39 Problems That May Affect Emissions Replacement Parts Maintenance If you are aware of any of the following symptoms, have your engine inspected and repaired by your servicing dealer. Hard starting or stalling after starting. Rough idle. Misfiring or backfiring under load. Afterburning (backfiring). Black exhaust smoke or high fuel consumption. The emission control systems on your Honda engine were designed, built, and certified to conform with EPA and California emission regulations (models certified for sale in California). We recommend the use of genuine Honda parts whenever you have maintenance done. These original-design replacement parts are manufactured to the same standards as the original parts, so you can be confident of their performance. The use of replacement parts that are not of the original design and quality may impair the effectiveness of your emission control system. A manufacturer of an aftermarket part assumes the responsibility that the part will not adversely affect emission performance. The manufacturer or rebuilder of the part must certify that use of the part will not result in a failure of the engine to comply with emission regulations. Follow the maintenance scheduleon page . Remember that this schedule is based on the assumption that your machine will be used for its designed purpose. Sustained high-load or high-temperature operation, or use in unusually wet or dusty conditions, will require more frequent service.41 06/12/21 09:19:49 31Z07602_040

The descriptive term indicates the useful life period for the engine’s emission control system. See your Emission Control System Warrantyfor additional information. The bar graph is intended to provide you, our customer, the ability to compare the emissions performance of available engines. The lower the Air Index, the less pollution. An Air Index Information hang tag/label is applied to engines certified to an emission durability time period in accordance with the requirements of the California Air Resources Board. 06/12/21 09:20:01 31Z07602_041

42 ENGINE OIL CHANGE OIL FILLER NECK UPPER LIMIT Drain the used oil while the engine is warm. Warm oil drains quickly and completely. Place a suitable container next to the engine to catch the used oil. Turn the engine switch and vent lever to the OFF position to reduce the possibility of fuel leakage. Remove the oil filler cap/dipstick, and drain the oil into the container by tipping the engine toward the oil filler neck. Reinstall the oil filler cap/dipstick securely. Reinstall the maintenance cover and tighten the cover screw securely. Loosen the cover screw and remove the maintenance cover (see page 28 ). With the engine in a level position, fill to the upper limit of the oil filler neck with the recommended oil (see page ). 1. 2. 3. 4. 5. 6. 7.28 06/12/21 09:20:22 31Z07602_043
43 Wash your hands with soap and water after handling used oil. Improper disposal of engine oil can be harmful to the environment. If you change your own oil, please dispose of it properly. Put it in a sealed container, and take it to a recycling center. Do not discard it in a trash bin, dump it on the ground, or pour it down a drain. 06/12/21 09:20:26 31Z07602_044
44 AIR CLEANER SERVICE Using gasoline or flammable solvent to clean the air filter can cause a fire or explosion. Use only soapy water or nonflammable solvent. AIR CLEANER COVERAIR CLEANER COVER SCREW OUTER FILTER COVER SCREW MAINTENANCE COVER MAIN FILTER A dirty air cleaner will restrict air flow to the carburetor. To prevent carburetor malfunction, service the air cleaner regularly. Service more frequently when operating the generator in extremely dusty areas. Operating the engine without an air filter, or with a damaged air filter, will allow dirt to enter the engine, causing rapid engine wear. This type of damage is not covered by the Distributor’s Limited Warranty. Soak the main and outer filter in clean engine oil and squeeze out the excess oil. The engine will smoke during initial startup if too much oil is left in the air filters. Wash the main and outer filter in a solution of household detergent and warm water, then rinse thoroughly, or wash in nonflammable or high flash point solvent. Allow the air filters to dry thoroughly. Loosen the cover screw and remove the maintenance cover. Loosen the air cleaner cover screw, and remove the air cleaner cover. 4. 3. 2. 1. 06/12/21 09:20:37 31Z07602_045

46 SPARK PLUG SERVICE Recommended spark plug: SPARK PLUG MAINTENANCE COVER SPARK PLUG CAP SPARK PLUG WRENCHSPARK PLUG CAP In order to service the spark plug, you will need a spark plug wrench (commercially available). To ensure proper engine operation, the spark plug must be properly gapped and free of deposits. An incorrect spark plug can cause engine damage. Remove the spark plug maintenance cover. Use a spark plug wrench to remove the spark plug. Remove the spark plug cap. Clean any dirt from around the spark plug base.CR5HSB (NGK) If the engine has been running, allow it to cool before servicing the spark plug. 1. 2. 3. 4. 06/12/21 09:20:53 31Z07602_047

Correct the gap, if necessary, by carefully bending the side electrode. Check that the spark plug sealing washer is in good condition, and thread the spark plug in by hand to prevent cross-threading. A loose spark plug can overheat and damage the engine. Overtightening the spark plug can damage the threads in the cylinder head. Reinstall the spark plug cap on the spark plug securely.
