47 Routine Maintenance „ Manual Print Head Alignment If the results of Automatic Print Head Alignment are not satisfactory, follow the procedure below to perform Manual Print Head Alignmen t to precisely align the Print Head. For details on performing Automa tic Print Head Alignment, see “Automatic Print Head Alignment” on page 44. 1Make sure that the printer is on and load three sheets of A4 or Letter-sized plain paper in the Auto Sheet Feeder or Cassette. 2Press the Open Button to open the Paper Ou tput Tray and extend the Output Tray Extension. 3Press the Paper Feed Switch to select the paper source in which you loaded the paper. 4Open the printer properties dialog box. 5Click the Maintenance tab and then Custom Settings. 6Select the Align heads manually check box, and then click Send. 7When the confirmation message is displayed, click OK. 8In the Maintenance sheet click Print head alignment. 9When the confirmation message is displayed, click Print Head Alignment . 10After the pattern is printed, click Ye s. Important You cannot print the print head alignment pattern if paper of size other than A4 or Letter is loaded. Be sure to use A4 or Letter-sized plain paper. Important Do not open the Top Cover while printing. Note Clicking Check Setting prints the current settings and finishes Print Head Alignment.

Columns G to J are striped vertically and columns K and L are striped horizontally. For Columns K and L, the best patterns will be smooth and have no streaks in the border indicated by the arrows. 55 Routine Maintenance Cleaning Your Printer This section describes the cleaning procedure that is needed to maintain your printer. „Cleaning the Paper Feed Rollers (Roller Cleaning) Clean the paper feed rollers if paper is not fed pr operly. Cleaning the paper feed rollers will wear the rollers, so perform this only when necessary. 1Make sure that the printer is turned on, and then remove any paper from the Auto Sheet Feeder and Cassette. 2Press the Open Button to open the Paper Ou tput Tray and extend the Output Tray Extension. 3Press the Paper Feed Switch to select the paper source to clean. 4Hold down the RESUME/CANCEL button and release it when the POWER lamp flashes green three times. The Paper Feed Rollers will rotate as they clean. 5Repeat step 4 twice. 6Load three or more sheets of A4 or Letter-sized plain paper in portrait orientation in the paper source you selected in step 3. 7Hold down the RESUME/CANCEL button and release it when the POWER lamp flashes green three times. The paper cleans the Paper Feed Rollers as it feeds through the printer. 8Repeat step 7 three times. If there are no signs of improvement after per forming cleaning three times, contact a Canon service representative. Note Make sure that the Inner Cover is closed.
56Routine Maintenance „Cleaning the Inside of the Printer If the printed paper is smudged, the inside of the printer may be dirty. To always get best quality printing result, per iodical cleaning of the inside of the printer is recommended. You can clean this part in two ways: z See “Cleaning with the Printer Driver (Bottom Plate Cleaning)” on page 56. z See “Cleaning the Protrusions Inside the Printer” on page 59. z Cleaning with the Printer Driver (Bottom Plate Cleaning) Important When using Photo Paper Plus Double Sided PP-101D, be sure to clean the inside of the printer before printing. Note zMake sure that the Inner Cover is closed. Cleaning the Inside of the Printer without a Computer z The inside of the printer can also be cleaned without a computer; it can be performed from the printer itself. 1. Make sure that the printer is turned on, and then remove any paper from the Auto Sheet Feeder. 2. Press the Open Button to open the Paper Output Tray and extend the Output Tray Extension. 3. Fold a sheet of A4 or Letter-sized plain paper in half widthwise, and then unfold it. 4. Load this and only this sheet of paper in the Auto Sheet Feeder with the open side to the front. 5. Hold down the RESUME/CANCEL button and release it when the POWER lamp flashes green five times. The paper cleans the inside of the printer as it feeds through the printer. If the ejected paper is smudged, clean the inside of the printer again. If the problem is not resolved after perform ing cleaning twice, the protrusions inside the printer may be stained. Clean them according to instructions. See “Cleaning the Protrusions Inside the Printer” on page 59.
