Completing Setup and Connecting the Power Cord 1. Attach the manual holder to the left or right side of the stand. Store the User’s Guide in the holder. 2. Unlock the casters. Then move the printer to the place of use. (The casters are meant for moving the printer for only a short distance.) Lock the casters after moving.
43 Setting Up the Printer|43 3. Remove any packing tape and plastic film. Check these areas: the front cover the ink compartment covers the maintenance tank(s) 4. Open the roll paper cover and remove the tape and packing material.
44 44|Setting Up the Printer 5. Open the front cover and remove the tape and packing material. Save the packing material in case you need to ship the printer. 6. Close the front cover. 7. Connect the power cord to the AC inlet on the back of the printer. Note: The illustrations in the following sections show the Epson Stylus Pro 9890, but the instructions are the same for the Pro 7890.
45 Setting Up the Printer|45 8. Attach the cable guides to the left or right side of the printer back and route the power cord to the side of the printer as shown. 9. For the Pro 9890, attach the loops on the paper basket cords to the cable guides. 10. Plug the power cord into a properly grounded electrical outlet. Power cord on left side Power cord on right side Caution: Do not use an outlet that is controlled by an automatic timer or wall switch. Otherwise, you may accidentally shut off the printer and cause damage.
46 46|Setting Up the Printer Installing Ink Use the ink cartridges that came with your printer for initial ink charging. During the initial installation process, it is normal for most of the ink in each cartridge to be used. The cartridges shipped with your printer are provided mainly to charge the ink system. Make sure you order a new set of cartridges as soon as possible. 1. Press the PPower button to turn on the printer. In a moment, INSTALL INK CARTRIDGE appears on the LCD screen and the ink covers pop open slightly. 2. Open both ink covers.
47 Setting Up the Printer|47 3. Remove the ink cartridges from their packages, then gently shake each cartridge for about 5 seconds. 4. Note the location of the slots corresponding to each cartridge. 5. Install the ink cartridges in the printer. Hold each cartridge with the arrow pointing toward the printer, then insert it into its slot until it clicks into place. Make sure you insert each cartridge all the way into the correct slot. 48 48|Setting Up the Printer 6. After installing all 9 cartridges, close the ink covers. The printer begins charging the ink delivery system and the PPower light flashes. After ink charging is completed, you need to load paper before READY will appear on the display. See page 55 for instructions. Connecting to Your System You can use USB and/or Ethernet network connections. For USB connection, make sure your system has the appropriate port and you have a standard, shielded cable 10 feet (6 m) long or less. To connect to a network hub, you need a standard RJ-45 CAT-5 network cable. To connect directly to your computer’s network interface, you need an RJ-45 CAT-5 crossover cable. 1. Make sure that both the printer and the computer are turned off. Caution: Charging takes about 15 minutes. Never turn off the printer, remove the maintenance tank, or open the front cover or ink covers while the PPower light is flashing, or you may damage the printer.
49 Setting Up the Printer|49 2. Plug the interface cable into the appropriate port on the printer. 3. Plug the other end of the cable into the appropriate connector on your computer, or network switch or hub. Installing the Software for Macintosh Follow the steps below to install the software on a Macintosh. For Windows, see page 50. 1. Make sure that your computer and printer are turned on and that the Epson Stylus Pro 7890 or Pro 9890 is connected to the computer. 2. Insert the printer software CD-ROM in your CD or DVD drive. 3. Double-click the Epson icon. 4. Click the Epson Stylus Pro 7890 (or 9890) icon. Network connection USB connection Note: You can check for a newer version of your printer driver on the Epson support site at www.epson.com/support. Note: If you see the message that the installer has detected an older version of EpsonNet Config on your system, you must uninstall the old version before you can install the new one. To uninstall, drag the EpsonNet folder to the trash. Then reinstall your printer software.
50 50|Setting Up the Printer 5. Follow the on-screen instructions to install the printer software (including the printer driver and EPSON LFP Remote Panel utility) and register your printer. 6. Click the User’s Guide icon to place links to the User’s Guide, Network Guide, and Epson Professional Imaging website on your desktop. 7. If connecting to a network, click the Ethernet Utility icon to install the EpsonNet Configuration utility (located in the EpsonNet folder under Applications). 8. When you’re done, close the screen and eject the CD . Restart the Macintosh if prompted. Installing the Software for Windows Follow these steps to install the software for Windows: 1. Make sure your printer is turned off. 2. Turn on your computer. 3. Insert the printer software CD in your CD or DVD drive. 4. If the AutoPlay window appears, click Run Setup.exe. If you see the User Account Control screen, click Yes or Continue.
