Carbon monoxide poisoning f rom engine exhaust. SERVICING YOUR OUTBOARD MOTOR Some of the most important saf ety precautions f ollow. However, we cannot warn you of every conceivable hazard that can arise in perf orming maintenance. Only you can decide whether or not you should perform a given task.Make sure the engine is off before you begin any maintenance or repairs. This will eliminate several potential hazards:Read the instructions before you begin, and make sure you have the tools and skills required. To reduce the possibility of f ire or explosion, be careful when working around gasoline. Use only a nonflammable solvent, not gasoline, to clean parts. Keep cigarettes, sparks, and f lames away f rom all f uel-related parts. Wear gloves when handling the propeller to protect your hands from sharp edges. Let the engine and exhaust system cool before touching. Do not run the engine unless instructed to do so. 43 ENGINE COVER REMOVAL AND INSTALLATIONEngine Oil Level Check SERVICING YOUR OUTBOARD MOTOR ENGINE COVER LOCK LEVER UNLOCK OIL FILLER CAP/DIPSTICKOIL FILLER CAP/DIPSTICK UPPER LIMIT LOWER LIMIT Running the engine with a low oil level can cause engine damage. Check the engine oil level with the engine stopped and the outboard motor in the vertical position. To install the engine cover, place the cover on the outboard motor, then turn the lock lever to the locked position. The engine cover lock lever fastens the engine cover to the outboard motor. To remove the engine cover, turn the lock lever to the unlocked position, then lift the engine cover off the outboard motor.Unlock and remove the engine cover. Remove the oil f iller cap/dipstick and wipe it clean. Insert the dipstick without screwing it in, then remove it and check the oil level shown on the dipstick.If the oil level is low, add oil to reach the upper limit mark shown on the dipstick. 44 Engine Oil Change SERVICING YOUR OUTBOARD MOTOR DRAIN BOLT Improper disposal of engine oil can be harmf ul to the environment. If you change your own oil, please dispose of the used oil properly. Put it in a sealed container, and take it to a recycling center. Do not discard it in a trash bin, dump it on the ground, or pour it down a drain. Unlock and remove the engine cover (p. ). An engine oil evacuation device may be used to remove the engine oil. Drain the used oil into a suitable container while the engine is warm. Warm oil drains quickly and completely. Remove the oil f iller cap, and remove the engine oil drain plug and washer. Allow the used oil to drain completely, then reinstall the engine oil drain plug and a new washer, and tighten it securely.With the outboard motor in a vertical position, fill to the upper limit mark on the dipstick (p. ) with the recommended oil. AMBIENT TEMPERATURE 4.8 lbf·ft (6.5 N·m , 0.66 kgf·m) 45 Engine Oil Recommendations Gear Case Oil Level Check SERVICING YOUR OUTBOARD MOTOR GEAR OIL LEVEL SCREW GEAR OIL DRAIN/FILL SCREW Oil is a major f actor af f ecting performance and service life. Use 4-stroke detergent oil.Check the gear case oil level with the engine stopped and the outboard motor in the vertical position. Remove the oil level screw and see whether oil flows from the oil level hole. If oil flows from the oil level hole, the oil level is OK. Reinstall the screw and tighten it securely. OIL LEVEL SCREW TORQUE: Honda 10W-30 FC-W outboard motor oil is recommended f or general use.If Honda 10W-30 FC-W oil is not available, Honda recommends that you use API service category SG, SH or SJ oil. 46Gear Case Oil Change SERVICING YOUR OUTBOARD MOTOR If no oil flows from the oil level hole, add the recommended oil (p. ) f ollowing the procedure described in Gear Case Oil Change.Change the gear case oil with the engine stopped and the outboard motor in the vertical position.Allow the used oil to drain completely, then install an oil pump adapter in the oil drain hole. If water or contaminated (milky- colored) oil f lows out the drain hole when the screw is removed, have the outboard motor checked by an authorized Honda Marine dealer.
