Solution:Turn the HP Photosmart off and open the print cartridge door to access the print carriage area. Remove any objects that are blocking the print carriage (including any packing materials), and then turn the HP Photosmart on again. Follow the prompts on the display to continue. Cause: The CD/DVD tray is open. Solution: Close the CD/DVD tray. Carriage jam Cause: The print carriage is blocked. CD/DVD tray misaligned Cause: The CD/DVD holder is loaded incorrectly in the CD/DVD tray. Solution: Remove the CD/DVD holder from the CD/DVD tray and then reinsert the holder. Make sure you push the CD/DVD holder into the tray evenly. Push the holder forward until the lines on the CD/DVD holder line up to the white lines on the CD/DVD tray. Insert CD/DVD holder Cause: The HP Photosmart prompts you to insert the CD/DVD holder for a single CD/DVD print job. Solution: Load the printable disc onto the CD/DVD holder with the printable side up. Lower the CD/DVD tray. Solution: Firmly insert the Two-sided printing accessory into the back of the device until both sides snap into place. NOTE: Do not press the buttons on either side of the accessory when installing it. Use the buttons only when removing the accessory from the device. File messages The following is a list of file-related error messages: • Error reading or writing the file • Unreadable files. Error reading or writing the fileCause: The HP Photosmart software could not open or save the file. Solution: Check to see if you typed the correct folder and file name. Unreadable files. NN files could not be read Cause: Some of the files on the inserted memory card are damaged. Solution: Reinsert the memory card in the HP Photosmart or try transferring the files to your computer using a memory card reader or a USB cable. If you already transferred the files to your computer , try printing those files by using the HP Photosmart Software. The copies might not be damaged. If these solutions do not work, retake the photos with your digital camera as a last resort. Photos not found Cause: Some of the files on the inserted memory card are damaged. Solution: Reinsert the memory card in the HP Photosmart or try transferring the files to your computer using a memory card reader or a USB cable. If you already transferred the files to your computer , try printing those files by using the HP Photosmart Software. The copies might not be damaged. If these solutions do not work, retake the photos with your digital camera as a last resort. Cause: There are no photos found on the memory card. Solution: Take some photos with your digital camera, or if you previously saved photos on your computer, you can print them using the HP Photosmart Software. File not found Cause: There is not enough available memory on your computer to create a print preview file. Solution: Close some applications and try the task again. Invalid file name Cause: The file name you entered is invalid. Solution: Make sure that you are not using any invalid symbols in the file name. NOTE:Although the file name might look correct, it could still include invalid characters. Overwrite the existing file name with a new name. If you already transferred the files to your computer, try printing those files by using the HP Photosmart Software. The copies might not be damaged. If these solutions do not work, retake the photo s with your digital camera as a last resort. Cause:The file system is corrupted. Solution: Check the computer screen for an error message telling you that the images on the memory card are corrupted. If the file system on the card is corrupt, reformat the memory card in your digital camera. CAUTION: Reformatting the memory card will delete any photos stored on the card. If you have previously transferred the photos from your memory card to a computer, try printing the photos from the computer. Otherwise, you will need to retake any photos you might have lost. General user messages The following is a list of messages related to common user errors: • Memory card error • Disconnected • Out of disk space • Card access error • Use only one card at a time • Card is inserted incorrectly • Card is not fully inserted • Card is damaged • CD/DVD is upside down • CD/DVD printing problem • CD/DVD size mismatch Memory card error Cause: There are two or more memory cards inserted into the HP Photosmart at the same time. Solution: Remove all but one memory card. The HP Photosmart reads the remaining memory card and displays the first photo stored on the memory card. Cause: You have inserted a Compact Flash memory card backwards or upside down. Solution: Remove the memory card and reinse rt it correctly. Disconnected Cause: Several situations can cause this error message to appear. • Your computer is not turned on. • Your computer is not connected to the HP Photosmart. • The software that came with the HP Photosmart was not installed correctly. • The software that came with the HP Photosmart is installed, but it is not running. Solution: Make sure your computer is turned on and is connected to the HP Photosmart. Also make sure you installed the software that came with the HP Photosmart. For more information, see: “ Communication problems over a USB connection” on page 69 Out of disk space Cause: There is not enough available memory on your computer to perform the task. Solution: Close some applications and try the task again. Card access error Cause: There are two or more memory cards inserted into the HP Photosmart at the same time. Solution: Remove all but one memory card. The HP Photosmart reads the remaining memory card and displays the first photo stored on the memory card. Cause: You have inserted a Compact Flash memory card backwards or upside down. Solution: Remove the memory card and reinse rt it correctly. The label of the Compact Flash card faces up and should be readable as you insert it into the slot. Cause: You have not fully inserted the memory card. Solution: Remove the memory card and reinsert it in the memory card slot until it stops. Use only one card at a time Cause: Multiple memory cards are inse rted in the HP Photosmart. If more than one memory card is inserted, the Attention light will blink rapidly, and an error message will appear on the computer screen. Remove the additional memory card to resolve the problem. Card is inserted incorrectlyCause: The card is inserted backwards or upside down. Solution: Turn the memory card so that the label side is up and the contacts are facing the HP Photosmart, and then push the card forward into the appropriate slot until the Photo light turns on. If the memory card is not inserted properly, the HP Photosmart will not respond and the Photo light (near the memory card slots) will not turn on. After the memory card has been inserted properly, the Photo light will blink for a few seconds, and then remain lit. Card is not fully inserted Cause: The card is not fully inserted. Solution: Make sure you fully insert the memory card into the appropriate slot on the HP Photosmart. If the memory card is not inserted properly, the HP Photosmart will not respond and the Photo light (near the memory card slots) will not turn on. After the memory card has been inserted properly, the Photo light will blink for a few seconds, and then remain lit. Card is damaged Cause: You formatted the card on a Windows XP computer. By default, Windows XP will format a memory card of 8 MB or less and 64 MB or more with the FAT32 format. Digital cameras and other devices use the FAT (FAT16 or FAT12) format and cannot recognize a FAT32 formatted card. Solution: Reformat your memory card in your camera or format your memory card in a Windows XP computer by selecting the FAT format. Cause: The file system is corrupted. If the file system on the card is corrupt, reformat the memory card in your digital camera. CAUTION: Reformatting the memory card will delete any photos stored on the card. If you have previously transferred the photos from your memory card to a computer, try printing the photos from the computer. Otherwise, you will need to retake any photos you might have lost. CD/DVD is upside down Cause: The CD/DVD is loaded upside down on the CD/DVD holder. Solution: Make sure the CD/DVD is snapped onto the CD/DVD holder with the printable label side up. CD/DVD printing problem Cause: The HP Photosmart stalled while printing. Solution: Make sure that there is sufficient space behind the HP Photosmart and that the CD/DVD exit slot on the back of the HP Photosmart is not blocked. If the HP Photosmart is placed close to a wall, move it at least 7.5 cm (3 inches) away from the wall. CD/DVD size mismatch Cause: The size of the CD/DVD currently loaded on the CD/DVD holder does not match the size you specified when you started the print job from the computer. Solution: Replace the CD/DVD currently loaded on the CD/DVD holder with a CD/ DVD that is the same size as specified in the print job, or cancel the print job and start again to specify the correct size in the software. Paper messages The following is a list of paper-related error messages: • Cannot load paper from input tray • Ink is drying • Out of paper • Paper jam, misfeed or blocked carriage Errors 119 Troubleshooting
