CAUTIONAny loaded roll or sheet must be unloaded before loading a sheet, see Unload a roll on page 30, and Unload a single sheet on page 35. ENWWLoad a single sheet 31 Paper handling
WARNING!For sheets thicker than 0.5mm, you must have space behind the printer equal to the length of the sheet. Easy loading procedure 1.Standing in front of the printer, open the sheet tray. If the sheet is long, extend the right extension. If the sheet is also wide extend the left extension. TipIf the tray is difficult to open, try opening from behind the printer. NOTEThe extensions are seven cm and snap in place. 2.Insert the sheet into the feeder. Load your sheet aligned with the load line and insert until the paper will not continue, with thicker sheets you feel resistance. The printer detects the sheet in three seconds. A countdown begins on the front-panel display. WARNING!Take care not to push your fingers inside the printers paper path, the results may be painful. 3.After the countdown, the paper feeds into the printer. Guide the sheet into the printer; this is especially important with thicker papers. 4.The front-panel display asks if you are loading a roll or a sheet. Select Sheet with the Up and Down keys. 32 Chapter 4 Paper handling ENWW Paper handling
5.Enter your paper category and type. TipIf you have loaded a paper type whose name does not appear in the paper list (neither in the driver nor in the front panel), you can choose a generic paper name instead. For example, if you are loading HP Aquarella Art Paper or Epson Smooth Fine Art Paper, and you dont find the exact name in the paper list, you can choose Fine art paper. 6.The printer checks the alignment and measures the sheet. NOTEDepending on the length of the sheet, it feeds out the front of the printer. 7.If the paper has been loaded successfully, the front panel displays the Ready message and the printer ready to print. If the paper is not straight, follow the instructions on the front-panel display. NOTEWhen correctly loaded, the sheet is in the back of the printer. NOTEIf you have an unexpected problem at any stage of the paper loading process, see The paper cannot be loaded successfully on page 114. 2.Select Unload paper. The sheet unloads out of the front of the printer, either catch it manually or allow it to fall in the basket. View information about the paper To view the loaded paper information, press the View loaded paper key on the front panel. You can also select the Paper menu icon and then View loaded paper. The following information is displayed on the front panel: ●Roll or sheet status ●Paper manufacturers name ●Paper type you have selected ●Width of the paper in millimeters (estimated) ●Length of the sheet in millimeters (estimated) ●Color calibration status If no paper is loaded, the message Out of paper is displayed. The same information (apart from the manufacturers name) is displayed in HP Easy Printer Care and HP Printer Utility on the Supplies page. NOTEPhoto and coated paper requires careful handling, see The print is scuffed or scratched on page 130. Paper profiles Each supported paper type has its own characteristics. For optimum print quality, the printer changes the way it prints on each different paper type. For example, some may need more ink and some may require a longer drying time. So the printer must be given a description of the requirements of each paper type. This description is called the “media” or “paper” profile. The paper profile contains the ICC profile, which describes the color characteristics of the paper; it also contains information on other characteristics and requirements of the paper that are not directly related to color. Existing paper profiles for your printer are already installed in the printers software. However, as it is inconvenient to scroll through a list of all paper types available, your printer only contains paper profiles for the most commonly used paper types. If you have a paper type for which your printer has no profile, you cannot select that paper type in the front-panel display. 36 Chapter 4 Paper handling ENWW Paper handling
There are three ways to assign a profile for a new paper type. ●Use a HP factory paper profile by selecting the closest category and type in the front panel, HP Easy Printer Care (Windows), or HP Printer Utility (Mac OS) NOTEColors may not be accurate. This method is not recommended for high-quality prints. ●Download the correct paper profile from: http://www.hp.com/go/designjet/downloads NOTEHP only provides profiles for HP paper types. If you do not find the paper profile you want on the Web, you may find that it has been added to the latest firmware for your printer. You can check the firmware release notes for information, see Update the firmware on page 100. ●Add custom paper type, see Add a custom paper type on page 37, and create an ICC profile, this works for both HP and non-HP papers Add a custom paper type Before you can use a custom paper with your printer you must add a custom paper type and allow the printer to run a color calibration. You can add a custom paper using the HP Color Center in HP Easy Printer Care (Windows) or HP Printer Utility (Mac OS). NOTEIf you have already selected Custom paper > Add Custom Paper from HP Easy Printer Care (Windows) or HP Printer Utility (Mac OS), the first Add New Paper screen appears and you can start this procedure at step four. 1.Go to the Color Center in HP Easy Printer Care (Windows) or HP Printer Utility (Mac OS). 2.Select Manage Papers. 3.In Windows, select Add new paper. In Mac OS, click +. 4.Enter your papers name. NOTEIt is recommended to use the papers commercial name to avoid confusion for other users. 5.Select a paper category. NOTEThe paper category determines the amount of ink used and other basic printing parameters. To obtain satisfactory results, experiment with different categories and use the ones that work best. 6.Load your custom paper, see Load a roll into the printer on page 27 or Load a single sheet on page 31. 7.Click Next. The printer performs a color calibration and prints a calibration chart. This may take ten minutes. NOTEFor more information on the processes available in the Color Center, see A summary of the color management process on page 57. ENWWAdd a custom paper type 37 Paper handling
8.Once the new calibration parameters are calculated and stored, you are reminded to create an ICC profile. Click Done. Your custom paper is added to the paper category you selected. 9.To create an ICC profile, which allows you to print on your paper with the best possible color accuracy, see Color profiling on page 59. Maintain paper To maintain paper quality, follow the recommendations below. ●Store rolls covered by another piece of paper or cloth ●Store cut sheets covered and clean or brush them before loading them in the printer ●Clean input and output platens and cut sheet tray ●Always keep the transparent window of your printer closed NOTEPhoto and coated paper requires careful handling, see The print is scuffed or scratched on page 130. Change the drying time You may wish to change the drying time setting to suit special printing conditions such as multiple prints where time is of higher importance or when you need to be sure ink is dry before handling. Select the Setup menu icon , then Print retrieval> Select drying time. You can select: ●Extended, to set a longer than recommended time to ensure ink is completely dry ●Optimal, to set the default and recommended time for your selected paper ●Reduced, to set a shorter than recommended time when quality is of lower importance ●None, to disable the drying time and remove your print as soon as it finishes printing WARNING!If the ink is not dry when the print is removed it could leave ink in the output tray and marks on the print. NOTEIf you cancel the drying time during a print, the printer may not feed and cut the paper right away due to the printhead maintenance, which runs in parallel. If the dry time is zero, the printer cuts the paper and then performs the printhead maintenance. However, if the dry time is greater than zero, the printer does not cut the paper until after the printhead maintenance has completed, even if the Form feed and cut key has been pressed. Turn the automatic cutter on and off To turn the printers paper cutter on or off: ●From HP Easy Printer Care (Windows), select the Settings tab and change the Cutter option in Printer Settings > Advanced. ●From HP Printer Utility (Mac OS), select Configuration > Printer Settings > Configure Printer Settings and change the Cutter option. 38 Chapter 4 Paper handling ENWW Paper handling
●From the Embedded Web Server, select the Setup tab, then Printer Settings, and change the Cutter option. ● Press the Menu key to return to the main menu, select the Setup menu icon , and then Print retrieval > Enable cutter. NOTETo cut rolled paper while the automatic cutter is disabled, see Feed and cut the paper on page 39. Feed and cut the paper To feed and cut the paper when the automatic cutter has been disabled, press the Form feed and cut key on the front panel. The paper advances and the printer makes a straight cut on the front edge. NOTEThe printer may not cut the paper directly after the Form feed and cut key is pressed, as each time a print is printed the printheads are serviced and the paper cannot be cut until the process completes. Remove the cut piece from the output tray. WARNING!If strips or short prints are left in the output tray the printer could jam.
