WARNING Clean the machine using a soft, dry cloth. Do not use alcohol, benzene, paint thinner, or other flammable substances. IMPORTANT •Be careful not to scratch the transparent sheet or peel it by force. •Do not wet the cloth with water or detergent. •Be careful not to touch unnecessary parts in the machine when cleaning. 4Take the drum cartridge out of the protective bag. Open the protective bag with scissors, so as not to damage the cartridge. IMPORTANT •Keep the protective bag in which the cartridge came in. It may be required when taking out the drum car tridge for machine maintenance. (:0*

Be careful not to hold or touch the portions that are not described for this procedure such as the sensors. Precautions for Handling the Drum Cartridge A drum cartridge consists of parts that are sensitive to light and delicate parts. Therefore, handling the cartridge without caution may lead to damage or a deterioration in the print quality. Be careful of the following points when removing or installing the cartridge. WARNING Do not burn or throw used drum cartridges into open flames, as this may cause the toner remaining inside the cartridges to ignite resulting in burns or a fire. CAUTION If toner gets onto your hands or clothing, wash it off immediately with cold water. Do not use warm water as this may set the toner permanently, and you may not be able to remove the toner stains. IMPORTANT •Print quality may deteriorate if you touch or damage the drum that is set inside. Be careful not to touch the drum or open the drum protective shutter. Replacing the Drum Cartridge8-30 Maintenance 8 •Do not expose the drum cartridge to direct sunlight or strong light. •If a drum cartridge has to be removed from the machine for maintenance, attach the protective cover immediately and place it in the protective bag that it came in. •Do not hold or touch the electrical contacts. It may result in damage to the machine. •Do not hold or touch the imaging transfer belt. The image quality may deteriorate. Do not apply shock to the drum cartridge memory or bring it near magnetic waves. It may result in damage to the machine. •When handling a drum car tridge, hold it properly as shown in the figure. Replacing the Drum Cartridge8-31 Maintenance 8 •Never attempt to disassemble or modify the cartridge. •If a cartridge is brought to an environment where the temperature differs extremely, condensation may occur both inside and on the outside of the cartridge. If you are going to install a cartridge that was stored in a cold place in a warm room, leave the cartridge stored in the protective bag for over two hours in the warm room so that it can adapt to the ambient temperature. •Be sure to use a new cartridge within the expiration date indicated on the package. •Using a genuine Canon drum cartridge is recommended. Storing a Drum Cartridge Be careful of the following points for storing new cartridges or those that were removed for maintenance. IMPORTANT •Do not remove a new drum cartridge from the protective bag until it is ready to be used. •If a drum cartridge has to be removed from the machine for maintenance, place it in the protective bag that it came in or wrap it with a thick cloth immediately. •Do not store a cartridge in a place exposed to direct sunlight. •Do not store a cartridge in a hot or humid place, or a place where the temperature and humidity can change significantly. Storing temperature range: 32 to 95 °F (0 to 35 °C) Storing humidity range: 35 to 85 % RH (no condensation) •Do not store a cartridge in a place that can generate corrosive gases such as ammonia, a place in which a considerable amount of salt is contained in the air, or a place with a lot of dust. •Store the cartridge out of the reach of small children. Condensation Even within the storable humidity range, water drops may develop both inside and on the outside of the cartridge due to the difference in temperature. The development of water drops is called condensation. Condensation will adversely affect the quality of the cartridge. (:0*
Repacking and Transporting Your Machine8-32 Maintenance 8 Repacking and Transporting Your Machine Be sure to unplug the power cord before transporting the machine. If the machine is likely to be subjected to vibration (e.g., when transporting over long distances), the following precautions should be taken. If you do not follow these precautions, the machine may be damaged or the quality of your printouts may be adversely affected. 1Disconnect the printer cable and /or network. 2Lift the scanning platform. 3Open the cartridge cover. 4Remove a toner cartridge from the machine. In order to avoid direct sunlight, place the toner cartridge in the protective bag that it came in when you purchased it. 5Close the cartridge cover. 6The machine will rotate to the next cartridge position. Repeat steps 3 to 5 until all the toner cartridges are removed. 7Open the cartridge cover again. 8Remove the drum cartridge and store it as described on page 9-4. 9Close the cartridge cover and lower the scanning platform. 10Detach the document feeder tray. 11Unplug the power cord.
