. The modem locates the firmware, downloads it, and begins the update. W ARNING: To avoid the risk of corrupting the firmware, do not interrupt the update. For example, do not close the browser, click a link, or load a new page. Do not turn off the modem. Wait until the modem finishes restarting and the Power LED turns solid green. A progress bar shows the progress of the firmware upload process. The firmware upload process takes several minutes. Restore the Settings If you backed up the configuration file, you can restore the configuration from this file. To restore configuration settings that you backed up: 1. Launch a web browser from a computer that is connected to the network. 2. Enter http://www.routerlogin.net. A login window opens. 3. Enter the modem user name and password. The user name is admin. The default password is password. The user name and password are case-sensitive. The BASIC Home page displays. 4. Select ADVANCED > Administration > Backup Settings. The Bac kup Settings page displays. 5. Click the Browse button and navigate to and select the saved configuration file. The name of the bac kup file from which you can restore the configuration is NETGEAR_DM200.cfg 6. Clic k the Restore button. The configur ation is uploaded to the modem. When the restoration is complete, the modem reboots. This process tak es about two minutes. WARNING: To avoid the risk of corrupting the firmware, do not interrupt the restoration. For example, do not close the browser, click a link, or load a new page. Do not turn off the modem. Wait until the modem finishes restarting and the Power LED turns solid green. Change the admin Password If you used the NETGEAR installation assistant to set up the modem, you had to change the default password that you use to log in to the modem to a more secure password. This is the password that you use to log in to the modem with the user name admin. If you did not use the NETGEAR installation assistant, we recommend that y ou do change the default password. If you already changed the password, you change it again. The ideal password contains no dictionary words from any language and contains uppercase and lowercase letters, numbers, and symbols. It can be up to 30 characters. To change the password for the user name admin: 1. Launch a web browser from a computer that is connected to the network. 2. Enter http://www.routerlogin.net. 3. Enter the modem user name and password. The user name is admin. The default password is password. The user name and password are case-sensitive. The BASIC Home page displays. 4. Select ADVANCED > Administration > Set Password. 5. Enter the old password. 6. Enter the new password twice. 7. Click the Apply button. Your settings are saved. Set Up Password Recovery If you used the NETGEAR installation assistant to set up the modem, you had to enable password recovery. If you did not use the NETGEAR installation assistant or password recovery is not enabled for another reason, we recommend that you do enable password recovery. Then you can recover the password if it is forgotten. This recovery process is supported in Internet Explorer, Firefox, and Chrome browsers, but not in the Safari browser. To set up password recovery: 1. Launch a web browser from a computer that is connected to the network. 2. Enter http://www.routerlogin.net. A login window opens. 3. Enter the modem user name and password. The user name is admin. The default password is password. The user name and password are case-sensitive. The BASIC Home page displays. 4. Select ADVANCED > Administration > Set Password. The Set Password page displays. 5. Select the Enable Password Recovery check box. 6. Select two security questions and provide answers to them. 7. Recover the admin Password If you used the NETGEAR installation assistant to set up the modem, you had to enable password recovery. (For information about setting up password recovery, see Set Up Password Recovery on page 75.) The f ollowing procedure works only if you did set up password recovery. The recovery process is supported in Internet Explorer, Firefox, and Chrome browsers, but not in the Safari browser. To recover your password: 1. Launch a web browser from a computer that is connected to the network. 2. Enter www.routerlogin.net. A login windo w opens. 3. Click the Cancel button. If pass word recovery is enabled, you are prompted to enter the serial number of the modem. The serial number is on the product label of the modem. 4. Enter the ser ial number of the modem . 5. Click the Continue button. A page displa ys requesting the answers to your security questions. 6. Enter the saved answers to your security questions. 7. Click the Continue button. A page displays your recovered password. 8. Click the Login again button. A login windo w opens. 9. With your recovered password, log in to the modem. Return the Modem to Its F actory Default Settings Under some circumstances (for example, if you lost track of the changes that you made to the modem settings or y ou move the modem to a different network), you might want to erase the configuration and reset the modem to factory default settings. If y ou do not know the current IP address of the modem, first try to use an IP scanner application to detect the IP address bef ore you reset the modem to factory default settings. To reset the modem to factory default settings, you can use either the Reset button on the back of the modem or the Erase function. However, if you cannot find the IP address or lost the password to access the modem, you must use the Reset button. After you reset the modem to factory default settings, the user name is admin, the password is password, the LAN IP address is 192.168.5.1 (which is the same as www.routerlogin.net), the DHCP server is enabled, and the device mode is Router (Modem + Router). Use the Reset Button CAUTION: This process erases all settings that you configured in the modem. To reset the modem to factory default settings: 1. On the back of the modem, locate the recessed Reset button above the yellow LAN port. 2. Using a straightened paper clip, press and hold the Reset button for at least five seconds. 3. Release the Reset button. The Power LED starts blinking amber and the configuration is reset to factory default settings. When the reset is complete, the modem reboots. This process takes about two minutes. W ARNING: To avoid the risk of corrupting the firmware, do not interrupt the reset. For example, if you are connected to the modem’s web page, do not close the br owser, click a link, or load a new page. Do not turn off the modem. The information onscreen uses the following color coding: • A green flag indicates that Internet connection is fine and no problems exist. • A red X indicates that configuration problems exist for Internet connection or the connection is down. • An amber exclamation mark indicates that the Internet port is configured but cannot get an Internet connection (for example, because the cable is disconnected) or that another situation that requires your attention occurred. The following table describes the fields of the two panes on the ADVANCED Home page. Description Field Router Information The modem model. Hardware Version The version of the modem firmware. If you upgrade the firmware on the modem, the v ersion changes. Firmware Version The version of the modem language for its web pages. The selection from the Device Mode menu on the Device Mode page is Router (Modem + Router). This is the default mode. • Modem. The selection from the Device Mode menu on the Device Mode page is Modem (Modem only). Oper ation Mode LAN Port The settings of the LAN port. DHCP Server Internet Port The settings of Internet port. This address is the unique physical address that is assigned to the Internet port. MAC Address The IP addresses that the Internet interface uses. If the field does not display an address or displays 0.0.0.0 as the address, the modem did not obtain a connection for the interface. IP Address The type of connection that the Internet interface uses. A connection can be a PPPoE, PPPoA, or DHCP connection or a fixed IP address connection.
