    							Introduction
    Issue 3 July 1997 1-3
The Switch Module emulates your telephone and the Remote
Module emulates your PBX. Each module features a V.32terbo
internal modem for the transmission of all signals between the two
modules. With the use of Lucent Technologies’ DEFINITY
Extender system, the features and capabilities of your on-premise
telephones are extended to those off-premise.
    ! Security Alert:
Using the Remote Module gains access to the features of
the DEFINITY ECS, including access to WATS lines, FX
lines, etc., which are subject to toll fraud. Guard passwords
    carefully!
The Switch Module comes in two versions: the single standalone
module and the Rack-Mount Module that fits into the Multi-Mount
Extender Rack. Each Multi-Mount Rack can hold up to 12 Rack-
Mount Modules. Each Rack-Mount Module functions exactly like
    the Standalone Switch Module.
    NOTE:
In this guide, the standalone module is called the “Standalone
Switch Module,” and the module inserted into the Multi-Mount Rack
is called the “DEFINITY Extender Rack-Mount Module” or simply
the “Rack-Mount Module.” When information is the same for both
the Standalone and Rack-Mount Switch Modules, the term “Switch
    Module” is used.

    Equipment List
Both versions of the Switch Module come with most of the
necessary equipment. However, some additional items are

Your Standalone Switch Module package should include:
nOne Switch Module (identified on the top of the unit)
    nOne AC adapter
    n25-ft. D2R line cord
n7-ft. D8W cord to connect to the DEFINITY ECS

    Equipment
    NOTE:
DEFINITY telephones are not supplied with either the Switch
Module or the Remote Module and must be ordered separately.
Contact your Lucent Technologies representative for
information. Remote Modules are also ordered and shipped
separately. For new DEFINITY Extender systems that use
Standalone Switch Modules, you should order at least one
Remote Module to be used in the initial programming of
    passwords.
You must supply the following for installation:
    nDEFINITY ECS two-wire, 16-port TN-2181 circuit pack
nAny additional DEFINITY ECS circuit packs needed (see the
DEFINITY® Communications System Generic 3, Installation for
    Single-Carrier Cabinets
    manual, document #555-230-894,
    comcode #107595423, for further information).
nAn adapter to convert to 120 vac if you are connecting the
Standalone Switch Module or the Multi-Mount Rack to a 240-
    vac outlet.
nPower and central office line suppressor. Lucent Technologies
recommends the 147C AC/CO Line Surge Protector (#8310-
006). Contact your Lucent Technologies representative for
    ordering instructions.
nA 50-pin Amphenol connector of proper length for the Multi-
    Mount Rack
nUp to 12 Rack-Mount Switch Modules for each Multi-Mount
    Rack that has been ordered

nPassword Manager Program diskette (PEC 2174-PSA) if you
    are using Rack-Mount Switch Modules
    NOTE:
Save your packing materials. Even though the Switch Module is a
reliable product, it may be necessary to return it for maintenance.
When returning the module, use the original package.
    Compatibility
    The DEFINITY Extender
     is compatible with the following
commercial two-wire DEFINITY ECS display telephones:
    n8410D
n8410DR—Class B telephone registered for residential use
    n8434D
    NOTE:
The power supply that comes with the DEFINITY Extender
Remote Module cannot produce the power required by the
8434D telephone. An MSP-1 (WP924644) power supply must
be used. Check with your Lucent Technologies representative
    for ordering information.
    n603E Call Master III
n8411D—soon to be available; however, the analog port will not
    function.

    							Introduction
    Issue 3 July 1997 1-7
    NOTE:
Lucent Technologies strongly advises against usihg non-Class B
telephones (8410D, 8434D, and 603E Call Master III) in a non-
commercial environment because this is a violation of FCC
    regulations.
    Options
You can order a wall-mounted metal bracket (PEC 2174-MTG[A])
with a slide-in style sleeve for use with the Standalone Switch
Module or the Remote Module. Rack-Mount Switch Modules may
be ordered for use in the Multi-Mount Rack. Contact your Lucent
    Technologies representative for ordering information.

    Specifications
The DEFINITY Extender system should operate properly with any
standard telephone service. If the Switch and Remote Modules do
not connect at a data rate of 19.2 kbps, contact your local
telephone company for the available central office line options.
Table 1-1 shows the specifications of the standalone DEFINITY
Extender Switch Module. Table 1-2 lists the specifications for the
    DEFINITY Multi-Mount Rack.
    NOTE:
Specifications are subject to change without notice as technological
    or manufacturing changes warrant.

    Considerations
Keep the following in mind when you use the DEFINITY Extender
    system:
nThe DEFINITY Extender system is to be used with a DEFINITY
ECS of Version 3, Release 3 or later.
nNo custom calling features, such as Call Waiting or Call
Forwarding, should be ordered for the line to which you connect
    the Switch Module.
    NOTE:
A Call Waiting tone causes an interruption in the call, and the
DEFINITY Extender system will begin the reconnect sequence.
nSessions can be established only from the Remote Module.
nOnly one Remote Module at a time can be on-line with the
    Switch Module.
nOrder a separate central office (CO) line for each Switch
Module and each Remote Module. Sharing lines or bridging the
line on another station causes problems. For example, picking
up an extension telephone causes the DEFINITY Extender call
    to drop.
nBe sure that the DEFINITY ECS port to which the Switch
Module is connected is programmed correctly for the telephone
    being used.
nAuthorized connections require that a password 8 to 10 digits in
length be entered from the Remote Module. You should always
    use the full 10 digits.
