„ Using the Platen Glass
1Open the Document Cover.
2Load the original document with the side  to be copied, scanned, or faxed facing 
down on the Platen Glass.
z To make copies or scan documents
Align the original document with the alignment 
mark as shown in the figure on the right.

z Do not place any objects weighing more than 4.4 lb / 2.0 kg on the Platen Glass.
z Do not press or put weight on the original with pressure exceeding 4.4 lb / 2.0 kg.

Place the photograph at least 0.4 inches / 10 
mm away from and in square with the edges of 
the Platen Glass.
(B) 0.4 inches / 10 mm
When setting two or more photographs at the 
same time, place them at least 0.4 inches / 10 
mm apart from each other.
(C) 0.4 inches / 10 mm

„Using the ADF
1Remove any documents from the Platen Glass.
2Open the Document Tray.
3Load the original document with the side to 
be copied, scanned, or faxed facing up in the 
ADF.
4Adjust the Document Guides to match the 
document width.
Note
Set a document on the Platen Glass if you want to scan it at optimum quality.
Note
Ensure that the edge of the document stack is in line 
with the Paper Size Mark (A) imprinted on the 
Document Tray.

Loading Printing Paper
This section describes how to load printing paper in the Rear Tray and the Cassette.

Canon recommends that you use Canon genuine  media to ensure optimal print quality.

zAt purchase, the machine is set to feed from the Cassette. If you are printing without changing paper

website. You may not be able to purchase some Canon genuine papers depending on the

*2  Proper feeding of paper may not be possible at the maximum capacity depending on the 
type of paper or environmental conditions (either very high or low temperature and humidity). 
In such cases, reduce the sheets of paper you load at a time to around half.

zIf You Print Regularly on Photo Paper as well as on Plain Paper
If you use photo paper as much as plain paper, you can load photo paper in the Rear Tray and 
plain paper in the Cassette. This way, you can switch the paper source according to the type of 
paper just by pressing the Feed Switch.
You can also specify the type and size of paper to be fed from the Cassette using the printer 
driver. You can print more efficiently by specifying the type of paper you use regularly...

„ Changing the Paper Source
Each time you press the  Feed Switch, the paper source to be used switches between the Rear 
Tray and the Cassette. The paper feeds from the paper source whose lamp is lit.

When Printing from Your Computer
If a setting other than  Paper Feed Switch is selected for Paper Source in the printer driver, the 
Feed Switch  on the machine will be disabled and the printer driver settings...

„Loading Paper
z Loading Paper in the Rear Tray
1Flatten the four corners of  the paper before loading it.
ImportantzLoad A4, Letter, or Legal-sized plain paper when receiving faxes. Legal-sized paper can only be 
loaded in the Rear Tray.
z You cannot print on postcards affixed with photos or stickers.
z Always load paper in portrait orientation (A). Loading paper in landscape orientation (B) can 
cause the paper to be jammed.
