    							Toner smears or print comes off page.  
       
    If you are printing on an uneven print surface, change the paper type setting in the printer driver. For example, change the plain paper to thick.  
     
       
       
    Toner spots appear on the page/printing is blurred.  
      3.   If the print is too light, Select Refresh Mode from the 
    list. Press the Start(1) - (4) buttons.    
       
    CAUTION:  Using the Refresh Mode consumes extra toner.    
    4.   After you complete the Refresh Mode, select Chart 
    Print from the list. Press the Print with A4(3) or Print 
    with Letter(C) button for 4 Colors Configuration Chart. 
     Printing  appears.    
    Is the problem recovered?  
    Yes. The task is complete.  
    No. The PHD unit is old or damaged. Replace the PHD unit.  
    Try the spare PHD unit, if possible.  
    1.   Replace the PHD unit. See  Replacing the PHD (Print 
    Head Device) Unit  and  Installing the PHD Unit .    
    2.   After you replace the PHD unit, click the  Tool Box  
    button.    
    3.   Press the Print with A4(3) or Print with Letter(C) 
    button.  
    Is the problem recovered?    
    Yes. The PHD unit is old or damaged. Replace the PHD unit.  
    No. Contact Dell.  
    Contact Dell.  
    1.   Press [Printing Preferences], and then click the Paper 
    Tray tab.    
    Verify that the correct print media is being used.  
    1.   See  Print Media Sizes and Support .    
    Try the spare PHD unit, if possible.  
    1.   Replace the PHD unit. See  Replacing the PHD (Print 
    Head Device) Unit  and  Installing the PHD Unit .    
    2.   After you replace the PHD unit, print paper.  Printing   
    appears.  
    Is the problem recovered?    
    Yes. The PHD unit is old or damaged. Replace the PHD unit.  
    No. Return to step 1.  
    Try the spare fuser, if possible.  
    1.   Replace the fuser. See  Removing the Used Fuser  
    and  Installing a New Fuser .    
    2.   After you replace the fuser, print paper.  Printing  
    appears.  
    Is the problem recovered?  
    Yes. The fuser is old or damaged. Replace the fuser.  
    No. Contact Dell.

      Check the toner cartridges is installed correctly.  
    1.   See  Installing the Toner Cartridges .    
    Ensure the PHD unit is installed correctly.  
    1.   See  Replacing the PHD (Print Head Device) Unit  and 
     Installing the PHD Unit .    
    Try the spare PHD unit, if possible.  
    1.   Replace the PHD unit. See  Replacing the PHD (Print 
    Head Device) Unit  and  Installing the PHD Unit .    
    2.   After you replace the PHD unit, click the  Tool Box  
    button.    
    3.   Press Print with A4(1) or Print with Letter(A). 
     Printing  appears.    
    Is the problem recovered?  
    Yes. The PHD unit is old or damaged. Replace the PHD unit.  
    No. Contact Dell.

    The toner cartridges may be low or need to be replaced. 
    Confirm the amount of toner in each toner cartridge.  
    1.   Press [Printer Status], and then click the Status tab in 
    the printer driver.    
    Ensure Non - Dell Toner is not selected in the Printer 
    Maintenance tab in the Tool Box.  
    1.   Click the  Tool Box  button.    
    Set Toner Saving Mode to Off in the printer driver.  
    1.   Press [Printing Preferences], and then click the 
    Advanced tab.    
    If you are printing on an uneven print surface, change the

    Head Device) Unit  and  Installing the PHD Unit .    
    2.   After you replace the PHD unit, click the  Tool Box  
    button.    
    3.   Press [Chart Print], and then press the Print with A4
    (3) or Print with Letter(C) button.  
    Is the problem recovered?    
    Yes. The PHD unit is old or damaged. Replace the PHD unit.  
    No. Contact Dell.

    Is the problem recovered?    
    Yes. The PHD unit is old or damaged. Replace the PHD unit.  
    No. Contact Dell.

    Ensure Color (Auto) is selected in Output Color on the

    Vertical blanks  
      Print Setup tab in the printer driver.  
    1.   Press [Printing Preferences], and then click the Print 
    Setup tab.    
    Try the spare PHD unit, if possible.  
    1.   Replace the PHD unit. See  Replacing the PHD (Print 
    Head Device) Unit  and  Installing the PHD Unit .    
    2.   After you replace the PHD unit, click the  Tool Box  
    button.    
    3.   Press the Print with A4(3) or Print with Letter(C) 
    button.    
    Is the problem recovered?  
    Yes. The PHD unit is old or damaged. Replace the PHD unit.  
    No. Contact Dell.

    Locate the cause of the problem by using the Pitch 
    Configuration Chart.  
    1.   Click the  Tool Box  button.    
    2.   Press the Print with A4(1) or Print with Letter(A) 
    button.    
    3.   Do either of the following:    
    When the cause of the problem was located in the PHD 
    unit:  
    1.    Replace the PHD unit. See  Replacing the PHD (Print 
    Head Device) Unit  and  Installing the PHD Unit .    
    2.   After you replace the PHD unit, click the  Tool Box  
    button.    
    3.   Press the Print with A4(1) or Print with Letter(A) 
    button.  Printing  appears.  
    Is the problem recovered?    
    Yes. The PHD unit is old or damaged. Replace the PHD unit.  
    No. Contact Dell.  
    When the cause of the problem was located in the fuser:  
    1.   Replace the fuser. See  Removing the Used Fuser  
    and  Installing a New Fuser .    
    2.   After you replace the fuser, click the  Tool Box  button.    
    3.   Press the Print with A4(1) or Print with Letter(A) 
    button.  Printing  appears.  
    Is the problem recovered?    
    Yes. The fuser is old or damaged. Replace the fuser  
    No. Contact Dell.  
    When the cause of the problem was located in the 
    printer:  
    1.   Contact Dell.      
    						
    							   
     
    Ghost  
      Ensure the light path is not covered.  
    1.   Remove the PHD unit, and keep in the dark place. See 
     Replacing the PHD (Print Head Device) Unit .    
    2.   Check the light path, and then remove the shielding.    
    3.   Reinstall the PHD unit. See  Installing the PHD Unit .    
    4.   Click the  Tool Box  button.    
    5.   Press the Print with A4(1) or Print with Letter(A) 
    button.  Printing  appears.  
    Is the problem recovered?    
    Yes. The task is complete.  
    No. Go to the next step.  
    Try the spare PHD unit, if possible.  
    1.   Replace the PHD unit. See  Replacing the PHD (Print 
    Head Device) Unit  and  Installing the PHD Unit .    
    2.   After you replace the PHD unit, click the  Tool Box  
    button.    
    3.   After you replace the PHD unit, press the Print with A4
    (1) or Print with Letter(A) button.  Printing  appears.  
    Is the problem recovered?    
    Yes. The PHD unit is old or damaged. Replace the PHD unit.  
    No. Contact Dell.  
    Contact Dell.  
    Locate the cause of the problem by using the Ghost 
    Configuration Chart.  
    1.   Click the  Tool Box  button.    
    2.   Press the Print with A4(2), or Print with Letter(B) 
    button.   
    Do either of the following:    
    When the ghost is printed in positive, try the spare PHD 
    unit, if possible.  
    1.   See  Replacing the PHD (Print Head Device) Unit  and 
     Installing the PHD Unit .    
    2.   After you replace the PHD unit, press [Chart Print], 
    and then press the Print with A4(2), or Print with 
    Letter(B) button.  Printing  appears.  
    Is the problem recovered?    
    Yes. The PHD unit is old or damaged. Replace the PHD unit.  
    No. Contact Dell.  
    When the ghost is printed in negative, use the 
    recommended paper.  
    Is the problem recovered?  
    Yes. The task is complete.  
    No.  Do either of the following:  
    Try the spare PHD unit, if possible.  
    1.   Replace the PHD unit. See  Replacing the PHD (Print 
    Head Device) Unit  and  Installing the PHD Unit .    
    2.   After you replace the PHD unit, click the  Tool Box  
    button, and then press the Print with A4(2), or Print 
    with Letter(B) button.  Printing  appears.  
    Is the problem recovered?    
    Yes. The PHD unit is old or damaged. Replace the PHD 
    unit.  
    No. Contact Dell.  
    Adjust the transfer bias.  
    1.   Click the  Tool Box  button.    
    2.   Adjust the setting for the paper type, and then press   
    						
    							Light fatigue  
     
       
       
    Fog  
     
       
     
    Bead - Carry - Out (BCO)  
      the Apply New Settings button.    
    3.   Click the  Tool Box  button.    
    4.   Press the Print with A4(2) or Print with Letter (B) 
    button.    
    Check the pattern for light fatigue.  
    1.   Click the  Tool Box  button.    
    2.   Press the Print with A4(1) or Print with Letter(A) 
    button.  Printing  appears.  
    Is the pattern matched?    
    Yes. Do the PHD Refresh Mode.  
    1.   Click the  Tool Box  button.    
    2.   After you start the PHD Refresh Mode, click the  Tool 
    Box  button, and then press the Print with A4(3), or 
    Print with Letter(C) button.  Printing  appears.  
    Is the problem recovered?    
    Yes. The task is complete.  
    No.  Replace the PHD unit. See  Replacing the PHD (Print 
    Head Device) Unit  and  Installing the PHD Unit .  
    No. Contact Dell.  
    Do the PHD Refresh Mode.  
    1.   Click the  Tool Box  button.    
    2.   After you complete the Refresh Mode, select Chart 
    Print from the list. Press the Print with A4 (3) or Print 
    with Letter (C) button.  Printing  appears.  
    Is the problem recovered?    
    Yes. The task is complete.  
    No. Replace the PHD unit, if possible. See  Replacing the 
    PHD (Print Head Device) Unit  and  Installing the PHD 
    Unit .  
    After you complete the Refresh Mode, select Chart Print 
    from the list. Press the Print with A4 (3) or Print with Letter 
    (C) button. Printing appears.  
    Is the problem recovered?  
    Yes. The task is complete.

    Banding  
     
       
      Do Adjust Altitude if you install the printer in a high 
    altitude location.  
    1.   Click the  Tool Box  button.    
    2.   Selects the value close to the height of the location to 
    install the printer.    
    Is the problem recovered?  
    Yes. The task is complete.  
    No. Replace the PHD unit, if possible. See  Replacing the 
    PHD (Print Head Device) Unit  and  Installing the PHD 
    Unit .  
    Is the problem recovered?  
    Yes. The PHD unit is old or damaged. Replace the PHD 
    unit.  
    No. Contact Dell.  
    Locate the cause of the problem by using the Pitch 
    Configuration Chart.  
    1.   Click the  Tool Box  button.    
    2.   Press Print with A4(1), or Print with Letter(A).    
    3.   Do either of the following:    
    The cause of the problem was located in the PHD unit.  
    1.   Replace the PHD unit. See  Replacing the PHD (Print 
    Head Device) Unit  and  Installing the PHD Unit .    
    2.   After you replace the PHD unit, press Print with A4(1), 
    or Print with Letter(A).  Printing  appears.  
    Is the problem recovered?    
    Yes. The task is complete.  
    No. Contact Dell.  
    The cause of the problem was located in the fuser.  
    1.   Replace the fuser. See  Removing the Used Fuser  
    and  Installing a New Fuser .    
    2.   After you replace the fuser, press Print with A4(1), or 
    Print with Letter(A).  Printing  appears.  
    Is the problem recovered?    
    Yes. The task is complete.  
    No. Contact Dell.  
    The cause of the problem was located in the printer, or 
    the cause was not determined.  
    1.   Contact Dell.      
    						
    							Auger mark  
     
       
     
    Abnormal noise  
      Is the error print match with the pattern for the auger 
    mark?  
    Yes. Click the  Tool Box  button.  
    1.   Press the Start button.    
    2.   After you perform the Developer Stir Mode, click the 
    Tool Box  button, and then press Print with A4(1) or 
    Print with Letter(A).  Printing  appears.  
    Is the problem recovered?    
    Yes. The task is complete.  
    No. Replace the PHD unit. See  Replacing the PHD (Print 
    Head Device) Unit  and  Installing the PHD Unit .  
    No. Replace the PHD unit. See  Replacing the PHD (Print 
    Head Device) Unit  and  Installing the PHD Unit .  
    Contact Dell.  
    Locate the cause of the problem by removing the toner 
    cartridges, fuser, and PHD unit.  
    1.   Remove the toner cartridges, fuser, and PHD unit. See 
     Removing the Used Toner Cartridge ,  Removing the 
    Used Fuser , and  Replacing the PHD (Print Head 
    Device) Unit .    
    2.   Click the  Tool Box  button.    
    3.   Press the  Start  button after selecting  Main Motor 
    Operation Check ,  Fuser Motor Operation Check , and 
    Dispense Motor Check  to identify the abnormal noise.  
    Check if the noise from the  Play of Sound  button is 
    matched with the abnormal noise.    
    1.   Is the noise from  Main Motor Operation Check  
    matched?    
    Yes. Contact Dell.  
    No. Go to the next step.  
    2.   Is the noise from  Fuser Motor Operation Check  
    matched?    
    Yes. Contact Dell.  
    No. Go to the next step.  
    3.   Is the noise from  Dispense Motor Check  matched?    
    NOTE:  Do not check the operation of the 
    dispense motor repeatedly.
    Yes. Contact Dell.  
    No. Replace the fuser. See  Removing the Used Fuser  and 
     Installing a New Fuser .  
    4.   Is the noise from  Fuser Motor Operation Check  
    matched?    
    Yes. Contact Dell.  
    No. Replace the PHD unit. See  Replacing the PHD (Print 
    Head Device) Unit  and  Installing the PHD Unit .    
    						
    							Jam/Alignment  
     
       
     
     
       
     
    Misfeed jam  
      5.   Is the noise from  Main Motor Operation Check  
    matched?    
    Yes. Contact Dell.  
    The job prints, but the top and side margins are incorrect.  
    1.   Ensure the margins are set correctly in your software 
    program.    
    Color registration is out of alignment.  
    Do either of the following:  
    1.   Click the  Tool Box  button.    
    2.   Press the Start button for Color Regi Chart.    
    Is the problem recovered?  
    Yes. The task is complete.  
    No. Try the spare PHD unit, if possible.  
    1.   Replace the PHD unit. See  Replacing the PHD (Print 
    Head Device) Unit  and  Installing the PHD Unit .    
    2.   After you replace the PHD unit, click the  Tool Box  
    button.    
    3.   Press the Start button for Auto Correct.  
    Is the color chart matched with the error paper?    
    Yes. The PHD unit is old or damaged. Replace the PHD unit.  
    See  Replacing the PHD (Print Head Device) Unit  and 
     Installing the PHD Unit .  
    No. Press the Start button for Color Regi Chart.  
    Is the color chart matched with the error paper?  
    Yes. The task is complete.  
    No. Check the offset value shown in the printed chart, and 
    then specify each value  for Color Registration 
    Adjustment 1 (LateralyfDQG&RORU5HJLVWUDWLRQ
