Removal and replacement procedures Maintenance and Service Guide4–5 Component replacement procedures This chapter provides removal and replacement procedures. There are as many screws of different sizes, that must be removed, replaced, or loosened when servicing the computer. Make special note of each screw size and location during removal and replacement. Service tag When ordering parts or requesting information, provide the computer serial number and model number provided on the service tag. Item Component Description 1 Product name This is the product name affixed to the front of the computer. 2 Serial number (s/n) This is an alphanumeric identifier that is unique to each product. 3 Part number/Product number (p/n) This number provides specific informat ion about the product’s hardware components. The part number helps a service technician determine what components and parts are needed. 4 Model description This is the alphanumeric identifier used to locate documents, drivers, and support for the computer. 5 Warranty period This number describes the duration of the warranty period for the computer.
4–6Maintenance and Service Guide Removal and replacement procedures Computer feet The computer feet are adhesive-backed rubber pads. The feet are included in the Rubber Kit, spare part number 580697-001. There are 4 rubber feet that attach to the base enclosure in the locati ons shown in the following illustration. Battery Before removing the battery, follow these steps: 1. Shut down the computer. If you are unsure whether the computer is off or in Hibernation, turn the computer on, and then shut it down through the operating system. 2. Disconnect all external devices connected to the computer. 3. Disconnect the power from the computer by first unplugging the power cord from the AC outlet, and then unplugging the AC adapter from the computer. Remove the battery: 1. Turn the computer upside down on a flat surface, with the battery bay toward you. 2. Slide the battery release latch 1 to release the battery. 3. Rotate the battery toward you and up 2. 4. 4–8Maintenance and Service Guide Removal and replacement procedures SIM ✎The SIM is provided by the end user as a security measure for the WWAN module. The SIM should be removed, placed into a static-dissipative container, and then replaced when the computer is reassembled. Before removing the SIM, follow these steps: 1. Shut down the computer. If you are unsure whether the computer is off or in Hibernation, turn the computer on, and then shut it down through the operating system. 2. Disconnect all external devices connected to the computer. 3. Disconnect the power from the computer by first unplugging the power cord from the AC outlet, and then unplugging the AC adapter from the computer. 4. Remove the battery (see “Battery” on page 4-6). Remove the SIM: 1. Press in on the SIM 1 to release it from the SIM slot. 2. Remove the SIM 2 from the computer. Install the SIM by inserting it into th e SIM slot until locks into position.
Removal and replacement procedures Maintenance and Service Guide4–9 Hard drive ✎The hard drive hardware spare part kit, 580683-001, includes a hard drive connector and hard drive bracket. Before removing the hard drive, follow these steps: 1. Shut down the computer. If you are unsure whether the computer is off or in Hibernation, turn the computer on, and then shut it down through the operating system. 2. Disconnect all external devices connected to the computer. 3. Disconnect the power from the computer by first unplugging the power cord from the AC outlet, and then unplugging the AC adapter from the computer. 4. Remove the battery (see “Battery” on page 4-6). Remove the hard drive: 1. Position the computer with the front toward you. 2. Loosen the three Phillips PM2.5x5.0 captive screws 1 that secure the hard drive cover to the computer. 3. Lift the right side 2 of the hard drive cover to detach it from the computer. The hard drive cover is included in the Plastics Kit, spare part number 580691-001. 4–10Maintenance and Service Guide Removal and replacement procedures 4. Loosen the two Phillips PM2.0x4.0 screws 1 that secure the hard drive to the computer. 5. Grasp the Mylar tab 2 in the hard drive bay, and pull it to the le ft to disconnect the drive from the system. 6. Grasp the Mylar tab 3 on the hard drive and pull it up to remove the hard drive from the sytem. 7. If it is necessary to replace the hard dr ive bracket or connector, follow these steps: a. Remove the four Ph illips PM3.0x4.0 screws 1 that secure the hard drive bracket to the hard drive. b. Grasp the Mylar tabs on the bracket and lift the bracket 2 straight up to remove it from the hard drive. Reverse this procedure to reassemb le and install the hard drive.

If you are unsure whether the computer is off or in Hibernation, turn the computer on, and then shut it down through the operating system. 2. Disconnect all external devices connected to the computer. 3. Disconnect the power from the computer by first unplugging the power cord from the AC outlet, and then unplugging the AC adapter from the computer. 4. Remove the battery (see “Battery” on page 4-6). 5. Remove the hard drive bay access cover (see “Hard drive” on page 4-9). Remove the WWAN module: ÄCAUTION: To prevent an unresponsive system, replace the wireless module only with a wireless module authorized for use in the computer by the governmental agency that regulates wireless de vices in your country or region. If you replace the module and then receive a warning message, remove the module to restore computer functionality, and then contact technical support through Help and Support. 1. Position the computer with the front toward you. 2. Disconnect the WWAN antenna cables 1 from the terminals on the WWAN module. ✎The red WWAN antenna cable is connected to the WWAN module “Main” terminal. The blue WWAN antenna cable is connected to the WWAN module “Aux” terminal. 3. Remove the two Phillips PM2.5x3.0 screws 2 that secure the WWAN module to the computer. (The WWAN module tilts up.) 4. Remove the WWAN module 3 by pulling it away from the slot at an angle. ✎WWAN modules are designed with a notch 4 to prevent incorrect inser tion of the WWAN module into the WWAN module slot. If you are unsure whether the computer is off or in Hibernation, turn the computer on, and then shut it down through the operating system. 2. Disconnect all external devices connected to the computer. 3. Disconnect the power from the computer by first unplugging the power cord from the AC outlet, and then unplugging the AC adapter from the computer. 4. Remove the battery (see “Battery” on page 4-6). Disconnect the WLAN antenna cables 1 from the terminals on the WLAN module. ✎The black WLAN antenna cable is connected to the WLAN module “Main” terminal. The white WLAN antenna cable is connected to the WLAN module “Aux” terminal. 5. Remove the two Phillips PM2.5x3.0 screws 2 that secure the WLAN module to the computer. (The WLAN module tilts up.) 6. If you are unsure whether the computer is off or in Hibernation, turn the computer on, and then shut it down through the operating system. 2. Disconnect all external devices connected to the computer. 3. Disconnect the power from the computer by first unplugging the power cord from the AC outlet, and then unplugging the AC adapter from the computer. 4. Remove the battery (see “Battery” on page 4-6). 5. Remove the memory/wireless module compartment cover (see “WLAN module” on page 4-12). Remove the memory module: ✎The slot nearest the front edge of the computer is fo r primary memory. The slot next to it is for expansion memory. 1. Pull away the retention clips 1 on each side of the memory module to release the memory module. (The memory module tilts up.) ÄCAUTION: To prevent damage to the memory module, hold it by the edges only. Do not touch the components on the memory module. 2. Grasp the edge of the memory module 2, and then pull it out of the memory module slot. ✎Memory modules are designed with a notch to preven t incorrect insertion into the memory module slot. Reverse this procedure to install a memory module.
