sure the other end of the USB cable is plugged into a USB port on your computer.
After the cable is connected properly, turn the HP Photosmart off and then on again.
•If you are connecting the HP Photosmart through a USB hub, make sure the hub is
turned on. If the hub is on, try connecting directly to your computer.
    • Check other printers or scanners. You migh t need to disconnect older products from
    your computer.
    • Try connecting the USB cable to another USB port on your computer. After you check
the connections, try restarting your computer. Turn the HP Photosmart off and then
    on again.
    • If necessary, remove the software you installed with the HP Photosmart and then
    install it again.

    Information on paper
The HP Photosmart is designed to work well with most paper types. Test a variety of
paper types before buying a large quantity. Find a paper type that works well and is easy
to purchase. HP Premium papers are designed for the best quality results. In addition,
    follow these tips:
    • Do not use paper that is too thin, that has a slick texture, or that stretches easily. It
can feed incorrectly through the paper path, causing paper jams.
    • Store photo media in its original packaging inside a resealable plastic bag on a flat
surface in a cool, dry place. When you are ready to print, remove only the paper you
plan to use immediately. When you have finished printing, return any unused photo
    paper to the plastic bag.
    • Always hold photo paper by the edges. Fingerprints on photo paper can reduce print
    quality.
    • Do not use paper that is heavily textured. It can cause graphics or text to print
    improperly.

•Do not combine different paper types and paper sizes in the input tray; the entire stack
of paper in the input tray must be the same size and type.
    • Store printed photos under glass or in a st orage book to prevent bleeding over time
from high humidity. Use HP Premium Plus photo paper for maximum performance.
    Information on print cartridges
For best results, use HP print cartridges. Refilled print cartridges might damage the
HP Photosmart. The following tips help maintain HP print cartridges and ensure
    consistent print quality.
    • Keep all print cartridges in the original sealed packages until they are needed.
    • Store print cartridges at room temper ature (15.6°-26.6° C or 60°-78° F).
    • Do not reattach the protective tape once it has been removed from the print cartridge.
Reattaching the plastic tape might damage the print cartridge. Place the print cartridge
in the HP Photosmart immediately after removing the plastic tape. If this is not
possible, store it in a print cartridge protector or airtight plastic container.
    • HP recommends that you do not remove the print cartridges from the HP Photosmart
until you have replacement print cartridges available to install.
    • Turn off the HP Photosmart from the control panel. Do not turn off the device by turning
off a power strip or unplugging the power cord from the HP Photosmart. If you
improperly turn off the HP Photosmart, the print carriage does not return to the correct
position and the print cartridges can dry out.
    • Do not open the print cartridge door unless necessary. This exposes the print
cartridges to air, which reduces the life of the print cartridges.
NOTE: If you leave the print cartridge door open for a long period of time, the
HP Photosmart will recap the print cartridges to protect them from exposure to
    air.
    • Clean the print cartridges when you notice a significant decrease in print quality.
TIP: You might notice a decrease in print quality if the print cartridges have not
been used for a long time.
    • Do not clean the print cartridges unnecessarily. This wastes ink and shortens the life
    of the cartridges.
    • Handle print cartridges carefully. Dropping, jarring, or rough handling during
installation can cause temporary printing problems. If print quality is poor right after
cartridge installation, allow half an hour for the print cartridge to recover.

    print cartridges. Do the following:
    To troubleshoot print cartridges

nozzles or the copper-colored contacts. Ch eck for possible damage to the copper-
    colored contacts or ink nozzles.
Make sure the clear plastic tape has been removed. If it is still covering the ink nozzles,
gently remove the clear plastic tape by using the pink pull tab. Make sure you do not
remove the copper colored tape containing the electrical contacts.

4.If the problem persists, print a self-test re port to determine if there is a problem with
    the print cartridges.
This report provides useful information about your print cartridges, including status
    information.
    5. If the self-test report shows a problem, clean the print cartridges.
    6. If the problem persists, clean the copper-colored contacts of the print cartridges.
    7. If you are still experiencing problems with printing, determine which print cartridge is
experiencing the problem and replace it.

    1. In the HP Solution Center, click Settings, point to Print Settings , and then click
    Printer Toolbox .

printing problem. A sample of the ink test area of the report is shown below.
    3. Make sure the test patterns show a complete grid and the thick color lines are
    complete.
    • If more than a few lines in a pattern are broken, this might indicate a problem with
the nozzles. You might need to clean the print cartridges.
    • If the black line is missing, faded, streaked, or shows lines, this might indicate a problem with the black or photo print cartridge in the right slot.
    • If any of the color lines are missing, faded, streaked, or show lines, this might indicate a problem with the tri-color print cartridge in the left slot.
