„ Using the Platen Glass
1Lift the Document Cover.
2Load the original with the side to be copied, scanned, or faxed faced down on the 
Platen Glass.
z To make copies or scan documents
Place the original in landscape orientation and 
align the upper corner of it with the alignment mark 
as shown in the figure on the right.
zTo scan photographs
Place the photograph at least 0.4 inches / 10 mm 
away from and in square with the edges of the 
Platen Glass.

When setting two or more photographs at the 
same time, place them at least 0.4 inches / 10 mm 
apart from each other.
3Gently close the Document Cover.
Important
zDo not place any objects weighing more than 4.4 lb / 2.0 kg on the Platen Glass.
z Do not press or put weight on the original with pressure exceeding 4.4 lb / 2.0 kg.
Doing so may cause the scanner to malfunction or the Platen Glass to break.

„Using the ADF
1Remove any documents from the Platen Glass.
2Open the Document Tray.
3Load the document in the ADF.
Load the document with the side you want to copy, 
scan, or fax facing up in the ADF.
4Adjust the Document Guides to match the 
document width.
Note
Set a document on the Platen Glass if you want to scan it at optimum quality.
Note
Ensure that the edge of the document stack is in line 
with the Paper Size Mark (A) imprinted on the 
Document Tray.

This section describes how to load printing paper in the Rear Tray and the Front Tray.

Canon recommends that you use Canon genuine media to ensure optimal print quality.

At purchase, the machine is set to feed from the Front Tray. If you are printing without changing paper 
source settings, load paper in the Front Tray.

*4  Feeding this paper from the Front Tray can damage the machine. Load in the Rear Tray.
*5  When loading paper in stacks, the print side may be marked as it is fed in or sheets may be 
stuck to one another causing them not to be fed properly. In this case, load one sheet at a

„ Paper Sources
This machine offers two paper sources to load printing paper; the Rear Tray (A) and the Front Tray 
(B).
„Changing the Paper Source
Each time you press the  Feed Switch button, the paper source to be used switches between the 
Rear Tray and the Front Tray. The paper feeds from the paper source whose lamp is lit.

z Loading Paper in the Rear Tray
1Flatten the four corners of  the paper before loading it.
ImportantzLoad A4, Letter, or Legal-sized plain paper when receiving faxes. Legal-sized paper can only be loaded 
in the Rear Tray.
z If you cut plain paper to 4 x 6 / 101.6 x 152.4 mm, 5 x 7 / 127.0 x 177.8 mm, or 2.13 x 3.39 / 54.0 x 
86.0 mm (credit card-size) for a trial print, it can cause paper jams.
z You cannot print on postcards affixed with photos or stickers.

2Prepare to load paper.
(1) Open the Rear Tray, then pull out the Paper 
Support.
Put your finger in the rounded indent of the 
Paper Support and pull it out until it stops.
(2) Open the Paper Output Tray.
(3) Extend the Output Tray Extension.
(4) Press the  Feed Switch  button so that the  Rear 
Tr a y  lamp (A) lights.

zLoading Paper in the Front Tray
You can load A4, Letter, or B5-sized plain paper (such as Canon Super White Paper SW-201) in 
the Front Tray. You cannot load any other paper in the Front Tray.
