41 Basic Functions Playback E Viewing Still Images 1. Move the power switch to ON. 2. Slide down the power switch towards MODE and release it to set the camcorder in PLAY mode ( 12). The green PLAY indicator will turn on. 3. Move the / switch to the (Still images) position. 4. If necessary, change the media for the still images using the procedure described in the Recording Still Images section ( 36). As long as you do not change the media selection, the camcorder will show the still images recorded on the media that was selected last. 5. Use the multi selector to move ( ) between images. The following may not be displayed correctly: Images not recorded with this camcorder, images edited on or uploaded from a computer (except for the sample images for the Card Mix function), and images whose file names have been changed. When the disc/card access display (“ ” or “ ”) appears on screen and when either the DISC access or CARD access indicator is on or flashing do not perform the following actions. Doing so may result in permanent data loss. - Do not open the disc or memory card cover and do not remove the disc or memory card. - Do not disconnect the power source or turn off the camcorder. - Do not change the position of the / switch or the operating mode. Slideshow 1. Press the FUNC. button. 2. Use the multi selector to select ( ) [ SLIDESHOW] and press ( ). 3. Use the multi selector to select ( ) [START] and press ( ). 42 Index Screen 1. Move the zoom lever toward W. The stills index screen appears with the first six still images. 2. Use the multi selector to select ( , ) an image. • Move the cursor to the image you wish to view. • You can switch between index pages by pressing the + or – button. 3. Move the zoom lever toward T. The index screen closes and the selected image is displayed. Image Jump Function You can also quickly locate a specific image without having to browse all of them one by one. Push the multi selector ( ) and keep it pressed down. Image numbers will quickly run in sequence. When you release the multi selector the image corresponding to the number selected will be displayed.
43 Basic Functions Playback E Adjusting the Volume While playing a movie ( ): If you use the LCD screen for playback the camcorder will play the sound using the built-in speaker. If you close the LCD panel the sound will be muted. 1. Set the camcorder to play movies ( ). 2. Press the MENU button. 3. Use the multi selector to select ( ) the [SYSTEM SETUP] menu and press ( ). 4. Use the multi selector to select ( ) the [VOLUME] option and press ( ). 5. Adjust ( ) the volume as desired and press ( ). To turn off the volume completely, keep pressing ( ) until the volume icon changes to . 6. 44 Magnifying the Image While viewing a still image ( ), the playback image can be magnified up to 5 times. 1. Move the zoom lever toward T. • The image is magnified by 2 times and a frame appears indicating the position of the magnified area. • To further enlarge the image, move the zoom lever toward T. To reduce the magnification to less than 2 times, move the zoom lever toward W. • will appear for images that cannot be enlarged. 2. Select the part of the image to be magni fied with the multi selector. • Use the multi selector to move ( , ) the frame to the part of the image you want to see enlarged. • To cancel the magnification, move the zoom lever toward W until the frame disappears. 45 Basic Functions Playback E Selecting the Recording Data Display The camcorder keeps a data code containing the recording date and time and other camera data such as shutter speed and exposure (f-stop). You can select the data to be displayed when playing back a movie ( ) or viewing a still image ( ). 1. Press the MENU button. 2. Use the multi selector to select ( ) the [DISPLAY SETUP] menu and press ( ). 3. Use the multi selector to select ( ) the [DATA CODE] option and press ( ). 4. Use the multi selector to sele ct ( ) the data combination desired and press ( ) to select it. In mode you can only choose to display the recording date, the time or both. 5. Press the MENU button to save the setting and close the menu. 6. While playing back a movie or viewing a still image, press the DISPLAY button to turn on the data code display. AutoThe camcorder adjusts the focus, exposure and other settings automatically, allowing you to just point and shoot. PortraitThe camcorder uses a large aperture, achieving a focus on the subject while blurring other distracting details.LandscapeThe camcorder chooses a small aperture to achieve a broad depth of field in the entire composition. SportsUse this mode to record sports scenes such as tennis or golf. Slow Shutter Use this mode to record moving subjects, such as the flow of rivers with a motion blur. Night Use the Night modes to record in poorly lit places (48). Special Scene Select from 6 Special Scene modes to record with the most appropriate settings for each scene (49).
47 Advanced Features Recording Programs E Selecting the Recording Program 1. Set the camcorder to a recording mode ( or ). 2. Turn the mode dial to switch between the recording programs. The symbol of the selected recording program will appear. Do not change the recording program while recording as the brightness of the image may change abruptly. Portrait: - The blur effect of the background increases the more you zoom in ( T). - The picture may not appear smooth when played back. Landscape: Zooming out ( W) will result in a more effective picture. Sp or ts: The picture may not appear smooth when played back. Slow Shutter: - When recording movies ( ), the picture quality may not be as good as in other modes. - Autofocus may not work as well as in other modes. In such case, adjust the focus manually. 48 Using the Night and Super Night Modes The night modes allow you to record in poorly illuminated and even dark surroundings without sacrificing the color in your picture. The assist lamp will automatically light up as necessary depending on the illumination level. 1. Set the camcorder to a recording mode ( or ). 2. Turn the mode dial to and press ( ). 3. Select ( ) [ NIGHT] or [ SUPER NIGHT] and press ( ). The symbol of the selected mode appears on the screen. Moving subjects may leave a trailing afterimage. Picture quality may not be as good as in other modes. White points may appear on the screen. Autofocus may not work as well as in other modes. In such case, adjust the focus manually. 49 Advanced Features Recording Programs E Using the Special Scene Modes 1. Set the camcorder to a recording mode ( or ). 2. Turn the mode dial to and press ( ). A list of special scene (SCN) modes appears. 3. Select ( ) the desired SCN mode and press ( ). The symbol of the selected SCN mode appears. Snow/Beach: - The subject may become overexposed on cloudy days or in shaded places. Check the image on the screen. - The picture may not appear smooth when played back. Fireworks: To avoid camcorder shake, we recommend using a tripod. Make sure to use a tripod especially in , as the shutter speed slows down. Foliage Use this mode to record images with flowers, leaves or trees. Snow Use this mode to record in bright ski resorts. It prevents the subject from being underexposed. Beach Use this mode to record on a sunny beach. It prevents the subject from being underexposed. Sunset Use this mode to record sunsets in vibrant colors. Spotlight Use this mode to record spotlit scenes. Fireworks Use this mode to record fireworks.
50 Using the Program AE Mode The camcorder automatically adjusts the aperture and shutter speed according to the subject to achieve the best exposure conditions. In Program AE mode, you can point and shoot as in mode, while still enjoying the option to manually adjust some settings. Set the camcorder to a recording mode ( or ) and turn the mode dial to . If the optimal exposure cannot be obtained, try the following actions: Manually adjust the exposure ( 53). Change the metering method ( 63). Use the flash ( 57). Use the mini video light ( 56).
