Adding and Replacing Parts171 NOTICE: Hard drives are extremely fragile; even a slight bump can damage the drive. NOTE: Dell does not guarantee compatibility or provide support for hard drives from sources other than Dell. To replace the hard drive in the hard drive bay: 1Follow the procedures in Before You Begin on page 149. NOTE: The number of hard drive screws may vary. 2Remove the hard drive screws on the bottom of the computer. NOTICE: When the hard drive is not in the computer, store it in protective antistatic packaging. See Protecting Against Electrostatic Discharge in the Product Information Guide. 3Slide the hard drive out of the computer. 4Remove the new drive from its packaging. Save the original packaging for storing or shipping the hard drive. NOTICE: Use firm and even pressure to slide the drive into place. Adding and Replacing Parts173 Media Bay NOTE: If the device locking screw is not present, you can remove and install devices while the computer is running and connected to a docking device (docked). Removing Media Bay Devices NOTICE: To prevent damage to devices, store them in a safe, dry place when they are not installed in the computer. Avoid pressing down on them or placing heavy objects on top of them. 1If present, remove the device locking screw from the bottom of the computer. 2If the computer is running, double-click the Safely Remove Hardware icon on the taskbar, click the device you want to eject, and click Stop. 3Press the device latch release. 1optical drive2device latch release 1 2
174Adding and Replacing Parts 4Pull the device out of the media bay. To install a device, push the new device into the bay until it clicks into place. FCM (Flash Cache Module) The FCM, or Flash Cache Module, is an internal flash drive that helps improve the performance of your computer. NOTE: This card is only compatible with the Microsoft Windows Vista® operating system. NOTE: If you ordered a FCM card with your computer, the card is already installed . 1Follow the procedures in Before You Begin on page 149. 2Remove the hinge cover (see Hinge Cover on page 152). 3Remove the keyboard (see Keyboard on page 153). 4Ground yourself by touching one of the metal connectors on the back of the computer. NOTE: If you leave the area, ground yourself again when you return to the computer. 5Slide the antenna cables out of the protective sleeve and away from the top of the FCM card. 6Release the card by pushing the metal securing brackets away from the card until the card pops up slightly.

176Adding and Replacing Parts NOTICE: When installing this card, ensure the two antenna cables are not under the card. The antenna cables are designed to lay across the top of the FCM card and into the protective sleeve. Installing the card on top of these antenna cables may cause damage to your computer. Also, do not install the FCM card in the WLAN card connector. The FCM card is designed to work in the WWAN card connector. Installing the card in the wrong slot may cause damage to your computer. 1FCM card 1

Dell™ QuickSet provides you with easy access to configure or view the following types of settings: • Network connectivity • Power management •Display • System information Depending on what you want to do in Dell™ QuickSet, you can start it by either clicking, double-clicking, or right-clicking the QuickSet icon in the Microsoft® Wind ows® taskbar. The taskbar is located in the lower-right corner of your screen. For more information about QuickSet, right-click the QuickSet icon and select Help.
Traveling With Your Computer179 18 Traveling With Your Computer Identifying Your Computer • Attach a name tag or business card to the computer. • Write down your Service Tag and store it in a safe place away from the computer or carrying case. Use the Service Tag if you need to report a loss or theft to law enforcement officials and to Dell. • Create a file on the Microsoft ® Win dows® desktop called if_found. Place information such as your name, address, and phone number in this file. • Contact your credit card company and ask if it offers coded identification tags. Packing the Computer • Remove any external devices attached to the computer and store them in a safe place. Remove any cables attached to installed PC Cards, and remove any extended PC Cards. • To make the computer as light as possible, replace any devices installed in the module bay with the Dell TravelLite™ module. • Fully charge the main battery and any spare batteries that you plan to carry with you. • Shut down the computer. • Disconnect the AC adapter. NOTICE: When the display is closed, extraneous items on the keyboard or palm rest could damage the display. • Remove any extraneous items, such as paper clips, pens, and paper, from the keyboard and palm rest and close the display.
180Traveling With Your Computer • Use the optional Dell™ carrying case to pack the computer and its accessories together safely. • Avoid packing the computer with items such as shaving cream, colognes, perfumes, or food. NOTICE: If the computer has been exposed to extreme temperatures, allow it to acclimate to room temperature for 1 hour before turning it on. • Protect the computer, the batteries, and the hard drive from hazards such as extreme temperatures and overexposure to sunlight, dirt, dust, or liquids. • Pack the computer so that it does not slide around in the trunk of your car or in an overhead storage compartment. Travel Tips NOTICE: Do not move the computer while using the optical drive to prevent loss of data. NOTICE: Do not check the computer as baggage. • Consider disabling wireless activity on your computer to maximize battery operating time. To disable wireless activity, use the wireless switch (see Enabling/Disabling the Dell™ Mobile Broadband Card on page 70). • Consider changing your power management options to maximize battery operating time (see Configuring Power Management Settings on page 46). • If you are traveling internationally, carry proof of ownership—or of your right to use the computer if it is company-owned—to speed your passage through customs. Investigate the customs regulations of the countries you plan to visit, and consider acquiring an international carnet (also known as a merchandise passport) from your government. • Find out what type of electrical outlets are used in the countries you will visit, and have appropriate power adapters. • Check with your credit card company for information about the kinds of emergency travel assistance it offers to users of portable computers.
