    Before Using the Machine
    z Loading Paper in the Cassette
    Load plain paper in the Cassette.
    1Flatten the four corners of  the paper before loading it.
    See “Flatten the four corners of the paper before loading it.” on page 25.
    2Pull out the Cassette from the machine.
    3Load the paper with the print side facing 
    DOWN.
    (1)Load the paper in the Cassette with the print 
    side facing DOWN and the leading edge to the 
    far side.
    (2) Align the paper stack against the right side of 
    the Cassette.
    (3) Slide the Paper Guides to fit to the loaded 
    paper stack.
    Important
    When loading Legal-sized paper, pull the tab (B) towards you to unlock and fully extend the 
    Cassette. 
    Do not load higher than the Load 
    Limit Mark (A).

    4Insert the Cassette  into the machine.
    Push the Cassette all the way into the machine.
    5Open the Paper Output Tray.
    (1)Open the Paper Output Tray.
    Press the Open button to open the Paper 
    Output Tray.
    (2) Open the Output Tray Extension.
    6Specify the page size and media type settings according to the loaded paper.
    When  Plain paper  is selected for  Media type, the paper source will switch to the Cassette.
    Important
    If Legal-sized paper is loaded in the Cassette, the Cassette will protrude slightly.
    Note
    zWhen using the Operation Panel on the machine to perform copying or printing operation 
    without using a computer, select the size and type of the loaded paper in  Page size and Media 
    type  in each mode.
    For details on settings in each mode, see “Setting Items” on page 33 for the copy mode and 
    “Setting Items” on page 41 for the memory card mode.
    z When using the machine connected to a computer, select the size and type of the loaded paper 
    in Page Size  (or Paper Size ) and Media Type  in the printer driver.
    For details on printer driver settings, see “Printing with Windows” on page 44 or “Printing with 
    Macintosh” on page 45.

    „Loading Envelopes
    Use either European DL or US Comm. Env. #10-sized envelope.
    With proper printer driver settings, the address will be printed according to the direction of 
    envelope.
    1Prepare the envelopes.
    zPress down on all four corners and edges of the envelopes to flatten them.
    zIf the envelopes are curled, hold the opposite corners and gently twist them in the opposite 
    direction.
    zIf the corner of the envelope flap is folded, flatten it.
    zIf the leading edge of an envelope is puffed up or curled, use a pen to press the envelope 
    flat and sharpen the crease.
    Press the envelope flat, working from the middle to the edge.
    * The above illustrations show a side view of the leading edge of the envelope.
    ImportantzLoad envelopes in the Rear Tray.
    zYou need to print from the computer to print on envelopes.
    zDo not use the following envelopes:
    – Envelopes with a double flap (or sticker flaps)
    – Envelopes with an embossed or treated surface
    – Envelopes with pressure seals
    – Envelopes whose gummed flaps are already moistened and adhesive
    Important
    The envelopes may jam in the machine if they are not flat or the edges are not aligned.
    Make sure that no curl or puff exceeds 0.1 inches / 3 mm.

    2Load the envelopes.
    (1)Load the envelope against the Cover Guide 
    (the right side of the Paper Support).
    Load with the address side facing UP and the 
    rear flaps DOWN on the left.
    Up to 10 envelopes can be loaded at once.
    (2) Pinch the Paper Guide and slide it against the 
    left side of the envelope.
    3Specify the settings in  the printer driver.
    (1)Select  Envelope  in Media Type . The paper source will be switched to the Rear Tray.
    (2) Select the size for envelopes.
    In Windows
    ®, select  DL Env.  or Comm. Env. #10  in Page Size .
    In Macintosh®, select  DL Envelope  or #10 Envelope  in Paper Size .
    (3) Select  Landscape  in Orientation .
    Note
    Make sure that the Cover Guide is set upright 
    when you load envelopes in the Rear Tray.
    Important
    Do not slide the Paper Guide too hard. The 
    envelopes may not be fed properly.
    Important
    Be sure to set the printer driver setting properly. If you do not, the address may be printed in the 
    wrong direction.

    For details on printer driver settings, see “Printing with Windows” on page 44 or “Printing with 
    Macintosh” on page 45.

    „ Loading Small-Sized Paper
    You can use 4 x 6 / 101.6 x 152.4 mm, 5 x 7 / 127.0 x 177.8 mm, and Credit card-sized 
    papers.
    (1) Load the small-sized paper against the Cover 
    Guide (the right side of the Paper Support) with 
    the print side facing UP.
    (2) Pinch the Paper Guide and slide it against the 
    left side of the paper stack.
    (3) Specify the page size and media type settings 
    according to the loaded paper.
    When any option other than  Plain paper is 
    selected for  Media type, the paper source will 
    switch to the Rear Tray.
    Important
    Always load paper in portrait orientation (A). Loading paper in landscape orientation (B) can cause 
    the paper to be jammed.
    Note
    Load 4 x 6 / 101.6 x 152.4 mm, 5 x 7 / 127.0 x 177.8 mm, and Credit card-sized papers in the 
    Rear Tray.
    Note
    Make sure that the Cover Guide is set upright 
    when you load paper in the Rear Tray.

    Making Copies
    This section describes the basic procedure to make  copies. For details, refer to “Copying” in the 
    User’s Guide  on-screen manual.
    1Turn on the machine.
    See “Turning the Machine On and Off” on page 14.
    2Press the COPY button to select the copy  mode if another mode has been 
    selected.
    3Load paper.
    See “Loading Printing Paper” on page 20.
    4Load the original document on the Pl aten Glass (A) or in the ADF (B).
    See “Handling the Original Document” on page 16.
    5Specify the copy settings.
    (1)Use the  { or  } button or the Numeric buttons to 
    specify the number of copies.
    (2) Use the  [ or  ] button to adjust the intensity.
    (3) Confirm the page size, media type, and other 
    settings.
    The paper source will switch to the Cassette when 
    Media type  is set to Plain paper , or to the Rear 
    Tray when any other type of media is selected.
    To change page size, media type, and other settings, press the  Settings button.
    See “Setting Items” on page 33.
    6Press the  Color button for color copying, or the  Black button for black & white 
    copying.

    Setting Items
    Press the Settings button in the copy mode to change the copy settings such as page size, media 
    type, and print quality.
    zTa b  1
    You can specify the settings of the printing paper, print quality, etc.
    (1) Page size
    Select the page size of the loaded paper.
    (2) Media type
    Select the media type of the loaded paper.
    (3) Print quality
    Adjust print quality according to the original.
    (4) Magnification
    Specify the reduction/enlargement method. For details, refer to “Reducing or Enlarging a 
    Copy” in “Making Copies” of the User’s Guide on-screen manual.

    You can specify whether to enable the automatic intensity adjustment.
    Note
    zTo change the tab, use the { or } button to select the tab and use the [ or ] button.
    zDepending on the functions, some setting items cannot be specified in combination.
    zThe settings of the page size, media type, and print quality are retained even if the machine is turned 
    off.
    Note
    zIf you used Fast with media type set to Plain paper and the quality is not as good as 
    expected, select Standard or High and try copying again.
    zSelect High to copy in grayscale. Grayscale renders tones in a range of grays instead of 
    black or white.

    (5) Auto intensity
    Specify whether the intensity is adjusted automatically when copying originals loaded on 
    the Platen Glass.
    When Auto intensity ON is selected, Auto will be displayed in the intensity slide bar on 
    the copy screen.
    Important
    You can change the intensity by pressing the [ or ] button even when Auto intensity ON is 
    selected. To enable the auto intensity adjustment again, move the cursor to the center of the 
    slide bar.
    Note
    The automatic intensity adjustment is not available when copying originals from the ADF.

    Memory Cards Supported by This Machine
    The following memory cards are compatible with this machine.
    *1 Use the special adapter provided with the card.*2 Use “SD Card Adapter” provided with the card.*3 Requires purchase of a separate compact flash card adapter for xD-Picture Card.
